SAFETYEQUIPMENT
Important:Federallawrequiresyoutoprovideandmaintainsafety
equipment on your Robalo boat. As the boat owner, you are
responsibleforsupplyingallrequiredsafetyequipment.Consult your
Coast Guard, state, and local regulations to ensure your boat has all
required safety equipment on board. Additional equipment may be
recommendedforyoursafetyandthatofyourpassengers.Makeyourself
awareofitsavailabilityanduse.
PersonalFlotationDevices(PFDs)
TheremustbeoneUnitedStatesCoastGuardapprovedwearable
personal
fl
otationdeviceofTypeI,II,orIIIforeachpersononboardor
beingtowedonwaterskis,watersportstubes,kneeboards,etc.andone
TypeIVthrowabledeviceonboard.ThePFDsmustbeofasuitablesize
for each person aboard and must be in serviceable condition and
readilyaccessible.
PFD Type I, Wearable:Thisoff‐shorelifejackethasthegreatest
buoyancy. It is most effective for all waters where rescue may be
delayed.Itsdesign allows for turning most unconscious personsinthe
waterfromafacedownpositiontoaverticalorface‐upposition.
PFD Type II,Wearable: This near‐shore buoyant vest provides less
buoyancythanaTypeIPFD.Itisintendedforcalminlandwater or
waterswherethereisachanceofquickrescue.Itturnsitswearer
to aface‐up position as does the Type I PFD, but the turning action is
not as pronounced asthe Type I, and it will not turn as many persons
underthesameconditionsasaTypeI.
PFD TypeIII,Wearable: Classified as a
fl
otation aid, this PFD allows
wearerstoplacethemselvesinaverticalorface‐uppositioninthewater.
TypeIIIhasthesameminimumbuoyancyasaTypeIIPFD.Ithaslittle
or no turning ability. People participating in water sports often prefer
thisPFDbecauseitintendedforuseinwaterswherequickrescue is
possibleanditisgenerallythemostcomfortableforcontinuouswear.
PFDTypeIV,Throwable:Youmustalsohaveaboardatleastonethrow‐
ablePFDTypeIVdevice.TheTypeIVdevicecanbethrowntoapersonin
the water and grasped and held bytheuseruntilrescued.Thedesign
doesnotallowittobeworn.ThemostcommonTypeIVPFDsarebuoy‐
antcushionsorringbuoys.ThisPFDmustbeimmediatelyavailablefor
useandinserviceablecondition.
PFDTypeV:Mustbeworntobeeffective.Wheninflated,itprovides
buoyancyequivalenttoTypeI,II,orIIIPFDs.
FireExtinguishers
Astheboatowner,youareresponsibleformakingsureyouhavethe
required number of
fi
re extinguishers. Fire extinguishers must be
approvedbytheU.S.CoastGuard.
Boats longer than 26 feet and shorter than 40 feet:TwoType B‐1 or
atleast one Type B‐2 portable hand extinguishers. If your boathasa
fi
xed
fi
reextinguishingsystemapprovedbytheU.S.CoastGuard,one
TypeB‐1extinguisherisrequired.
Boats longer than 16 feet and shorter than 26 feet: At least one
portablehandTypeB‐I
fi
reextinguisher.
All
fi
re extinguishers should be mounted in a readily accessible
location away from the engine compartment. Everyone on board
should knowwherethe
fi
reextinguishersareandhowtooperatethem.
If your
fi
re extinguisher has a charge indicator gauge, cold or hot
weathermay affectthegauge reading.Consulttheinstructionmanual
supplied with the
fi
re extinguisher to determine the accuracy of the
gauge.
VisualDistressSignals
TheU.S.CoastGuardrequiresallboatsoperatingonU.S.coastalwaters
have visual distress signal equipment on board. In general, coastal
watersincludeallwatersexceptrivers,streams,andinlandlakes.The
Great Lakes are considered coastal waters as is a river mouth more
thantwomileswide.BoatsownedintheUnitedStatesandoperating
onthehighseasmustalsocarryvisualdistresssignalequipment.
