Overview

The PurTest PT Series is a line of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection systems designed to provide a 99% reduction of all waterborne pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria. These systems are intended for use in residential and commercial applications to ensure microbiologically safe water.

Function Description

The PurTest PT Series utilizes UV light to destroy micro-organisms in water supplies. The UV lamp emits a peak radiation of 254 nanometer wavelength (nm), which effectively destroys or inactivates the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) of bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. This process is a physical method of disinfection that does not use chemicals, making it an environmentally friendly solution. The system is designed for continuous operation, providing constant disinfection as water flows through the unit.

Important Technical Specifications

The PT Series includes several models, specifically PT-8, PT-12, and PT-20, which are differentiated primarily by their flow rates and physical dimensions.

  • UV Lamp: Each unit contains a single ultraviolet germicidal lamp housed within a single quartz sleeve, surrounded by a stainless steel pressure chamber. The lamp is designed for 9,000 hours of continuous operation.
  • Flow Rates:
    • PT-8: 8 gallons per minute (gpm)
    • PT-12: 12 gpm
    • PT-20: 20 gpm
  • Electrical:
    • All models operate on 120V/60Hz.
    • PT-8: 0.03 KW, 0.25 AMP
    • PT-12: 0.03 KW, 0.25 AMP
    • PT-20: 0.03 KW, 0.25 AMP
  • Dimensions (L x W x D):
    • PT-8: 21" x 3.5" x 3.5"
    • PT-12: 32" x 3.5" x 3.5"
    • PT-20: 35" x 5" x 5"
  • Weight:
    • PT-8: 9 Lbs.
    • PT-12: 18 Lbs.
    • PT-20: 21 Lbs.
  • Pipe Size:
    • PT-8: 3/4" MIP
    • PT-12: 3/4" MIP
    • PT-20: 1" MIP
  • Water Quality Parameters (Maximum Concentrations):
    • Turbidity: 5 NTU
    • Hardness: 7 gpg
    • Iron: 0.3 ppm
    • Manganese: 0.05 ppm
    • pH: 6.5 - 9.5 ppm
    • Note: Pre-filtration equipment may be required if these parameters cannot be maintained.

Usage Features

The PurTest PT Series is designed for straightforward installation and operation.

  • Installation: The unit should be installed in a vertical position in an enclosed area with good ventilation. It is recommended to install the unit at the point of use or point of entry after any other water treatment devices (e.g., softeners, filters). Plumbing connections are made using standard fittings. A flow control device is included to ensure the water flow rate does not exceed the maximum capacity of the unit, optimizing UV exposure.
  • Operation: The system includes a UV lamp detector and timer circuit board that provides continuous monitoring of the UV lamp's operational status. A solid-state electronic circuit board provides the latest in UV lamp monitoring technology.
  • Visual Indicators: A green LED on the control box indicates normal operation. If the green LED is flashing, it signifies that the lamp has exceeded 1 year of operation and needs replacement. A flashing yellow LED indicates that the lamp needs replacement within 30 days. A flashing red LED indicates that the lamp has exceeded 1 year of operation, requires replacement, and the timer needs to be reset. A continuous red LED indicates that the UV lamp is not lit.
  • Audible Alarm: The system features an audible alarm with a snooze button. The alarm will sound intermittently for a flashing yellow or red LED, and continuously for a continuous red LED. The snooze button allows for temporary silencing of the alarm.
  • Safety Features: The system is equipped with a safety interlock that prevents the UV lamp from operating when the quartz sleeve is removed, protecting users from direct UV exposure.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of the PurTest PT Series.

  • UV Lamp Replacement: The UV lamp has a rated life of 9,000 hours (approximately 1 year of continuous use). The system's monitoring system will alert the user when the lamp needs to be replaced. Replacing the lamp involves turning off the water, disconnecting power, removing the old lamp, and inserting a new one.
  • Quartz Sleeve Cleaning/Replacement: The quartz sleeve should be cleaned periodically to remove any mineral deposits or debris that may accumulate and reduce UV light transmission. Cleaning involves removing the sleeve and wiping it with a mild soap and water solution, followed by a vinegar rinse. The quartz sleeve should be replaced if it is cracked or damaged.
  • O-Ring Maintenance: O-rings should be inspected during lamp and quartz sleeve maintenance and replaced if they show signs of wear or damage to prevent leaks.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues such as the UV lamp not lighting (check input voltage, line cord, ballast, lamp, wiring) and leaks at the quartz nipple (defective or cracked O-ring, O-ring not seated properly).
  • Disinfection Procedure: In cases where the system has been off for an extended period or if there is a concern about water quality, a disinfection procedure using household bleach is recommended to sanitize the distribution system. This involves introducing a measured amount of bleach into the water system and allowing it to circulate before flushing.

The PurTest PT Series is a reliable and effective solution for ensuring safe drinking water through UV disinfection, provided that proper installation, operation, and maintenance guidelines are followed.
