Overview

The Philips IronCare water descale filter (model GC024) is a household appliance designed to extend the lifetime of steam irons and steam generators by minimizing the effect of scale. It achieves this by filtering tap water, reducing mineral content that can lead to scale buildup in ironing appliances.

Function Description

The IronCare water descale filter operates on a simple filtration principle. It consists of a water jug (5), a filtration reservoir (4), and an anti-calc cartridge (3). Water is poured into the filtration reservoir through a water filling opening (2) located in the lid (1). As the water passes through the anti-calc cartridge, it undergoes a descaling process. The treated water then collects in the water jug, ready for use in a steam iron or steam generator. The spout (6) allows for easy pouring of the treated water. The anti-calc cartridge contains materials that change color from blue to brown as they absorb minerals, indicating when replacement is necessary.

Usage Features

Using the IronCare water descale filter is straightforward. To begin, the user fills the filtration reservoir with normal tap water through the designated opening in the lid. The water then flows downwards, passing through the anti-calc cartridge and into the water jug below. This process ensures that the water is descaled before it reaches the iron. The user can start pouring the treated water into their iron even if there is still water in the filtration reservoir, offering convenience during use. After an ironing session, any remaining treated water in the water jug should be poured out. Untreated water will not come out of the spout during this process.

For optimal filtration, it is recommended to use tap water at a temperature between 5°C and 35°C. The device is intended for household use only, and the filtered water is specifically for steam irons or steam generators; it is not suitable for drinking or preparing food or beverages. Users should never put perfume, vinegar, starch, descaling agents, ironing aids, organic solvents, or other chemicals into the water descale filter, as these can damage the device and affect its effectiveness.

The IronCare water descale filter is designed for safe use. It can be used by children aged 8 or above and by persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, provided they have received instructions on safe use and are aware of the associated hazards. However, children should not be allowed to play with the device, and the filter and cartridge should be kept out of reach of children aged 8 or under.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance, primarily replacing the anti-calc cartridge, is crucial for the continued effectiveness of the IronCare water descale filter. The anti-calc cartridge contains two types of materials, initially blue and brown. The blue material gradually changes to brown as the cartridge is used and absorbs scale-forming minerals. Once the anti-calc cartridge has turned completely brown, it indicates that its effective life has ended, and it needs to be replaced with a new original Philips GC025 anti-calc cartridge. The lifespan of the cartridge depends on the water hardness in the user's area.

To replace the cartridge, the user first removes the lid of the water jug. Then, using the cartridge handle, the used anti-calc cartridge is lifted out of the filtration reservoir. The old cartridge can be disposed of with normal household waste. A new anti-calc cartridge is then placed into the filtration reservoir, ensuring it is properly locked in. Finally, the lid is placed back onto the water jug. It is important not to clean the anti-calc cartridge in any way.

All parts of the IronCare water descale filter, except for the anti-calc cartridge, are dishwasher-proof, making cleaning convenient. The anti-calc cartridge should be removed before placing the other parts in the dishwasher.

For storage, it is strongly advised to keep the IronCare water descale filter and its anti-calc cartridge in a dark place at a temperature between 5°C and 35°C to ensure optimal effectiveness. After use, the jug should be emptied. Storing the device with the anti-calc cartridge in its original packaging or in a closed cabinet can help prolong the life of the cartridge. The anti-calc cartridge should not be exposed to direct sunlight or artificial light, nor to temperatures below 0°C or above 50°C.

If the water takes longer than the usual 3-4 minutes to filter 750ml, the user should refresh the water and try again. If the problem persists, contacting a Philips service center is recommended. The presence of water droplets coming from the holes on top of the cartridge is normal and designed to reduce filtration time, not affecting water quality.

The device comes with a two-year guarantee covering defects due to faulty materials and workmanship. However, the guarantee does not cover products or parts subject to wear, such as anti-calc cartridges, nor does it cover damage from improper use, poor maintenance, or unauthorized alterations or repairs.
