Signal Meaning/solution
E5 appears on the
display.
The kettle is out of order. Contact an
authorised Philips service centre or the
Consumer Care Centre in your country.
The kettle beeps. The water has reached the set temperature.
Problem Possible solution
I cannot set
the desired
temperature.
The current temperature of the water in the kettle
is probably higher than the temperature you want to
set. You can add cold water to the kettle. If you wish
to reheat the water immediately, you can only select
100ºC.
I try to switch
on the kettle but
it switches off
automatically.
When there is no water in the kettle, the boil-
dry protection trips and the kettle switches off
automatically. You may need to put more water in
the kettle (at least 0.25 litres).
The kettle is not placed on its base correctly.
Remove the kettle from the base and correctly place
it on the base again.
The kettle
switches off
automatically
when the keep-
warm function is
active.
The kettle keeps the water warm for 30 minutes and
then switches off automatically. To keep the water
warm longer, press the KEEP WARM button again
after it has nished.

- Once every month for areas with high water hardness.
1 Fill the kettle with white vinegar (8% acetic acid) up to one quarter of
the MAX indication.
2 Add water to the MAX indication.
3 Press the green tea button to heat up the water to 80ºC and then
press the KEEP WARM button.
4 Empty the kettle after 30 minutes and rinse the inside thoroughly.
5 Repeat the descaling procedure if there is still some scale in the
kettle.
Note: You can also use an appropriate descaler. In that case, follow the
instructions on the package of the descaler.
Descaling the kettle (HD9386/HD9388)
If the kettle needs to be descaled, the calc light lights up on the display of
the base.
1 Fill the kettle with white vinegar (8% acetic acid) up to one quarter of
the MAX indication.
2 Add water to the MAX indication.
3 To start the descaling process, press the black tea button and the
personal setting button at the same time (Fig. 20).
, The kettle heats up the water to 80ºC.
, During the descaling process, the calc light slowly pulsates until the
descalingprocesshasnished.
, The display counts down the time of the descaling process (30
minutes) in steps of 5 minutes. The time on the display slowly pulsates.
, Whenthedescalingprocessisnished,youhearanaudiblesignaland
the appliance switches off automatically.
4 Follow steps 4 and 5 in section ‘Descaling the kettle (HD9380/
HD9384)’ above.
Note: If you take the kettle off the base before the descaling process is nished,
the appliance switches off automatically. You can also deactivate the descaling
process by pressing any of the preset buttons.
Note: If you do not descale the kettle, the calc light lights up the next 5 times
you use the kettle.
Storage
- To store the cord, wind it around the cord storage facility in the bottom
of the base (Fig. 2).
