Notation
For
clarity and brevity,
we
use some special notation and type styles in this
book.
CAPITALS and punctuation
Indicate material which must be entered exactly
as
it
appears. (The only
punctuation symbols not entered are ellipses, explained below.) For example,
in
the
line:
DIR
SYS
every letter
and
character should be typed exactly
as
indicated.
lowercase italics
Represent
words, letters, characters
or
values you supply from a set
of
acceptable values for a particular command. For example, the line:
LIST filespec
indicates that you can supply any valid file specification (defined later) after
LIST.
. . . (ellipsis)
Indicates that preceding items can be repeated. For example:
ATTRIB
filespec {option
,.
..
}
indicates
that
several options may be repeated inside the braces.

This special symbol
is
used occasionally to indicate a blank-space character
(ASCII code32 decimal, 20 hexadecimal).
