Overview

The Regency RH256 and RU156 are sixteen-channel land mobile transceivers designed for two-way radio communication. These devices offer a range of features including CTCSS tone, scanning capabilities, a monitor switch, and a night/day switch.

Function Description:

The transceivers operate in two main modes: Manual Mode and Scan Mode.

  • Manual Mode: In this mode, the user can select a specific channel for communication. Channels 1 through 10 are selected by pressing the corresponding number on the keyboard. For channels 11 through 16, the user presses the first digit (1) followed by the second digit (1-6). The radio operates on the displayed channel, and the scan LED remains off.
  • Scan Mode: This mode allows the radio to monitor activity across multiple channels. By pressing the SCAN button on the keyboard, the radio enters scan mode, and the scan LED illuminates. The radio will scan channels that have been added to the scan list, provided the microphone is on-hook (connected to chassis ground) and the squelch control is adjusted to squelch the radio in the absence of a carrier. When activity is detected on a channel in the scan list, the scan LED will remain on, and the active channel will be displayed. After the signal drops, the radio will stay on the channel for a programmable period (0.5 to 2 seconds) before resuming scanning. If the microphone is lifted off-hook during this period, the radio will remain locked on that channel.

Priority Function:

The priority function enables the operator to monitor a non-priority channel while simultaneously ensuring that important messages on a designated priority channel are not missed. This function is activated or deactivated by pressing the PRIOR button on the keyboard, indicated by the priority LED. To change the priority channel, the user selects the desired channel and then presses the PRO PRIOR and ENTER buttons.

  • Priority-Manual Operation: When the radio is listening on a non-priority channel, it will periodically check the priority channel. If the priority channel becomes active, the radio will stop on that channel and monitor the transmission, regardless of activity on the non-priority channel. Lifting the microphone off-hook causes the radio to revert to the priority channel.
  • Priority-Scan Operation: In scan mode with the priority function selected, if the radio stops scanning on a non-priority channel, it will occasionally check the priority channel. If there is activity on the priority channel, the radio will stay on it; otherwise, it will return to the interrupted non-priority channel.

Transmitter Function:

To transmit, the user selects the desired channel, lifts the microphone off-hook, and monitors the channel to ensure it is not in use. The transmitter is activated by pressing the push-to-talk (PTT) button on the side of the microphone. Two-way conversation is achieved by pressing the PTT button to talk and releasing it to listen. The PTT button is not enabled when the microphone is on-hook. During transmission, the keyboard is disabled to prevent accidental interruptions.

Usage Features:

  • Volume Control/On-Off Switch: This control adjusts the speaker volume and turns the radio on/off. The radio remembers its last state even if the power plug is disconnected.
  • Squelch Control: Used to eliminate speaker noise when no transmission is being received. Turning it clockwise until noise is heard (or scanning stops in SCAN mode), then counter-clockwise until the noise is squelched (or scanning resumes), sets the squelch level.
  • Monitor Switch: Placing this switch in the "MON" position allows the user to monitor the channel even when the CTCSS decoder is active.
  • Night/Day Switch: In "DAY" position, the display lights are at maximum luminosity, and the keyboard is not lit. In "NIGHT" position, display luminosity is decreased, and the keyboard is illuminated.
  • Status LEDs: Four LEDs indicate the radio's status:
    • TX: Lit when the transmitter is active (microphone off-hook and PTT pressed).
    • SCAN: Lit when the radio is in SCAN mode.
    • MSG: Lit when a message has been received and the CTCSS decoder is active. Resets when going off-hook or changing channels.
    • PRIOR: Lit when the priority function is selected.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Check-up: The transceiver should be checked semi-annually by a Regency Sales/Service Center for proper operation.
  • FCC Regulations: Any repairs or adjustments to the transmitter must be performed under the supervision of a technician holding a general radiotelephone license. Users are warned not to tamper with internal adjustments.

Models Specifics:

  • RH256: Operates in the VHF frequency range in three bands:
    • RH256A: 134 to 150 MHz
    • RH256B: 150 to 162 MHz
    • RH256C & RH256UK: 162 to 174 MHz
    • RH256UK: An RH256C variant designed for 12.5 KHz channel spacing and ±2.5 KHz maximum system modulation deviation.
  • RU156: Operates in the UHF frequency range in three bands:
    • RU156A: 421.4 to 450 MHz
    • RU156B: 450 to 462 MHz
    • RU156C: 462 to 512 MHz

Installation:

  • Designed for mobile operation in a vehicle with a 12V negative ground system.
  • The red wire (with in-line 5A fuse) connects to the positive battery terminal, and the black wire connects to the negative battery terminal.
  • Mount the radio in an accessible, non-cramped area, allowing a few inches of clearance on the right side for heat dissipation.
  • The microphone hang-up clip should be mounted in a convenient, grounded location. For vehicles with plastic dashboards, a ground wire may be needed for the clip.
  • Antenna installation should be performed by a technician experienced in two-way radio installation.
  • The transceiver has reverse polarity protection; if power leads are reversed, the fuse will blow and needs to be replaced with a new 5A fuse.
