The Cyclone Dust Collection System turns a shop vacuum into a
2-stage cyclone separator. The Cyclone Dust Collection System
causes a vortex action inside the bucket to collect debris before it
enters the vacuum, this helps prevent the loss of suction power.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Always follow basic safety precautions including the following.
WARNING
For your own safety, read, understand and follow the owner’s
manual and all labels on the tools and dust collector/vacuum
before using any tool or equipment.
WARNING
Some dust created by operation of power tool contains chemicals
known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects
or other reproductive harm. To reduce your exposure to these
chemicals, work in a well ventilated area and work with approved
safety equipment. Always wear OSHA/NIOSH approved, properly
fitting face mask or respirator when using such tools. .
WARNING
Do not attempt to operate tool until it is completely assembled
according to the instructions.
WARNING
Metal shavings or dust can set sawdust on fire. Collect wood
materials only. Do not collect metal shavings or dust with anything
that has metal in it. Disconnect dust collector system from any tool
before working on metals. Remove all traces of wood dust from
inside that tool’s dust traps. Remove all traces of metal shavings
or dust before reconnecting the vacuum/dust collector.
IMPORTANT: To prevent static build-up, make sure the hose
is grounding. Always ensure the dust collection network is
properly grounded. If in doubt, contact an electrician.

Overview

The POWERTEC Cyclone Dust Collection System, Model No. 70293, is a two-stage cyclone separator designed to enhance the performance of a shop vacuum by pre-collecting debris. This system works by creating a vortex action inside a 6-gallon plastic bucket, which captures dust and debris before it reaches the shop vacuum, thereby preventing loss of suction power.

Function Description:

The core function of the system is to act as an intermediary between a woodworking tool (or other dust-producing equipment) and a shop vacuum or dust collector. It diverts larger particles and most of the dust into its collection bucket, leaving only finer dust to be filtered by the connected vacuum. This significantly extends the life of vacuum filters, maintains consistent suction, and reduces the frequency of emptying the vacuum's main collection tank. The two-stage cyclone separator lid is central to this process, creating the necessary cyclonic action to separate particles by centrifugal force.

Important Technical Specifications:

The system includes a 6-gallon plastic bucket, which serves as the primary collection vessel, equipped with four assembled casters for mobility. The cyclone separator lid is a 12-inch two-stage design. For connectivity, the system provides two 2-1/2" ID polypropylene hoses that are collapsible and expandable from 10" to 38-3/4". Various reducers and couplers are included to ensure compatibility with different port sizes:

  • 2-1/2" Elbow: For connecting to one of the lid's ports.
  • Nominal 2-1/4" to 1-1/2" Reducer: For adapting to smaller tool ports.
  • Nominal 4" to 2-1/4" Reducer: For connecting to larger dust collector hoses.
  • Nominal 2-1/4" to 2-1/2" Quick Coupler: Three units are provided, featuring left-hand screw threads for secure hose attachment.
  • Hose Clamps: A 4-1/4" hose clamp and a 2-3/4" hose clamp are included for securing connections.

Usage Features:

The Cyclone Dust Collection System offers versatile connectivity options, allowing it to be integrated into various workshop setups:

  • Shop Vacuum Connection (2-1/4" ID port): A quick connect coupler threads onto one of the 2-1/2" ID polypropylene hoses. The hose end must be extended to thread into the coupler's left-handed threads. This coupler then connects to the dust port on the lid (without the elbow). A second quick connect coupler threads into the other end of the polypropylene hose, connecting its 2-1/4" OD end to the shop vacuum port.
  • Dust Collector Connection: The 4" to 2-1/2" reducer connects to a dust collector hose using the 4-1/4" hose clamp. This reducer then attaches to the dust port on the lid (without the elbow).
  • Direct Tool Connection (2-1/2" OD port): One end of a 2-1/2" ID polypropylene hose can connect directly to a 2-1/2" OD machine port and be secured with the 2-3/4" hose clamp. A quick change coupler connects the other end of the hose directly to the Cyclone dust port.
  • Tool Connection (2-1/4" ID tool port): One end of a 2-1/2" ID polypropylene hose connects directly to the Cyclone dust port and is secured with the 2-3/4" hose clamp. A quick change coupler connects the other end of the hose directly to the 2-1/4" ID machine port.
  • Small Tool Dust Port Connection: The 2-1/4" end of the 2-1/4" to 1-1/2" adapter connects directly to the Cyclone dust port. The 1-1/2" OD end then connects to a 1-1/2" ID small hose kit (e.g., Powertec 70175).
  • Direct Hose Connection: The 2-1/2" ID polypropylene hose can also be connected directly to either port of the Cyclone Dust Collection System using the 2-3/4" hose clamp.

The system is designed for mobility, featuring casters that allow for easy movement around the workshop. These casters are adjustable to match the work surface height. To adjust, loosen the M12 nut on the bottom of the bucket, move the nut up or down to the desired height, hold the M12 nut on the inside of the bucket, and tighten the M12 nut on the bottom. This process is repeated for all casters.

Maintenance Features:

  • Bucket Emptying: For maximum performance, the bucket should be emptied when the debris reaches the "FULL LINE" indicated on the bucket.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes critical safety guidelines. Users must read, understand, and follow the owner's manual and all labels on tools and the dust collector/vacuum. It warns against collecting metal shavings or dust with anything that has metal in it, as this can cause sawdust fires. The system should be disconnected from any tool before working on metals, and all traces of wood dust or metal shavings must be removed from the tool's dust traps before reconnecting.
  • Static Build-up Prevention: It is crucial to ensure the hose is grounded to prevent static build-up. The dust collection network must be properly grounded; if in doubt, an electrician should be consulted.
  • Chemical Exposure Warning: The manual includes a California Proposition 65 warning regarding chemicals in dust created by power tool operation, advising users to work in a well-ventilated area and use OSHA/NIOSH approved, properly fitting face masks or respirators to reduce exposure.
  • Assembly: The tool should not be operated until it is completely assembled according to the instructions.

The POWERTEC Cyclone Dust Collection System is a practical solution for improving dust management in workshops, offering flexibility in setup and ease of maintenance to ensure efficient and safer operation.
