RESOL SP1
Housing:

Protection type:
IP 65
Dimensions:
80 x 80 x 53 mm
Ambient temperature:
-25 ... +70 °C
Overvoltage protection
The RESOL overvoltage protection device SP1 should be used in order to protect the
susceptible temperature sensors in or at the collector against induced overvoltages.
In the case of local thunderstorms, voltage peaks which could destroy the sensor can be
induced in the sensor cable. The protector diodes in the SP1 limit these overvoltages
to a value harmless to the sensor.
The best way to protect the sensor is to install this connecting box close to the sensor.
Because of the weather conditions, the SP1 is designed as a robust connecting box in a
dripping water-protected housing which can be used outdoors. Seven rubber glands for
the sensor cables in the side walls of the connecting box allow for an easy installation
in each position.

Overview

The RESOL SP1 is an overvoltage protection device designed to safeguard susceptible temperature sensors, particularly those used in or at solar collectors, from induced overvoltages. Its primary function is to protect sensors from voltage peaks caused by local lightning strikes and other externally induced voltages, which could otherwise lead to sensor damage. The device achieves this by employing protector diodes that limit these overvoltages to a level harmless to the sensor.

Function Description

The RESOL SP1 acts as a protective barrier for temperature sensors. In the event of local thunderstorms or other sources of electromagnetic interference, voltage peaks can be induced in the sensor cable. These peaks, if unchecked, can exceed the sensor's tolerance and cause permanent damage. The SP1's internal protector diodes are engineered to shunt or clamp these transient overvoltages, ensuring that the voltage reaching the sensor remains within its safe operating limits. This extends the lifespan of the sensors and maintains the reliability of the overall system. The device is intended to be operated on Safety Extra-Low Voltage (SELV) systems, which is a crucial safety consideration for its application.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Housing: The device is housed in a plastic enclosure, chosen for its durability and protective qualities.
  • Protection Type: It boasts an IP 65 protection rating. This signifies that the housing is dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction, making it suitable for outdoor use and in environments where it might be exposed to dripping water or light splashes.
  • Dimensions: The physical dimensions of the RESOL SP1 are 80 x 80 x 53 mm, indicating a compact design that allows for flexible installation in various locations.
  • Ambient Temperature Range: The device is designed to operate reliably across a wide ambient temperature range, from -25 °C to +70 °C. This broad range makes it suitable for use in diverse climatic conditions, from cold winters to hot summers, which is particularly important for outdoor solar applications.
  • Connection Paths: The device features two connection paths (1A/1B and 2A/2B), allowing for the connection of a sensor cable to terminals 1A and 1B, and a connecting box cable to terminals 2A and 2B. This design facilitates straightforward integration into existing sensor wiring.
  • Compliance: The device carries the CE mark, indicating its conformity with European health, safety, and environmental protection standards.

Usage Features

  • Overvoltage Protection: The core feature is its robust protection against overvoltages from local lightning strokes and other externally induced voltages, safeguarding sensitive sensor electronics.
  • Dripping Water Protection: The housing is specifically designed to be protected against dripping water, making it suitable for outdoor installations where exposure to rain or condensation is expected. This is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the internal electronics.
  • Easy Mounting: The design facilitates easy mounting. After loosening two screws, the upper part of the housing can be removed. The lower part of the connecting box can then be fastened to a plane and stable surface using two designated holes. Protective caps are provided to cover the screw holes from the bottom, ensuring a clean and secure installation.
  • Flexible Cable Entry: The device is equipped with seven rubber glands on its side walls for sensor cables. These glands allow for easy installation in various positions and ensure a tight seal against moisture ingress. Users are instructed to pierce the cable glands with a pointed object and insert the cables, pulling them slightly back to ensure the rubber layer turns outwards, enhancing moisture protection.
  • Polarity Consideration: For sensors that require polarity consideration (e.g., irradiation sensor CS10), the device ensures that cables with the same designation (e.g., 1A to 2A, and 1B to 2B) are connected to maintain correct polarity.
  • Outdoor Suitability: The SP1 is explicitly designed for outdoor use. If installed outdoors, it is recommended to pierce the condensation water hole at the bottom of the device after installation to allow any accumulated moisture to drain, preventing internal condensation issues.
  • Proximity to Sensor: For optimal protection, it is recommended to install the connecting box as close as possible to the sensor it is protecting. This minimizes the length of unprotected cable susceptible to induced voltages.

Maintenance Features

  • Robust Construction: The robust plastic housing and IP 65 rating contribute to a low-maintenance design, as it is well-protected against environmental factors like dust and water.
  • Qualified Personnel: Installation and maintenance of the device should be carried out by suitably qualified personnel. This ensures that the device is correctly installed and any potential issues are addressed by individuals with the necessary expertise, adhering to safety guidelines and local regulations.
  • Safety Extra-Low Voltage (SELV): Operating on SELV reduces the risk of electrical shock during maintenance, enhancing safety for personnel.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Adherence to various regulations such as local regulations, statutory provisions for industrial accident prevention, environmental protection, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Part P of the Building Regulations 2005, and BS7671 Requirements for electrical installations, ensures that the device is maintained in a safe and compliant manner.
  • Cable Management: The design of the cable glands, which ensures a tight seal and protection against moisture, also contributes to reduced maintenance by preventing water ingress that could lead to corrosion or short circuits.
  • Condensation Drainage: The recommendation to pierce the condensation water hole for outdoor installations is a simple yet effective maintenance step to prevent internal moisture buildup, which could otherwise degrade performance or damage components over time.
