The TUN-38Ex Heat Detector is designed for the detection of fire hazards or the appearance of fire in closed rooms. It is particularly suited for environments where a temperature rise may be observed during the initial phase of a fire, or where the temperature may exceed a set fire danger level for various reasons. This detector is intended for use with fire detecting lines connected to control panels manufactured by POLON-ALFA or other producers that have obtained POLON-ALFA's compatibility confirmation.
The TUN-38Ex heat detectors are connected to fire detecting lines through an intrinsically safe barrier or separator with specific parameters: Uo ≤ 25 V, Io ≤ 99 mA. These detectors are installed in rooms and zones classified as 1st and 2nd explosive hazard categories, which result from potential explosion dangers of explosive gases or inflammable liquid vapors. These hazards are ranked at IIA, IIB, and IIC explosiveness subgroups and T1 up to T6 temperature classes.
The detector's operational temperature range is between -25 °C and +50 °C for A1 class and +65 °C for B class. The allowable ambient temperature range is -25 °C up to +65 °C for T6 temperature class, and -25 °C up to +85 °C for T1...T5 temperature classes.
The TUN-38Ex Heat Detector complies with several European Union Directives:
It has received an EC-Certificate of Conformity No. 1438/CPD/0025 from the Fire Protection Science and Research Centre (CNBOP) Józefów, Poland, a EU notified authority No. 1438, confirming its compliance with the PN-EN 54-5:2003 standard. Additionally, the Central Mining Institute, Katowice, Poland, a EU notified authority No. 1453, has issued:
The TUN-38Ex heat detector reacts to a rise in temperature during the initial phase of a fire. It operates as a fixed temperature detector when its set-off operation threshold is exceeded, according to its given class. It also functions as a rate-of-rise heat detector, transmitting a warning signal to the master control panel if a rapid temperature rise exceeds the determined level for its class. A warning signal may also be triggered by thermistor damage or malfunction.
The detector includes a signalling LED diode that illuminates in alarm mode, facilitating quick localization of the activated detector and aiding in periodic inspections. For detectors installed in hard-to-reach areas, an additional optical alarm signal can be obtained by connecting a WZ-31 alarm in an accessible and visible location.
The detector's casing is made of black plastic with low surface resistance to remove electrostatic charge. The thermistor is protected by a specially shaped cover that ensures proper directional characteristics. Connections for detecting line cables and cramps for setting the activation class are located under the cover. The electronic circuit is inundated to protect it from adverse operational environments, ensuring proper operation in explosive atmospheres.
Before installation, determine the detector class using the cramps accessible after removing the cover. The cramp positions corresponding to various classes (A1R-L, A1S, BS, BR, A1R-H) are illustrated in Figure 2 of the manual. Detectors must be connected to detecting lines according to Figure 3. It is mandatory to use an intrinsically safe barrier or separator in intrinsically safe detecting lines. After installation, all detectors must be individually checked. It is not recommended to warm up more than one detector in a single detecting line simultaneously, as warming up more than three detectors at once may transmit a false damage (short circuit) signal. After a fire alarm, the warm-up process should be terminated, and the alarm cancelled via the control panel or by briefly interrupting the detector's supply circuit.
Periodic detector operation checks are recommended, including:
The TUN-38Ex detector requires periodic controls, carried out at least once every 6 months, to ensure proper operation and compatibility with the fire control panel. Any damaged detector must be sent to the manufacturer for repair. During renovation or painting works, detectors should be protected from damage or dirt.
All maintenance and periodic inspection tasks must be performed by skilled personnel authorized and trained by POLON-ALFA. Repairs must be carried out by the manufacturer; POLON-ALFA disclaims responsibility for apparatus repaired by unauthorized personnel. When working at height, particular care must be taken, using tools and machinery in good working condition. Protective anti-dusting glasses and masks are obligatory during installation works that produce high amounts of dust, such as drilling holes in ceilings.
TUN-38Ex detectors must be stored in individual packages in closed rooms at temperatures between +5 °C and +35 °C, with relative humidity up to 80%. The surrounding environment must be free of volatile compounds of sulphur, acid, or alkaline exhausts. Detectors should be stored at a minimum distance of 1.5 m from heating elements. For transportation, the detectors can be carried by any means, provided transport instructions on their packing are observed, and they are protected from mechanical damage. It is forbidden to transport the goods at temperatures lower than -40 °C and higher than +70 °C (at relative humidity up to 80%) or at relative humidity higher than 95% at +40 °C.
