Overview

The Protekt® Aire 4000DX/5000DX system is a medical device designed for the prevention, treatment, and management of pressure ulcers. It consists of a smart pump unit and a cell-type mattress, providing continuous pressure redistribution and support to patients. This system is recommended for patients at medium risk of pressure ulcers.

Function Description:

The core function of the Protekt® Aire 4000DX/5000DX system is to reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers while optimizing patient comfort. The pump unit continuously monitors and adjusts the mattress pressure to provide alternating therapy, which helps to redistribute pressure points and prevent skin breakdown. It also offers a static therapy mode for a firm surface, useful for patient transfer or repositioning, and to prevent bottoming out when the patient is in a sitting position.

Usage Features:

Pump Unit Controls:

  • Power Key (1): Starts and stops the pump operation.
  • Weight Range (2): Up and down buttons to select the correct patient weight, which adjusts the pressure level.
  • Alarm Mute (3): Mutes the audible alarm that activates when mattress pressure is low. The alarm LED continues to flash. Pressing it again re-enables the audible alarm.
  • Static Mode (4): Sets the air mattress to static therapy mode, providing a firm surface. This mode automatically reverts to alternating mode after 20 minutes.

System Installation:

  1. Mattress Placement: Position the mattress replacement on the bed with the printed top cover facing upwards and air hoses towards the base. Secure it to the bed using adjustable straps, ensuring buckles are fastened and straps are tight. For profiling beds, secure side straps around the moveable sections of the bed base, avoiding side rails to prevent tearing.
  2. Pump Unit Placement: Hang the control unit hooks over the footboard of the bed or place it on the floor underneath.
  3. Hose Connection: Attach air hoses to the control unit using quick connectors, ensuring no kinks between the mattress, bed frame, and pump unit.
  4. Power Connection: Plug the power cord into a grounded AC outlet, verifying voltage compatibility.
  5. Inflation: Switch on the power button. Allow up to 40 minutes for full inflation.
  6. Comfort Level Selection: Once inflated, the power key indicator remains on. The patient can then be placed on the bed, and the appropriate comfort level selected using the weight range buttons.
  7. Bottom-Out Test: Perform a "bottom out" test by sliding a hand under the top cover along a deflated cell in the sacral area to ensure proper suspension. Sheets should be secured loosely to avoid interfering with cell alternation.

Operation:

  • General: The system is designed for maximum patient comfort. It is crucial to use the specified pump and avoid using pumps with pressure capacity greater than 120 mmHg to prevent cell damage. Do not change any components; contact a local dealer for replacements or repairs.
  • Patient Positioning: Once the pressure is adjusted, the patient can lie on the mattress. The static mode provides a firm surface for easier transfer or repositioning.
  • Hand Check: To verify proper pressure adjustment, slide a hand between the air mattress and bed frame to feel the patient's buttock. An acceptable space is approximately 25 to 40 mm (1" to 1.5").
  • Inflation Process: Upon power-on, the pump enters static mode, inflates the mattress to 15mmHg, then switches to alternating mode. If 15mmHg is not reached within 40 minutes, a low-pressure alarm will sound.
  • Alternating Cycle: The alternating cycle time is fixed at 10 minutes. The initial weight range/pressure level is 80kg/30mmHg, adjustable via the up/down buttons.
  • Low Pressure Warning: During normal operation, the unit monitors pressure. If mattress pressure falls below the set level, the pump automatically inflates it. A low-pressure condition due to tubing issues or air leakage will activate an alarm within 1 minute.

CPR Function:

  • In an emergency requiring CPR, pull the CPR strap located at the front right-hand side of the mattress head section to quickly release air from the mattress.

Maintenance Features:

Cleaning:

  • Frequency: Cleaning is required at least once a week for personal hygiene.
  • Pump Unit:
    • Do not immerse or soak the pump in water or fluids.
    • Check for external damage.
    • Spray or wipe the outside case with quaternary ammonium solution. Do not spray directly on the pump surface.
    • Avoid Hypocarbonate or Phenolic based cleaning solutions.
    • Allow the solution to incubate for 10 minutes or as per product instructions.
    • Wipe the case with a clean cloth, ensuring all areas are clean.
    • Clean the faceplate with a cleaning solution-sprayed cloth, avoiding excess solution on the faceplate or control panel.
    • Allow the surface to dry thoroughly.
    • After cleaning and drying, plug in and test the pump for normal operation.
    • Unplug and store with a proper identification tag.
    • Avoid long exposure to sunlight.
  • Mattress:
    • Cover Sheet: Brush or wipe down all surfaces with soap and water before disinfecting. For blood spots, wet thoroughly with 1:9 Hypochlorite solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water), allow to dry for 10 minutes, then blot with a clean, damp cloth.
    • Mattress (after removing top cover): Brush or wipe down all surfaces with soap and water. Immerse and soak covers in disinfectant for the required incubation time. After pre-soaking, rinse covers in a washer with no soap, then launder with mild detergent (wash temperature 93°F/34°C, rinse temperature 78°F/26°C or coldest setting).
    • Drying: Aerate covers until fully dry (drying temperature range 90-120°F/32-49°C or coldest setting).
    • Air Cells: Unsnap air cells from one side and spray all sides with disinfectant. Allow to sit for the required incubation time, then wipe with a clean cloth. Disconnect and spray all air cells and connecting tubes/hoses.
    • Base (if applicable): If there is a base after removing air cells, spray it inside and outside with disinfectant, allow to sit, then wipe with a cloth.
    • Tubing Set: Repeat the process for the tubing set: spray, incubate, and wipe clean.
    • Carrying Bag: Turn inside out, wipe down with disinfectant solution, allow to air dry, then turn back and wipe the outside.
    • Final Drying: Dry the mattress on a flat surface, away from direct sunlight.

General Maintenance Checks:

  • Power Cord and Plug: Check for abrasions or excessive wear.
  • Mattress Cover and Tubes: Inspect for wear or damage and ensure correct connections.
  • Pump Airflow: Plug in the pump and check airflow from the hose connection port; it should alternate between ports every half-cycle time.
  • Air Hoses: Check for kinks or breaks. Contact a local agent or dealer for replacements.
  • Mattress Tube Connections: Ensure they are well connected.
  • Power Indicators: Verify both power indicators are off when the switch is turned off.

Low Pressure Troubleshooting:

  • Connections: Check connectors between the air mattress and pump for disconnections and reconnect if necessary.
  • CPR Valves: Ensure their outlets are sealed.
  • Air-Connecting Tubes: Ensure each single cell is not broken.
  • Leakage Inspection: Set the pressure to Max firm, keep tubes fully inflated, and inspect for air leakage from cells. If any leakage occurs, contact a local agent or dealer.

Warranty:

The pump and mattress come with a 2-year warranty.
