This document is an owner's manual and operations guide for the PowerKing Chipper Shredder, specifically covering models PK0915 (5" 14HP) and PK0903 (4" 9.5HP).
Function Description:
The PowerKing Chipper Shredder is a high-powered machine designed for chipping and shredding organic materials such as leaves, branches, crop stray, and farming feed. It utilizes a drum housing with chipping blades and a bar blade to process material. The machine is intended for outdoor use only, away from flammable materials.

Usage Features:
Before operation, users must read the Safety & Operating Instructions manual and become familiar with the machine. Key safety instructions include:
- General Safety: Use only original equipment and spare parts. Operate the machine on a flat, dry surface outdoors, away from flammable materials.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Users must wear close-fitting work clothes, work gloves (properly fitting, no loose cuffs/drawstrings), eye protectors (goggles/safety glasses with side shields), ear plugs, a dust-proof mask, and steel-toed boots with non-slip treads. Avoid loose clothing or jewelry. Do not operate barefoot or with open-toed sandals. Long pants/jeans are recommended.
- Bystander Safety: Keep bystanders and pets at least 50 feet away from the work area. Stop the engine if anyone approaches. Never allow children to operate the chipper.
- Engine Safety (Gas Powered):
- Never run the engine in an enclosed area due to carbon monoxide risk.
- Store fuel and oil in approved containers, away from heat and open flame, out of reach of children.
- Fill the gasoline tank outdoors with the engine off and cool. Do not handle gasoline while smoking or near ignition sources. Securely reinstall caps.
- If gasoline spills, do not start the engine; move the machine away from the spill and avoid ignition sources until vapors dissipate.
- Allow the engine to cool completely before storage. Do not store a machine with gas in the tank near open flames or sparks.
- Never make adjustments or repairs with the engine running. Shut down, disconnect the spark plug wire, and wait 5 minutes before working.
- Do not tamper with the engine's governor setting.
- Keep combustible substances away from a hot engine.
- Do not cover the machine while the muffler is hot.
- Do not operate with the air cleaner or carburetor air intake cover removed.
- Operation Procedure:
- Ensure the chipper is on a flat, dry surface.
- Adjust the exit chute to the desired location for processed material.
- Refer to the Kohler manual for engine starting instructions.
- Adjust the throttle to maximum RPM.
- Stand to the side of the entry chute to avoid kickback.
- Load material from the large diameter side.
- Once the machine auto-feeds, release the branch.
- Allow material to process completely before adding more.
- If auto-feed does not occur, slowly load branches or use other branches to guide them.
- Jam Clearing: Stop the machine, remove both entry and exit chutes. Remove the cap on the bearing and turn the shaft using the included wrench (or a larger adjustable wrench) in both directions to loosen jammed material.
- Assembly: The manual provides a detailed assembly procedure with a parts diagram. Key steps include attaching wheels to the axle stand, securing the axle stand to the drum housing, installing the tow bar joint and support leg, and attaching the tow bar. The entry and exit chutes, along with the adjustable diverter, are then attached using wing nuts or hex nuts.
Maintenance Features:
Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and longevity.
- Pre-Maintenance Safety: Before any maintenance or inspection, stop the motor, unplug the power cord, wait 5 minutes for parts to cool, and disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental startup.
- Engine Oil: The unit does not have a GEAR REDUCTION SYSTEM and does not require oil for it. The engine does not come with oil. 10W-30 Motor Oil is recommended, and the engine holds 1.2 quarts. Both yellow oil fill holes lead to the same reservoir.
- Bolt Tightness: Ensure all bolts are snug before running.
- Maintenance Checklist:
- Before each use: Check engine oil level, general equipment, grease bearings, check belts, clean engine exterior and cooling.
- Every 5 hours: Clean engine exterior and cooling.
- Every 25 hours: Change engine oil (first time after 5 hours), replace air filter.
- Every 100 hours: Replace spark plug.
- Engine Service: Refer to the engine manufacturer's user manual for specific engine maintenance.
- Lubrication: Apply 1 pump of lithium grease in each flange bearing before each use.
- Blades:
- Check blades for cracks, dullness, or chips. Replace cracked blades immediately.
- Dull or chipped blades can be reversed.
- Blades are removed using the included T-bar wrench or a 17mm socket with extension and ratchet driver. Use a 2x4 or soft material in the drum to prevent movement and avoid stripping bolts. Use rags or paper towels in the entry to prevent bolts or blades from falling into the drum.
- Bar Blade Adjustment: The bar blade is located at the bottom of the drum housing. If chipping performance is poor, adjust the bar blade by loosening the bolts underneath, setting a 1-5mm gap to the chipping blades, ensuring it is parallel, and then retightening.
- Wing Nuts: Wing nuts are provided for easy access to the drum housing (entry and exit chute). They should be checked frequently for looseness.
Troubleshooting:
The manual includes a troubleshooting guide for common issues:
- Engine won't start: Check ignition switch, fuel shut-off valve, fresh/clean gas, spark plug condition.
- Engine lacks power/runs unsmoothly: Check throttle lever position, air filter cleanliness, spark plug condition, fresh/clean unleaded gas, correct oil level/cleanliness.
- Engine smokes: Check oil level, air filter, correct oil type for temperature, clean cooling fins.
- Engine stops while chipping: Check for overloading, blocked chutes, emergency stop button, and protection switch.
- Drum is jammed: Stop machine, remove chutes, turn shaft to clear material.
- Poor chipping performance: Check the gap between the bar blade and chipping blades (recommend 1-5mm clearance).
