Overview

The Reliance SG-720 is a high-frequency industrial battery charger designed for deep-cycle flooded lead-acid batteries. It is optimized for specific battery configurations, including Trojan 6 x T-105 (36V), 6 x T-875 (48V), or 4 x T-1275 (48V), depending on the model. Using this charger with other battery types may cause damage, injury, fire, or explosion, and could void warranties.

Function Description:

The SG-720 charges lead-acid batteries by converting AC input power to DC output power. It features an LED indicator that displays the charging status and identifies faults. The charger automatically starts when connected to a battery and terminates charging once the batteries reach a 100% state of charge, indicated by a solid green LED light. After completing a charge cycle, it enters a float charge mode, continuously monitoring battery voltage and reactivating charging if the state of charge drops to 80% or after 30 days, whichever comes first.

  • Over Temperature Protection: Decreases power output if temperatures exceed normal operating ranges. If the charger exceeds 149°F (65°C), it automatically stops charging and enters standby mode until temperatures normalize.
  • Reverse Polarity Protection: Automatically shuts down if batteries are connected improperly to prevent damage.
  • No Load Protection: Provides zero output when the DC paddle is disconnected.
  • Short Circuit Protection: Automatically shuts down if a short circuit is detected and resumes normal charging once rectified.
  • Auto Shut Down: Automatically shuts down and provides zero DC output with a solid green light when batteries are fully charged.

Usage Features:

  • Mounting: The charger has four mounting holes and two hanger holes in its aluminum base, allowing for multiple configurations. It is recommended to use 1/4 - 20 nuts and bolts for secure mounting. Screws are not recommended. The center holes can be used with a securely mounted hook.
    • Preferred Orientations: Horizontally flat with the fan (handle) facing upwards without obstruction, vertically with AC/DC cords facing up or down, or side-mounted with AC/DC cords facing left or right.
    • Non-Preferred Orientation: Horizontally mounted with the fan (handle) facing the ground.
    • Installation Note: Always mount the charger to a non-combustible surface (metal, brick, concrete) and ensure at least 3 inches of space around the fan for cooling.
  • Operation Steps:
    1. Connect the AC power cord to a 3-prong grounded wall outlet before connecting the DC paddle to the vehicle. The LED indicator will flash red/green repeatedly.
    2. Insert the DC paddle into the vehicle's charger receptacle. The fan will turn on, and the LED will flash red/green while determining battery capacity and ambient temperature (up to 90 seconds).
    3. The charger will automatically start, and the LED will indicate the state of charge.
    4. To disconnect during a charge cycle, first unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet, then remove the DC paddle from the vehicle.
    5. Charging terminates automatically when batteries are full (solid green LED).
    6. Before driving, firmly grasp and pull the DC charger paddle straight out of the receptacle.
    7. Unplug the charger from the AC wall outlet if not frequently used.
    8. Store the charger in a safe place when not in use.
  • Charging Status Indicators:
    • Red flash, pause for 3 seconds: Charging 0%-19%
    • Red flash, pause for 1 second: Charging 20%-79%
    • Yellow flash, pause for 1 second: Charging 80%-99%
    • Solid green light: Charged 100%
    • Red-green flash: Idle, Precharge Diagnostics, or Error (refer to fault table for details).
  • DC Output Polarity: The BLACK DC cable must connect to the battery negative (-), and the WHITE or RED DC cable to the battery positive (+). The charger will not operate if polarity is reversed.
  • Vehicle Interlock: The SG-720 does not activate vehicle charger interlock features. Always disconnect the DC paddle before moving the vehicle.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: If cleaning is required, always ensure the DC charger paddle is disconnected from the golf cart charging port and the AC cord is unplugged from the wall outlet. Use a slightly damp, soft cloth to clean the charger. Never use cleaning solvents.
  • Ventilation: Always use the charger in a well-ventilated area to prevent the buildup of explosive hydrogen gas from lead-acid batteries.
  • Fault Resolution: The manual provides an LED flash pattern guide for various faults (No-Load, Over-Voltage/Current, Over/Under Temperature, Charger Overheat, Charger Under-Voltage, Input AC Abnormal) with corresponding resolutions. If issues persist after troubleshooting, contact technical support. Do not continue to use a malfunctioning charger.
