Do you have a question about the Ricon KlearVue DOT K Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The RICON K-Series® DOT Private Use Wheelchair Lift is a device designed to assist wheelchair occupants in entering and exiting a vehicle. This chapter of the manual provides comprehensive instructions for its safe and proper operation, including safety precautions, daily checks, control descriptions, and maintenance guidelines.

Function Description:

The K-Series® lift facilitates the movement of a wheelchair and its occupant between ground level and the vehicle floor level. It operates through a series of platform motions:

  • DEPLOY: The platform unfolds from its stowed position inside the vehicle to the floor level. If equipped with a power door operator, the vehicle doors open automatically before deployment.
  • DOWN: The platform lowers from the vehicle floor level towards the ground. The front rollstop automatically lowers (opens) when the platform reaches ground level.
  • UP: The platform rises from ground level towards the vehicle floor level. The front rollstop automatically rises (closes) when the platform leaves ground level.
  • STOW: The platform folds and retracts from the vehicle floor level to its stowed position. If equipped with a power door operator, the vehicle doors close automatically after the lift stows.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Load Capacity: The lift is designed for a maximum load of 800 lbs (364 kg). It is intended for ONE wheelchair and its occupant.
  • Controls: The lift is primarily operated via a hard-wired, hand-held remote control pendant with two rocker switches (DEPLOY, DOWN, UP, STOW buttons). An alternate control switch is located on the left side platform armrest for UP and DOWN motions by the passenger.
  • Safety Features:
    • Vehicle Interlock System: Prevents lift operation if an unsafe condition is present (e.g., transmission not in park, parking brake not set). An interlock indicator light shows its status.
    • Outer Rollstop: Prevents slow or unintentional rolling off the platform. It is not designed to stop a quickly moving wheelchair.
    • Bridgeplate Load Sensor: Detects objects on the bridgeplate and inhibits platform lowering to prevent injury or damage.
    • Threshold Warning System: Uses two light beams to detect a passenger or object in the threshold area when the platform is one inch or more below the vehicle floor. An audible buzzer is actuated to warn users.
  • Circuit Breakers:
    • Main Circuit Breaker: Located in the vehicle engine compartment, it interrupts electrical power to the lift system in case of a major short circuit. It has a "flip-down" reset tab.
    • Optional Door Operator Circuit Breaker: Located on the hydraulic pump assembly, it protects the door operator from short circuits.
    • Control System Circuit Breaker: Also on the hydraulic pump assembly, it protects the control system from short circuits.
  • Pump Solenoid LED Status Indicator: A green LED located between the 8A and 30A circuit breakers monitors the condition of the two pump solenoids, indicating when the pump is operating.
  • Manual Backup Pump: Allows for manual operation of the lift if electrical power is not functioning. It includes a pump handle to raise the platform and a pump pressure release valve to lower it.

Usage Features:

  • Level Ground Operation: The lift must always be operated with the vehicle parked on level ground to prevent hazards.
  • Parking Brake: The vehicle must be safely parked with the parking brake set before using the lift.
  • Outward Facing: Wheelchair occupants must always face outward on the platform when entering or exiting the vehicle for maximum safety and visual confirmation of platform position.
  • Wheelchair Brakes: Wheelchair brakes must be locked before moving the platform. Power chair users should turn off power and set the brake.
  • Clearance: Ensure the area around and beneath the platform is clear of obstacles and other persons during operation.
  • Bridgeplate Safety: Do not stand on the bridgeplate as the platform lowers.
  • Stowing: The platform should always be returned to its stowed position inside the vehicle after use. Ensure the platform is completely stowed before closing vehicle doors to prevent damage.
  • Manual Operation: In case of power failure, the manual backup pump can be used. Instructions include overriding the Stow-Lock, using the pump handle to raise the platform, and the release valve to lower it. Caution is advised not to over-tighten the release valve or open it more than 1/4-turn to prevent disengagement.

Maintenance Features:

  • Daily Safety Check: Before each use, inspect the lift for proper function, unusual noises or movements, vehicle interlock operation, absence of interfering objects, satisfactory general appearance, lubrication, and tight fasteners.
  • Cycle Counter: Located inside the hydraulic pump housing, it tracks the number of complete lift cycles (from vehicle floor to ground and back to floor). This count is used to schedule maintenance operations.
  • Regular Maintenance: The manual emphasizes following lubrication, cleaning, and maintenance instructions provided in a dedicated chapter to optimize the lift's operating condition.
  • Professional Repair: If any unsafe condition, unusual noises, movements, or problems with circuit breakers persist after resetting, contact a Ricon dealer or qualified service technician for repair. Do not attempt to operate a damaged or malfunctioning lift.
