the material to becleaned in ahidden or inconspicuousareafor
possible adverse reactions. Use cleaning agents sparingly. Never
discharge cleaning solutions into the waterways. Do not use
products containing phosphates, chlorine, solvents, or non‐
biodegradableorpetroleumbasedproducts.
FiberglassandGelcoat
Thehullanddeckaremadeoffiberglass.Theouterlayerofthehulland
deck is a color pigmented polyester resin, called gelcoat. Gelcoat is
highly resistant to scratches that occur during normal boat use.
Nevertheless,duringthelifeofyourboat,somedamagetothegelcoatis
boundtooccur.
GelcoatMaintenance
Toremoveandpreventthebuildupofmostsalt,soil,andgrime,cleanthe
hullanddeckregularlywithhouseholddetergentandwater.
Note:Makesurehouseholddetergentdoesnotcontainammonia or
chlorine. Because ammoniate or abrasive cleaners dull and
discolorthegelcoatsurface,theyarenotrecommendedforroutine
maintenance.
Gelcoat surfaces are very resistant to deep stains. To remove minor
stains,washtheaffectedareawithasoftclothandhousehold
detergent. Then rinse thoroughly with clear water. If deep stains do
occur,useaspecial
fi
berglasscleanerandstainremover.
Waxingthegelcoatsurfaceregularly will help prevent soiling and
preserve its luster. Robalo recommends a fiberglass wax that fills the
gelcoatpores.Chemicalsinfiberglasswaxscreenoutharmfulultraviolet
raysthatcausefadingofthegelcoatcolor.
CAUTION:Waxedgelcoatisslippery.Fallscausingbodilyinjuryorfalls
overboard are possible. Never wax deck surfaces that require sure
footing.
RepairingGelcoatDamage
MinorScratches
Repairminorscratcheswithautomotiverubbingcompoundorpolishing
wax.Followthemanufacturer’sinstructions.Althoughthescratchesmay
notdisappearcompletely,theyshouldnotbeasnoticeable.Apply
rubbing compound or polishing wax to a damp, soft cloth. Rub the
gelcoatsurfacewiththedamp,softclothinacircularmotion.
Chips,HairlineCracks,andSmallPatches
YourRobalodealerhasqualifiedpersonnelcapableofmakingthistype
ofrepair.
Robalo uses the finest gelcoats and resins available to prevent gelcoat
crazing and hairline cracks. Over time your boat may develop slight
hairline cracks in the outermost gelcoat layer. These usually do not
damagethestructureofyourboatoraffectitsintegrity.
HullBottomMaintenance
Ifyourboatwillbeinwatercontinuouslyformorethan60daysinany
90‐dayperiod,Robalorecommendssealingthehullbottomwithahigh
quality barrier coating. Failure to do so will void your hull blister
warranty. Your Robalo dealer can recommend the best barrier coating
productforyourboat.
