Whenloading,alwayspreparefortheprocedurepriortoreaching the
ramp.Iftherampisbusy,preparationwillshortenthetimeittakesfor
youtogetyourboatoutofthewater.
Youprobablywon’thavetobackthetrailerintothewaterasfartoload
theboatasyoudidtolaunchit.Infact,theeasiestwayistobackyour
trailerupuntiltherearofthebunksareinthewater.Bynotputtingyour
trailertoodeepinthewater,yourboatwillactuallycenteritselfonthe
bunksabout1/3to1/2thedistanceontothetrailer.
Connect the winch cable/strap to the bow eye of the boat. Lock your
winch before attempting to wind the cable/strap in. Once your boat is
alignedandispulledfirmlyagainstthewinchstandrollerorVeeblock
and
yourwinchisinthelockedposition,connecttheboatbowsafetychain
and you are ready to drive to the loading/preparation area nearthe
ramp to connect all other tie‐downs, lighting or electric brake
connections,etc.
CommonCauseofBoatMisalignment
Ifyourboatdoesn’tsitlevelinthewateroryourbunksorrollersarenot
adjustedproperly,youmayhavemisalignmentproblemswithyourboat
whenloading.Basiccorrectionproceduresareasfollows:

Re‐measureallrollerassembliesthatsetinalineacrossfromeachother.
Makesurethedistancetoeachrollerfromthecenterlineofthetraileris
equal.Inotherwords,theleftsideofyourtrailershouldbeexactlythe
sameastherightside.Thisistrueofbunkorrollertrailers.
Ifyourboatkeepsgoingtotheport(left)side,removetheboat and
loosen the U‐bolts and/or the through bolts that clamp the roller
assemblies on the stern (back) section of the trailer. Force each
assembly tothe right as if you were tryingto turn the handlebars of a
bicycle.HoldeachassemblyinthisturnedpositionandretightentheU‐
boltsand/orthroughbolts.
This repositioning of the roller assemblies should correct the
misalignmentoftheboatonyourtrailer.Ifyourboatgoestoward the
starboard(right)side,reversetheprocedure.
Another common reason for boats not centering themselves is putting
the trailer too deep in the water, which does not allow the trailer
adequatetime to centerthe boat. Thisis especially true on roller style
trailers.
Note:Makesureyourtrailerisnottoodeepinthewaterortheboat
willfloatovertherollersandbedifficulttoloadandcenter.
BoardingYourBoat
Larger pleasure boats remain stable under most operating conditions
be‐causeoftheirbeam,draft,andweightdisplacement.However, the
U.S.CoastGuarddoesrequirethatacapacityplatebeaffixedtoallboats
upto20feetlong.Thisplatestatesthemaximumloadcapacity. The
plateshowspersonsandgearinpoundstheboatwillhandlesafely
under normal conditions. The U.S. Coast Guard establishes theseload
capacity ratings. Overloading and improper distribution of weight are
significant causes of accidents. Keep weight below maximum limits for
safetyinturbulentwater.
Important: The presence of the capacity plate does not relieve the
boat operator from the responsibility of using common sense or
sound judgment. Turbulent waters and adverse weather conditions
