Overview

The Pinell Supersound 001 is a versatile portable radio designed for a comprehensive audio experience, offering DAB/DAB+, FM, and Bluetooth connectivity. Its primary function is to provide access to a wide range of radio broadcasts and allow for wireless music streaming from smart devices.

Function Description:

The device operates across three main modes: DAB radio, FM radio, and Bluetooth.

  • DAB/DAB+ Mode: This mode allows users to listen to digital radio broadcasts, providing a wide selection of channels with digital sound quality, broadcast free-to-air. The display shows information about the station, stream, and track currently playing. Key functionalities include:

    • Station List: View available DAB stations.
    • Full Scan: Automatically scan for and list all available DAB stations. This is particularly useful for initial setup or when moving to a new location to ensure optimal reception. If no stations are found, the device will indicate "No DAB station" or "Service not available," prompting the user to extend the antenna or perform another scan.
    • Manual Tune: Manually tune to specific DAB channels or frequencies. This feature is helpful for fine-tuning reception or adding stations that might have been missed during an automatic scan. The display provides a live indication of the received signal strength.
    • Prune Invalid: Remove unavailable stations from the station list, keeping the list clean and relevant.
    • DRC (Dynamic Range Compression): Adjusts the dynamic range of the audio, making quiet sounds comparatively louder and loud sounds comparatively quieter. This feature, when enabled by the broadcaster, helps in environments where consistent volume levels are preferred. Options include High, Low, or Off.
  • FM Radio Mode: This mode provides access to analogue radio broadcasts from the FM band, often displaying RDS (Radio Data System) information about the station.

    • Selecting Stations: Users can find stations by pressing and holding the navigation buttons, which initiates a scan across the FM band.
    • Scan Setting: Configure the FM scan to stop at stations with either strong signals only or all available stations, offering flexibility based on signal quality preferences.
    • Audio Settings: By default, stereo stations are reproduced in stereo. However, for weak stations where audio quality might be poor, users can opt for "Forced Mono" to improve clarity, or revert to "Stereo Allowed" for better signal conditions.
  • Bluetooth Mode: This mode enables wireless streaming of music from a smart device.

    • Pairing: To use Bluetooth, users must first pair their device with the Pinell Supersound 001. The radio will appear as "PINELL 001" on the smart device's Bluetooth list. It supports Bluetooth 4.2.
    • Music Playback: Once paired, music files can be played wirelessly, with volume adjustable on the smart device. The device retains pairing information, so re-pairing is generally not required unless issues arise.

Usage Features:

The Pinell Supersound 001 is designed for ease of use with intuitive controls and a clear display.

  • Main Controls:

    • VOLUME Knob: A short press powers the device on, while a long press powers it off or sets it to standby. It also serves to turn off an alarm with a short press and adjusts the volume by turning. In menu navigation, it confirms selections.
    • PRESET Buttons (1, 2, 3+): Long-pressing these buttons saves favorite stations (up to 20 DAB and 20 FM presets). A short press recalls saved stations. For "3+", users can navigate through additional preset numbers using the previous/next buttons.
    • INFO Button: Displays more information about the currently playing station, cycling through available data with repeated presses.
    • SOURCE Button: Cycles through the available input sources: DAB, FM, and Bluetooth.
    • Previous/Next Buttons (◄ / ►►): Used to select previous or next stations/options in various modes.
    • MENU Button: Accesses the menu for the current operating mode. Pressing it again returns to the now playing screen.
    • Play/Pause Button (►॥): Functions as a play/pause control specifically in Bluetooth mode.
    • BACK Button: Returns to the previous screen in the menu hierarchy.
  • System Settings: The device includes a comprehensive system menu to customize various aspects of its operation:

    • Sleep Timer: Allows users to set a period (15, 30, 45, 60, 90 minutes) after which the radio will enter standby mode, ideal for falling asleep to music.
    • Alarm and Snooze: Features dual alarms that can be configured with different sources (Buzzer, DAB, or FM), presets, frequencies (Once, Daily, Weekends, Weekdays), time/date, duration (15-120 seconds), and volume. The snooze function (5, 10, 15, 30 minutes) is activated by a short press of the VOLUME knob, while a long press cancels the alarm. Note that alarm and snooze functions require USB power.
    • Equaliser: Provides sound equalization profiles (Normal, Classic, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Speech) and a "My EQ" option for custom adjustments of treble, bass, and loudness.
    • Time/Date: Automatically updates the time if a DAB+ signal is present. Users can manually set the time/date, choose auto-update options (Any, DAB, FM, No update), and select between 12-hour or 24-hour formats.
    • Backlight: Adjusts the display brightness. Options include "On" (always bright), "Timeout" (brightness dims after 60, 300, or 600 seconds to a "Dim level"), and adjustable "On level" (High, Medium, Low) and "Dim level" (Low).
    • Language: Change the menu language.
    • Factory Reset: Resets all user-defined settings, including time/date, preferences, station lists, and presets, to their original default values.

Maintenance Features:

While the manual primarily focuses on operational aspects, it includes general safety and care instructions that contribute to the device's maintenance and longevity.

  • Cleaning: The device should be cleaned only with a dry cloth.
  • Power Disconnection: Unplug the product from the wall outlet before cleaning.
  • Placement: Place the unit on a solid surface. Avoid placing it in closed bookcases or cabinets that obstruct ventilation openings to prevent overheating.
  • Environmental Protection: Do not expose the apparatus to rain or moisture, or to dripping or splashing liquids. No naked flame sources, such as lighted candles, should be placed on the apparatus. Avoid using the product near water or moisture.
  • Heat Sources: Do not install near any heat sources like radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other heat-producing appliances.
  • Power Cord Protection: Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched, especially at plugs and where it exits the product.
  • Internal Access: Do not attempt to service the product yourself. Opening or removing covers may expose users to dangerous voltages or other hazards. Servicing should be referred to qualified personnel or an authorized service center.
  • Overloading: To prevent fire or electric shock, avoid overloading wall outlets, extension cords, or integral convenience receptacles.
  • Foreign Objects: Do not let objects or liquids enter the product.
  • Power Source: Use proper power sources as described in the operating instructions or marked on the product. The direct plug-in adapter serves as a disconnect device and should remain readily operable.
  • Software Version: The system menu allows users to check the current software version, which can be useful for troubleshooting or future updates (though software update functionality is noted as "not in use" in this manual).
