kickbac
kforces. The operatorcan control kickback
forces, if properprecautionsare taken.
b) Use specialcare whenworking corners,sharp
edg
es etc. Avoid bouncing andsnagging the ac-
cessory. Corners, sharpedges or bouncing have a
tendencytosnagthe rotating accessoryand cause
loss of controlorkickback.
c) Do not attach atoothed sawblade. Suchblades
createfrequent kickbackand loss of control.
d) Always feed thebit into the material in the same
directionasthe cutting edge is exiting fromthe
material(which is thesame directionasthe
chips are thrown). Feeding the tool in the wrongdi-
rection causes the cuttingedge of the bit to climb out
of the work and pull the tool in the direction of this
feed.
e) When usingrotary files, cut-off wheels, high-
speedcuttersortungsten carbide cutters, always
have the work securely clamped. These wheels
will grabifthey become slightly canted in the groove,
and can kickback. When acut-offwheelgrabs,the
wheelitselfusually breaks. Whenarotaryfile, high-
speed cutterortungstencarbide cutter grabs, it may
jump from the groove and you could losecontrol of
the tool.
Safety warnings specific for grindingand abrasive
cutting-off operations:
a) Use onlywheeltypes that are recommendedfor
your power tooland only for recommendedap-
plications. Forexample:donot grind withthe side
of acut-off wheel. Abrasive cut-off wheels are in-
tended for peripheral grinding, side forces applied to
these wheels maycausethem to shatter.
b) For threaded abrasivecones andplugs use only
undamaged wheelmandrels with an unrelieved
shoulderflange that are of correctsize and
length. Proper mandrels will reduce the possibility
of breakage.
c) Do not “jam”acut-off wheel or apply excessive
pressure.Donot attempttomake an excessive
depth of cut. Overstressingthe wheelincreasesthe
loading and susceptibility to twisting or snagging of
the
wheelinthe cut and the possibilityofkickback
or wheelbreakage.
d) Do notposition yourhand in line with and behind
th
erotating wheel. Whenthe wheel, at the point of
operation, ismovingaway from your hand, the pos-
sible kickback maypropel the spinning wheel and
the power tool directlyatyou.
e) Whenwheelispinched, snagged or wheninter-
rupting acut for anyreason, switch off thepower
tooland hold the power toolmotionless untilthe
wheel comestoacomplete stop.Never attempt
to remove the cut-off wheel fromthe cut while
the wheel is in motion otherwise kickbackmay
occur. Investigate and take correctiveactiontoelim-
inate the cause of wheelpinching or snagging.
f) Do not restart thecutting operationinthe work-
piece. Letthe wheel reach full speedand care-
fully re-enter the cut. Thewheelmay bind, walk up
or kickbackifthe power tool is restarted in the work-
piece.
g) Support panelsorany oversized workpiece to
minimize therisk of wheel pinching and kick-
back. Large workpieces tend to sagunder their own
weight. Supports must be placed under the work-
piece nearthe line of cut and nearthe edge of the
workpiece on both sides of the wheel.
h) Use extra cautionwhen making a“pocket cut”
into existing walls or otherblind areas. Thepro-
trudingwheelmay cutgas or water pipes,electrical
wiring or objects thatcan cause kickback.
Safety warnings specific for wire brushingopera-
tions:
a) Be aware that wirebristles are thrown by the
brush even duringordinary operation. Do not
overstress thewiresbyapplying excessiveload
to thebrush. The wire bristles can easily penetrate
light clothing and/or skin.
b) Allow brushes to run at operating speed for at
least one minute before using them.During this
time no one is to stand in front or in line with the
brush. Loose bristles or wires will be discharged dur-
ing the run-in time.
