according to the instructions.
WARNING
Metal shavings or dust can set sawdust on re. Collect wood
materials only. Do not collect metal shavings or dust with
anything that has metal in it. Disconnect dust collector system
from any tool before working on metals. Remove all traces of
wood dust from inside that tool’s dust traps. Remove all traces
of metal shavings or dust before reconnecting the vacuum/dust
collector.
CAUTION
If using this Dust Collection Network to help keep airborne
wood dust in heavy usage within acceptable limits, you
must regularly monitor airborne dust and maintain the Dust
Collection Network to avoid exceeding dust limits. Each
application is unique. The maintenance schedule must be for
the specic Dust Collection Network being used.
IMPORTANT: Always ensure the dust collection network is
properly grounded. If in doubt, contact an electrician.

Overview

The POWERTEC 4" Dust Collection Network (Model No. 70306) is a system designed to be used with a vacuum cleaner or dust extractor that provides at least 100 CFM of airflow. Its primary function is to help manage and collect airborne wood dust generated during woodworking operations, thereby contributing to a cleaner and safer work environment.

Function Description:

The dust collection network is comprised of clear plastic components that assemble with a snug friction fit, requiring no glue or special tools. This design allows users to easily see and remove blockages at any point in the system. The network directs dust and debris from woodworking tools to a central vacuum cleaner or dust extractor. Blast gates are strategically placed to control airflow, allowing users to isolate specific tools and maximize suction efficiency. When a tool is in use, its corresponding blast gate is opened, while all other blast gates in the network are closed. This ensures that the vacuum/dust extractor's full suction power is directed to the active tool. The system is designed for shop floor layouts, with recommendations for positioning tools like jointers and planers closest to the vacuum/dust extractor for optimal performance.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Compatibility: Requires a vacuum cleaner/dust extractor with at least 100 CFM.
  • Pipe Diameter: 4" O.D. pipes.
  • Components Included:
    • 90° Elbow (Qty 1)
    • "Y" Connectors (Qty 4)
    • Blast Gates (Qty 5)
    • Splice (3.5" x 4" O.D.) (Qty 1)
    • Pipe (3' x 4" O.D.) (Qty 4)
    • Mounting Brackets (Qty 10)
    • Pan Head Screws (Qty 20)

  • Optional Accessories (sold separately): POWERTEC 70354 4-inch Quick Connect Dust Port Adapter, which can handle connection ports from 1-3/4" OD to 2-1/2" OD.

Usage Features:

  • Visibility: Clear plastic components allow for quick identification and removal of blockages.
  • Modular Design: Components assemble with a snug friction fit, simplifying installation and modification.
  • Airflow Control: Blast gates enable users to direct suction to specific tools, optimizing dust collection efficiency. Blast gates should always be assembled at the end of the "Y" connector directed toward the tool, and the "OUT" on the blast gate must be oriented toward the "Y" connector.
  • Flexible Installation: "Y" connectors should be angled away from the wall to allow clearance for the blast gate.
  • Customizable Pipe Lengths: The 3' length pipes can be cut to size using a pipe cutter or hacksaw with blades recommended for cutting plastic, ensuring all cuts are 90° and smooth.
  • Enhanced Vacuum Seal: Outside pipe joints can be wrapped in duct tape to improve the vacuum seal.
  • Quick Connect Adapter (Optional): The POWERTEC 70354 Quick Connect Dust Port Adapter offers a fast and convenient way to swap tools, featuring a very elastic rubber flange that seals well around tool ports ranging from 1-3/4" OD to 2-1/2" OD.
  • Safety First: Emphasizes reading and understanding all warnings and operating instructions, wearing eye protection (ANSI Z87.1 compliant), keeping the work area clean and well-lighted, and avoiding the use of power tools in dangerous, damp, or wet environments. Proper apparel, including protective hair covering and non-slip safety shoes, is also recommended.
  • Hazardous Material Avoidance: Explicitly warns against vacuuming burning or smoking materials, combustible explosive materials (coal, grain), hazardous/toxic/carcinogenic materials (asbestos, pesticide), or explosive liquids (gasoline, paint thinner). It also warns against collecting metal shavings or dust with wood materials due to fire risk.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Cleaning: The Dust Collection Network should be kept dry, clean, and free from oil and grease. A clean cloth should be used for cleaning.
  • Chemical Avoidance: Never use brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-based products, or strong solvents to clean the plastic components, as these chemicals can damage, weaken, or destroy the plastic, potentially leading to serious personal injury.
  • Obstruction Removal: Always turn off the machine before removing any obstructions from the network.
  • Canister Emptying: The vacuum cleaner/dust extractor canister should be emptied often.
  • Airborne Dust Monitoring: For heavy usage, regular monitoring of airborne dust levels and maintenance of the network are crucial to avoid exceeding dust limits. Each application is unique, so the maintenance schedule must be specific to the Dust Collection Network being used.
  • Grounding: It is important to ensure the dust collection network is properly grounded. If in doubt, an electrician should be contacted.
  • Servicing: When servicing, only identical replacement parts should be used to prevent hazards or product damage. All repairs should be performed by a qualified service technician to ensure safety and reliability.
