Monitoring NBP
The EarlyVue VS30 monitor measures Systolic, Diastolic, and Mean Arterial Pressure
(MAP) in adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients by acquiring pressure pulses through a
series of controlled deflation steps of an inflated cuff. NBP measurements are based on
the Philips picoNIBP algorithm.
The VS30 monitor provides two types of NBP measurements:
• Spot Check — One NBP measurement starts each time you touch an NBP button in
the NBP numeric pane or the NBP menu.
• Interval — The monitor automatically takes a series of NBP measurements at a
specified interval. Interval NBP is available when you use the Interval or Continuous
monitoring mode. You can select an interval period, create an interval program, or
start a STAT measurement. For more information about Interval and Continuous
monitoring modes, see “Monitoring Mode Menu” on page 2-18.
In addition, a pulse rate can be derived from the NBP measurement and displayed in the
Pulse numeric pane. For details, see Chapter 10, “Monitoring Pulse Rate.”
NBP Measurement Guidelines
NBP accuracy can be affected by the NBP measurement site, the position of the patient
(standing or lying down), and the patient’s overall physiological condition.
To obtain the most accurate NBP values, use the following guidelines when taking NBP
measurements:
• The patient should be sitting comfortably, with legs uncrossed, feet flat on the floor,
and back and arm supported.
• The patient should be relaxed and not talking during the measurement procedure.
• Wait five minutes before taking the first NBP measurement.
• Position the NBP cuff so that the middle of the cuff is at the level of the right atrium
of the heart.
• Use the correct NBP cuff size.
