Overview

This document describes the Panasonic Stereo Radio Cassette Player models RQ-SW45V and RQ-SW35V, providing instructions for operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description

The Panasonic Stereo Radio Cassette Player is a portable device designed for playing cassette tapes and receiving radio broadcasts. It features a splashproof design, making it suitable for outdoor use. The device includes a "HOLD" function to prevent accidental operation and a "LAP" function to track time during activities like jogging.

The player supports normal position type tapes for playback. For radio reception, it can tune into both FM and AM bands. The RQ-SW45V model includes a "VMSS" (Virtual Motion Sound System) feature, while the RQ-SW35V model features "XBS" (Extra Bass System), both designed to enhance low-frequency sound.

Usage Features

Battery Installation and Condition: To begin, install one R6/LR6, AA, UM-3 battery (included) by following the polarity markings. The device includes a battery condition indicator that scrolls twice before lighting up when starting a tape or radio reception. In stop mode, pressing "BATT CHECK" will make the indicator scroll twice and light for about 5 seconds. When the battery is weak, the indicator will flash. Replacing batteries within 30 seconds will retain any stored information. Rechargeable batteries manufactured by Panasonic are recommended if used.

Headphone Connection: Connect the headphones firmly to the 3.5 mm stereo jack. The headphones cord also acts as an antenna for FM radio reception, so extending it helps improve reception.

Cassette Playback:

  1. Inserting a Cassette: Open the cassette holder and insert a cassette with the forward side facing as indicated.
  2. Playing a Cassette: Press the "PLAY" button to start playback.
  3. Stopping Playback: Press the "STOP" button.
  4. Fast Forward/Rewind: Use the fast forward or rewind buttons to navigate the tape.
  5. Changing Tape Direction: Use the "DIR" (FWD→REV) button to change the tape direction.
  6. Auto Reverse: Playback will continue, looping forward and reverse sides, until the "STOP" button is pressed.
  7. Notes on Playback: Before playback, ensure the AM/FM/OFF selector is set to "OFF." When closing the cassette holder, push it firmly against the unit and turn "OPEN LOCK" until it locks. Do not open the cassette compartment cover during tape operation. Always press the "STOP" button between functions (during play, fast forward, or rewind) to avoid jamming the tape. If the tape reaches the end after fast forward or rewind, press "STOP" to release the button. If the radio is switched on during tape operation, the buttons will not be released even if the motor has stopped; press "STOP" to release them.

Radio Reception:

  1. Releasing HOLD: If the "HOLD" function is active, release it first.
  2. Selecting the Band: Use the "AM/FM/OFF MODE" selector to choose between AM, FM, or turn the radio off.
  3. Selecting a Station: Use the "TUNING" controls to select a station.
  4. FM Reception: For clear FM reception, set "FM RECEPTION" to "NORMAL." If reception is impaired or there's interference from a powerful station, set it to "CITY."
  5. Preset Tuning: The device can store a total of 20 stations (FM 1-5, AM 1-5 for MODE 1 and MODE 2).
    • Mode Selection: Press and hold "MODE" for more than 2 seconds to select "0" (MODE 1) or "2" (MODE 2).
    • Memory Presetting: Tune in the desired station, then press and hold one of the memory buttons (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) for about 2 seconds. Three beeps will confirm storage.
    • Recalling a Preset Station: Press a memory button (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) and release within 2 seconds.
  6. Adjusting Allocation Settings (Overseas Use): Allocations need to be changed according to the area. The setting changes as follows: FM 0.2 MHz, AM 10 kHz (original setting) → FM 0.1 MHz, AM 10 kHz → FM 0.05 MHz, AM 9 kHz. To adjust, press and hold "MODE" to select the mode, then while pressing "BATT CHECK," press and hold "MODE" for about 3 seconds. The changed allocation settings (FM and then AM) will be displayed. Note that converting the allocation erases previously stored stations.

Volume Adjustment: Use the volume controls to adjust the sound level.

Bass Enhancement (VMSS/XBS):

  • VMSS (RQ-SW45V): Boosts the low frequency range, making the sound more vigorous. Raising the volume intensifies the effect. The brain graphics are displayed when VMSS is on, scrolling to indicate the strength of the effect. If distortion or discomfort occurs, reduce volume or turn VMSS mode off.
  • XBS (RQ-SW35V): Boosts the low frequency range. If distortion occurs, turn down the volume.
  • Note: VMSS/XBS does not function for AM reception. If activated during AM reception, "E." will be displayed.

LAP Function: The LAP function tracks time during activities.

  1. Activating LAP: Press "LAP." The display will show "00:00" or the last condition.
  2. Choosing LAP Mode: Within 10 seconds, press one of the "LAP START" buttons (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) to choose a mode. A tone sounds at the set time for each mode (e.g., every minute, every 5 minutes). "Beep beep" sounds every 30 minutes, and "beep bee...p" every 60 minutes.
  3. Pausing LAP: Press "LAP." The selected mode number flashes, and the display clears after about 10 seconds.
  4. Restarting LAP: If the display has cleared, press "LAP." To continue in the same mode, press the "LAP START" button corresponding to the flashing mode number. To change modes, press the desired "LAP START" button.
  5. Resetting LAP: If the display has cleared, press and hold "LAP." The display changes back to "00:00."
  6. Notes: The LAP function may not operate if the battery is low. Graphics scroll on the display when LAP is on (RQ-SW35V only). When LAP is on standby, pressing any "LAP START" button starts it, pressing "LAP" turns the function off, and LAP automatically switches off after about 10 seconds if left on standby.

Hold Function: This function prevents accidental operation by disabling front panel buttons. The display will show "HOLD" when active.

Listening Caution: Avoid playing headphones at high volume for extended periods. Reduce volume or discontinue use if ringing in ears occurs. Do not use while operating a motorized vehicle. Use caution in hazardous situations. Even with open-air headphones, do not turn up the volume so high that you cannot hear surrounding sounds. Set a safe listening level by starting at a low setting, slowly increasing until comfortable and clear, then leaving the dial there.

Maintenance Features

General Care:

  • Battery Removal: Remove the battery if the unit will not be used for a long period to prevent leakage and damage.
  • Heat and Sunlight: Avoid using or placing the unit near heat sources or leaving it in an automobile exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods with doors and windows closed.
  • Water Resistance: This unit is splashproof but not designed for submersion. Do not immerse it in water or splash excessive amounts of water onto it. If the unit or headphones get wet, dry them with a soft cloth. Do not open the cassette holder near water or sand. Ensure no sand or dust is around the cassette holder.
  • Salt Water: Do not expose the unit or headphones to salt water.
  • Headphone Jack: Since water in the headphone jack can cause damage, cover it with the attached rubber cap when headphones are not in use.
  • Temperature/Humidity: Do not leave the unit or headphones for long periods in high temperature and high humidity areas (e.g., bathrooms, damp basements).
  • Cassette Compartment: To prevent water from entering, ensure "OPEN LOCK" is turned until the cassette holder is closed.
  • Product Damage: Do not expose the product to rain, water, or other liquids.

Cleaning: To ensure good sound quality, clean the head after approximately every 10 hours of use with a cotton swab dampened with a little alcohol.
