Overview

This document describes the installation, operation, and warranty conditions for Rheem Electric Storage Water Heaters.

Function Description

The Rheem Electric Storage Water Heater is designed to provide a stable supply of hot water for various household needs. It stores and heats water using an electrical heating element, maintaining a set temperature through an adjustable thermostat. The appliance is equipped with several safety features, including a thermostat, a thermal energy cutout, and a Temperature and Pressure Relief (TPR) valve, all of which are crucial for safe operation. The water heater is intended for indoor installation and is available in various tank capacities to suit different hot water demands, allowing for simultaneous multi-point hot water usage. Its design emphasizes energy efficiency through thick polyurethane foam insulation, which helps retain heat and reduce operating costs. The heater jacket is constructed from industrial-strength prepainted steel, offering durability and corrosion resistance.

Usage Features

To use the appliance, it is important to first ensure proper installation and filling. Before turning on the electrical power supply, the water heater must be completely filled with water. This is achieved by opening all hot water taps in the house, including the shower, to release trapped air, and then opening the cold water inlet to the water heater. Water should flow from each hot water tap without any air presence, indicating that the heater is fully filled. Once filled, all hot water taps should be closed, and plumbing connections checked for leaks.

When operating the appliance, it is recommended to always turn on the cold water tap first when there is a demand for water, and likewise, to close the hot water tap first to avoid scalding. Hot water can be mixed with cold water by adjusting the taps to achieve the desired temperature. The adjustable thermostat automatically controls the electricity supply to the heating unit, ensuring a constant temperature is maintained. The factory preset temperature is 65°C, which is considered safe and economical. If the electrical thermostat cuts off, stored hot water can still be used, and the water heater will automatically reactivate when the stored water reaches a minimum set temperature. In case of an interrupted inlet water supply, the main power supply to the heater should be switched off to prevent dry firing, which can damage the appliance. It is important not to draw off hot water from an empty water heater.

The appliance is designed for mains pressure, ensuring a consistent flow of hot water. The "Rheemglas" vitreous enamel lining and sacrificial anode rod contribute to the extended lifespan of the tank, aiming for years of trouble-free performance. The thick polyurethane foam insulation, free of CFCs, enhances energy efficiency by retaining heat and reducing operating costs. The heater jacket, made of industrial-strength prepainted steel, provides exceptional strength and corrosion resistance.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the safe performance, peak efficiency, and longevity of the Rheem Electric Storage Water Heater. Rheem recommends annual inspections and servicing by a qualified person.

One key maintenance task involves the Temperature and Pressure Relief (TPR) valve. Routine preventative maintenance, at least once every 6 months, is recommended to remove lime deposits and verify that the valve is operating correctly and that the discharge line is not blocked. Failure to perform this routine inspection can lead to serious issues, including the risk of the water heater exploding. To manually operate the TPR valve, the lever handle should be carefully lifted and released to ensure the valve operates freely, allowing several liters of water to flush through the discharge line. The discharge water should be directed to a floor drain, and contact with the discharge water should be avoided to prevent scalding. If no water flows out during this operation, a serviceman should be contacted. Damage to the water heater due to blockage or restriction at the overflow outlet will void the manufacturer's warranty. It is normal for water to drip from the TPR discharge pipe during a heat-up cycle. The discharge pipe must not be restricted or blocked, and no holes should be drilled in the sides of the appliance.

For long periods of non-use, such as during vacations, or for servicing, the water heater should be isolated. This involves switching off the electrical power supply to the appliance and closing the cold water supply stopcock valve at the heater's inlet.

Draining the heater is necessary for TPR replacement or other maintenance. This process involves disconnecting all power, turning off the cold water supply, releasing pressure by operating the TPR valve, undoing the cold water inlet union, attaching a hose to the heater side of the union, and draining it to waste. Operating the TPR valve lever/knob allows air into the heater, facilitating water drainage. After draining, the TPR valve can be removed and replaced.

Water quality is an important consideration for the longevity of the water heater. The vitreous enamel lined cylinder is warranted only when the total dissolved solids (TDS) content in the water is less than 600 mg/L and a black color-coded magnesium anode (supplied with this heater) is used. Using an incorrect anode can shorten the life of the water heater cylinder. The anode slowly dissipates while protecting the cylinder, and its life can be extended by replacement. For all water supplies, if the anode is not replaced during a major 5-year service, the maximum time after installation when the anode should be replaced for this water heater is 8 years. The corrosion-resistant heating unit is not warranted if the chloride concentration of the water supply exceeds 200ppm.

All electrical work and permanent wiring must be carried out by a qualified person in accordance with wiring rules, local codes, and regulatory authority requirements. For replacement parts, only original parts from the manufacturer should be used; non-approved parts will void the warranty. Power must be turned off before any service and maintenance work.
