Function Description:

The PJ2 COM Radio serves as a portable communication device for aircraft, allowing users to transmit and receive on aviation communication frequencies. It is equipped with a numeric keypad for manual frequency selection, a search function to scan the frequency range for active signals, and memory channels to store frequently used frequencies. The radio also includes a NOAA Weather Band for accessing weather information and a dedicated 121.5 MHz emergency frequency button for quick access in critical situations. Its Push-To-Talk (PTT) button enables transmission, and it supports both internal and external microphones, accommodating various headset configurations. The device features an LCD screen that displays the current frequency, last frequency, and other operational information, along with a backlit keypad and screen for visibility in different lighting conditions.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Requires installation of 6 AA alkaline batteries.
  • Power On/Off and Volume Control: A combination knob on the top of the unit controls power and volume. Rotate clockwise to turn on and increase volume, counterclockwise to decrease volume and turn off.
  • Manual Frequency Selection: Enter desired frequencies using the numeric keypad. Six digits may be required for certain frequencies. The radio displays the current and last frequencies.
  • Flip/Flop Button: A dedicated button on the left side allows quick switching between the current and last used frequencies.
  • Frequency Search: Press and hold the Up or Down Key for one second to automatically search the entire frequency range for broadcasting signals. The radio will temporarily stop on an active frequency and resume searching if the signal is lost. The search direction can be reversed, and the search can be canceled with the Clear Key.
  • Memory Storage: Store up to 20 frequently used COMM and WX frequencies in memory channels. Press the Memory Key, select an available channel (indicated by an arrow), and press the Memory Key again to store. Existing channels can be overwritten.
  • Memory Recall: Access stored frequencies by pressing the Recall Key. Scroll through channels using the Up/Down Keys or directly enter the channel number with the Numeric Keypad.
  • Memory Scan: Scan through stored memory channels by entering the Recall function and then pressing and holding the Up or Down Key for one second. The radio will stop on active signals.
  • NOAA Weather Band Access: Press the WX Key to recall and listen to the ten stored NOAA weather frequencies.
  • Emergency Frequency (121.5 MHz): Hold down the "2" key (labeled 121.5) for 3 seconds to instantly tune to 121.5 MHz. This feature works in any mode.
  • Key Lock: Hold the Clear Key and press the Down Key to lock the keypad, preventing accidental input. Repeat to unlock. PTT and Light functions are unaffected.
  • Screen and Keypad Lighting:
    • Automatic Lighting: By default, the screen and keypad light up for five seconds when any button is pressed or a frequency becomes active.
    • Indefinite Lighting: Press and hold the Light Button for one second until a beep is heard to activate indefinite lighting. Press again to turn off.
    • Deactivating Automatic Lighting: Hold the Clear Key and press the Light Button. The screen will display "LIGHT OFF." Repeat to reactivate.
  • Adjustable Backlight Modes:
    • Low Back Light Mode: Press Clear Key + 7 Key. Adjust levels from 0 to 10 using Up/Down Keys. Press Clear Key to save.
    • High Back Light Mode: Press Clear Key + 8 Key. Adjust levels from 10 to 99 using Up/Down Keys. Press Clear Key to save.
  • LCD Contrast Adjustment: Press Clear Key + 9 Key. Adjust contrast using Up/Down Keys. Press Clear Key to save.
  • Night Mode: While on the LCD contrast adjustment screen (Clear Key + 9 Key), press the 4 Key to activate night vision mode. Press Clear Key to save.
  • Normal Mode: While on the LCD contrast adjustment screen (Clear Key + 9 Key), press the 5 Key to activate normal vision mode. Press Clear Key to save.
  • Squelch Control: A knob on the top allows adjustment of the squelch level to filter out static.
  • External Power and Antenna Options: Features a BNC connector for an external antenna and a USB-C power port for external power (requires 2.4 amps).
  • Headset Jacks: Standard twin plug aviation headset jacks for earphone and microphone. Internal speaker/microphone are disabled when these jacks are used.
  • Side-tone: The radio supports side-tone functionality.
  • Wrist Strap Attachment: A point for attaching a wrist strap.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: The PJ2 COM uses six 1.5 volt AA alkaline batteries. To replace, turn off the unit, remove the battery pack (by holding the belt clip out and lifting the latch), slide up the battery cover, and replace batteries according to polarity markings.
  • Battery Storage: Remove batteries if the radio will not be used for six months or more to prevent corrosion.
  • Cleaning: Clean the transceiver with a soft cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution. Avoid abrasive cleaners or chemical solvents.
  • Troubleshooting (Temperature): If operating outside the recommended temperature range (-20°F to 122°F), the LCD may not display the selected frequency or characters may change slowly. These irregularities will disappear when the unit returns to the recommended temperature range.
  • Memory Clear:
    • Single Channel: Press and hold Clear Key + Memory Key. Use Up/Down Keys to select the channel, then press Memory Clear Key (0 Key) to clear.
    • All Channels: Hold down the Clear Key while turning on the power. Note: This action cannot be reversed.
  • Warranty: One-year warranty for defective workmanship or parts under normal use. Does not cover misuse, battery leakage, neglect, accidents, or unauthorized repairs. Service is available through Sporty's Pilot Shop.
