Overview

The document describes the QSR series Retractable Thruster by QS Seamaster, a device designed for marine propulsion. This user manual, identified as REV 000A, provides comprehensive information on its installation, operation, maintenance, and technical specifications.

Function Description

The QSR retractable thruster is a marine propulsion unit with two distinct movements:

  1. Main Movement (Tilting Type): This relates to the propulsion part itself, designed to tilt. The hinges are engineered for high resistance and are located on a flat flange surface that connects the pre-assembled structure to the hull's solid support.
  2. Secondary Movement (Lid Closing): This movement facilitates the closing of the through-hull fitting from which the tunnel emerges. It also operates around the hinge, designed to open the lid without interference when properly installed.

The thruster is intended to provide maneuverability for boats, particularly for bow thruster applications. It is equipped with protections that limit its operation time, as detailed in the control manual. The system includes an actuator for controlling the retraction and extension of the thruster.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual provides detailed technical data for various QSR models: QSR 80-185, QSR 100-185, QSR 160-250, and QSR 230-250.

Usage Features

The QSR retractable thruster is designed for nautical use and controlled via QAJ remote controls (QAJ0T, QAJ1T, QAJ2T).

Operational Modes:

  • Start-up: Upon switching on, the RTC R1 board verifies the thruster's position. If raised, no action is taken. If lowered or in an intermediate position, it commands ascent.
  • Retraction (Ascent): When the QAJ control is disabled, the thruster begins its ascent. Left/right commands are inhibited. The RTC R1 board monitors linear actuator current; if high absorption due to mechanical friction occurs, ascent is briefly reversed and then restarted. After 3 attempts, a problem is signaled.
  • Extension (Descent): When the QAJ control is enabled, the thruster begins its descent. Left/right commands are inhibited. Similar to ascent, the RTC R1 board monitors actuator current and reverses/restarts descent if high absorption is detected. After 3 attempts, a problem is signaled.
  • Automatic Ascent: If the propeller is lowered and no QAJ right or left control input is received for 6 minutes, the thruster automatically performs the ascent procedure.
  • Error Detection: If the QAJ sends an error signal (prolonged control, line interruption, short circuit), the retractable thruster performs the ascent procedure.

Safety Precautions during Usage:

  • Not designed for continuous use; operation time is limited by built-in protections. Bypassing these protections voids the warranty.
  • Before operation, ensure no bathers or floating objects are nearby.
  • Avoid sailing with the thruster open to prevent damage.
  • Perform opening/closing at a maximum speed of 4 knots (according to currents), and reversing at a maximum speed of 2 knots (according to currents).
  • Do not enable the thruster at speeds over four knots.
  • Ensure no flammable materials are near the bow thruster motor.
  • During docking, avoid leaving free ropes in the water to prevent them from being sucked into the propellers.

Emergency Closing:

  • In an emergency, the propeller can be locked in the closed position. On the actuator, under a sticker (Ø185) or plastic cover (Ø250), there is a slotted screw. Turning it clockwise with a screwdriver closes the system. Always disconnect the QSR propeller from power before performing this.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the QSR retractable thruster's longevity and efficiency. QS Seamaster thrusters are made of sea-resistant materials, but periodic cleaning of salt deposits is necessary.

Annual Maintenance (Dismantle once a year):

  • Clean propellers, tunnel, and gearleg.
  • Replace damaged or worn-out propellers.
  • Replace anodes (more often if needed) and, if possible, grease the double joint with marine grease.
  • Check the tightness of all screws.
  • Ensure no water seepage inside.
  • Verify all electrical connections are well tightened and free of oxidation.
  • Check battery conditions.
  • Remove graphite residues from normal motor brush use.

Periodic Checks:

  • Periodically check and, if necessary, replace oil seals.

Important Maintenance Warnings:

  • Always ensure the power supply to the electric motor is switched off when performing maintenance operations.
  • Do not paint the anodes, sealings, and gearleg shafts where the propellers are lodged.

The manual also details spare parts for QSR Ø185 and QSR Ø250 models, including motors, contactors, gearlegs, propellers, and various mechanical components. It emphasizes that disassembly and scrapping operations at the end of the product's lifetime must be performed by qualified personnel, adhering to local recycling and disposal regulations.
