Overview

The Petzl ZIGZAG, ZIGZAG PLUS, and CHICANE are rope progression devices designed for tree care, facilitating both ascent and descent on ropes. These devices are intended for use by trained professionals in inherently dangerous activities, emphasizing the user's responsibility for their actions and decisions.

Function Description

The ZIGZAG and ZIGZAG PLUS are mechanical Prusik devices that allow for efficient movement on a rope. Their design enables smooth ascent, controlled descent, and effective jamming to hold position. The CHICANE is an auxiliary friction device that can be added to the ZIGZAG or ZIGZAG PLUS to enhance friction on single ropes, particularly for lighter users or when additional friction is desired.

For ascent, the devices allow the user to move up the rope by manipulating the rope and the device. When ascending on a doubled rope, the ZIGZAG or ZIGZAG PLUS is used in conjunction with a foot loop and a chest ascender. For single rope ascent, the CHICANE is integrated to provide the necessary friction.

During descent, the ZIGZAG and ZIGZAG PLUS offer controlled rope glide. The user can regulate the speed of descent by controlling the grip on the free end of the rope. To stop or jam the device, the user releases the control on the rope, allowing the device to automatically lock onto the rope.

The CHICANE, when used with the ZIGZAG or ZIGZAG PLUS on a single rope, increases friction, which can be particularly beneficial for lighter users or when more braking power is needed. It helps to maintain a consistent and controlled descent.

Usage Features

The ZIGZAG, ZIGZAG PLUS, and CHICANE are designed for versatility in various tree care scenarios:

  • Rope Installation: The devices can be installed on both doubled and single ropes. For doubled rope setups, the ZIGZAG or ZIGZAG PLUS is directly attached to the harness. For single rope setups, the CHICANE is integrated with the ZIGZAG or ZIGZAG PLUS, providing additional friction.
  • Controlling Rope Glide: Users can control the rope glide during descent by holding the free end of the rope. Releasing the rope allows the device to automatically jam, securing the user's position.
  • Movement within the Tree: The devices facilitate movement away from the trunk and returning to the trunk, allowing arborists to navigate the tree canopy efficiently. This includes both horizontal and vertical movements.
  • Ascent on Doubled and Single Ropes: The devices support both doubled rope and single rope ascent techniques. For single rope ascent, the CHICANE is crucial for optimizing friction.
  • Positioning at the Work Station: The devices enable precise positioning at the work station, allowing the user to maintain a stable and secure position while working.
  • Changing the Rope: The design allows for easy and secure changing of the rope, ensuring continuity and safety during operations.
  • Auxiliary Attachment Hole: The devices feature an auxiliary attachment hole that can be used for various purposes, such as connecting a lanyard or other equipment, enhancing the versatility of the system.
  • Compatibility: The devices are compatible with EN 1891 type A ropes, specifically with diameters of 11.5 mm to 13 mm. The CHICANE is designed for use with ZIGZAG or ZIGZAG PLUS and ropes between 11.5 mm and 13 mm, with a minimum rope length of 11 cm between the device and the anchor.
  • KNEE ASCENT System: The devices are compatible with the KNEE ASCENT system, which further aids in efficient rope ascent.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the ZIGZAG, ZIGZAG PLUS, and CHICANE.

  • Inspection: Regular inspection of the device is mandatory. Before and after each use, users must check for any deformation, cracks, cuts, wear, corrosion, or damage to the rivets, springs, and friction pins. The condition of the rope channel and the attachment holes should also be checked. Any signs of damage or excessive wear require the device to be retired.
  • Cleaning: The device should be cleaned with fresh water and a mild soap solution if necessary. After cleaning, it must be thoroughly rinsed to remove any soap residue.
  • Drying: After cleaning, the device should be air-dried in a well-ventilated area, away from direct heat or sunlight. The maximum drying temperature should not exceed +30°C (+86°F).
  • Storage: Store the device in a cool, dry, dark place, away from chemicals, extreme temperatures, and sharp objects.
  • Transport: When transporting, protect the device from damage, moisture, and contamination.
  • Modifications and Repairs: Any modifications or repairs to the device are strictly prohibited. Only Petzl-authorized repairs are allowed.
  • Traceability: Each device has a unique serial number, manufacturing date, and other markings for traceability. This information is essential for tracking the device's history and for any warranty or recall purposes.
  • Friction Pins for CHICANE: The friction pins on the CHICANE are replaceable. When replacing them, a torque wrench must be used to ensure they are tightened to 3 Nm. This ensures optimal friction and safe operation.
  • PPE Checking: Petzl provides resources for PPE checking, including technical tips and a dedicated website (PETZL.COM) for verifying the status and authenticity of personal protective equipment.

The ZIGZAG, ZIGZAG PLUS, and CHICANE are designed to be durable and reliable, but their performance and safety depend on proper use, regular inspection, and adherence to all maintenance guidelines.
