The Rhodes MK8 is a next-generation tine piano, building upon the unique history of Rhodes pianos while incorporating modern features and design. This quickstart guide provides essential information for unboxing, assembly, connections, power, sound adjustments, and pedal connection, along with important safety guidelines.

Function Description:

The Rhodes MK8 is a musical instrument designed to produce the classic sound of a tine piano. It features a full keyboard for playing musical notes and a control panel for shaping the sound. The instrument is equipped with a PREAMP section, an EQUALIZER section, and a VARI-PAN section, allowing for extensive sound customization. It supports both stereo and mono audio outputs, as well as a dedicated headphone output for private practice. A sustain pedal can be connected to enhance playability.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Input: 15V/1A, utilizing a 4-pin XLR power connector.
  • Audio Outputs:
    • Stereo: Two 1/4 inch jack outputs (L/MONO, R) and two XLR outputs (L, R).
    • Mono: Left 1/4 inch jack output (L/MONO) or left XLR output (L).
  • Headphone Output: Built-in output located on the left cheek block, with a rotary control for volume adjustment.

  • Unboxing and Registration: The MK8 should be unboxed by two people to ensure safe handling and inspection for damage. Owners are encouraged to scan a QR code on their Rhodes Members Club card to register online, access the full manual, quick start setup videos, firmware updates, and warranty information.
  • Stand Assembly: The stand assembly involves removing legs and cross braces from their holders, screwing legs into the frame corners (A), attaching cross braces (B) with thumbscrews (C), adjusting rear legs (D) for cross brace slotting, and extending the frame by loosening thumbscrews (E) until the square tube lines up with the arrow (F). The piano should be set onto the stand with the help of another person, ensuring the stand fits properly into the piano's base recess. Front legs can be leveled using adjustable feet.
  • Audio Connections:
    • Stereo: Connect the MK8 to a high-quality stereo amplifier, audio interface, mixing desk, or two full-range mono amps/active speakers using two 1/4 inch jack leads or two XLR leads.
    • Mono: Connect the left output jack (L/MONO) or left XLR output (L) to an amp, speaker, or audio interface.
    • Headphones: Use the built-in headphone output on the front left cheek block and adjust volume with the rotary control.
  • Powering On: Connect the mains power cord to the universal voltage power adaptor, then plug the 4-pin XLR power connector into the MK8 power input (1). Plug the mains cable into a power outlet. Flick the power switch to ON (2). It is crucial to switch the MK8 on before powering on monitoring equipment.
  • Sound Adjustment (PREAMP, VOLUME, EQ):
    • Main Volume: Set to a comfortable level.
    • EQ: Adjust LOW and HIGH dials to taste.
    • MID SWEEPS: Turn the MID GAIN dial to just over half, then slowly sweep the FREQ dial left and right to experience the unique mid filter.
    • ENVELOPE/AUTO-WAH: Set the ENVELOPE dial to full, turn MID GAIN to maximum, and set the FREQ dial to taste.
  • Pedal Connection:
    1. Place the pedal in the desired position under the piano.
    2. Insert the twist-lock connector (A) into the underside of the piano.
    3. Turn the twist-lock connector fully anticlockwise until it locks firmly.
    4. Take the knurled connector (B) and pull it upwards while screwing it anticlockwise onto the threaded push rod protruding from the piano's underside until it's fully connected.
