Overview

This document is the operating manual for the Rohde & Schwarz NRVD Power Meter, model 857.8008.02. It provides comprehensive information on the device's specifications, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description:

The NRVD Power Meter is a versatile instrument designed for high-frequency voltage and power measurements across various applications. It supports both single and dual-channel measurements, allowing for simultaneous operation with identical or different measuring heads. The device can be operated in several measurement modes, including average power (AVG), pulse modulation (PULSE), reflection (RFL), and amplitude modulation (AM). It is compatible with a range of power sensors and RF probes, such as the NRV-Z series, URVS-Z2/Z4 insertion units, and URVS-Z7 RF probe, enabling measurements across a wide frequency and dynamic range. The NRVD also supports DC voltage measurements using a DC probe (URVS-Z1).

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: NRVD (857.8008.02)
  • Input/Output Option: NRVD-B2 (0857.8908.02)
  • Power Supply: AC supply voltages of 100 V, 120 V, 220 V, 230 V, and 240 V, with frequencies between 47 Hz and 440 Hz.
  • Ambient Temperature: 0 to 50 °C.
  • Measurement Ranges (examples with various sensors):
    • Power Sensors NRV-Z...: Frequency range 0 to 26.5 GHz, Level measurement range -63 to +27 dBm, Power measurement range 0.5 nW to 0.5 W.
    • Insertion Head URVS-Z2: Frequency range 9 kHz to 2 GHz, Level measurement range -60 to +33 dBm, Power measurement range 1 nW to 2 W.
    • RF Probe URVS-Z7: Frequency range 20 kHz to 300 MHz (voltage measurement 200 µV to 10 V).
    • DC Probe URVS-Z1: Voltage measurement range ±(1 mV ... 400 V), Resolution 0.1 mV, Input impedance 9 MΩ || 3 pF.
  • Analog Outputs (with NRVD-B2 option): Two simultaneous analog outputs for channels A and B, providing DC voltages from -0.6 to 3.8 V, proportional to the displayed value. Output impedance is 1 kΩ.
  • Trigger Input (with NRVD-B2 option): External trigger input for measurement start (logic 0 V for trigger, +5 V for retaining result).
  • Ready Output (with NRVD-B2 option): Signal with valid measurement result (logic +5 V).
  • Frequency-proportional DC Voltage Input (with NRVD-B2 option): For analog frequency response correction.
  • IEC-bus Interface: Standard IEC625-1/IEEE488-1 and IEC625-2/IEEE488-2 compliant, supporting SCPI commands.
  • Test Generator: 50 MHz test generator with an output level of 1 mW.

Usage Features:

  • Initial Setup: The instrument can be operated in any position, including upright with tilt feet. It can be rack-mounted using an optional adapter. Power supply voltage is adjustable.
  • Measuring Head Connection: Measuring heads are connected via plug-in adapters. The NRVD automatically detects and reads data from connected heads. Connection/disconnection should ideally occur in manual operation.
  • Zero Adjustment: Essential for accurate measurements of very small voltages and powers.
  • Frequency Response Correction: The device allows for numerical or analog frequency response correction, either by manual entry or via a DC voltage input. It supports external numerical correction lists with up to 60 points.
  • Measurement Modes: Offers various modes for different signal types (AVG for modulated/unmodulated, PULSE for squarewave modulation, RFL for reflection, AM for amplitude modulation).
  • Display Settings: Configurable display settings including analog bargraph, numerical resolution (0.01%, 0.1%, 1% for linear; 0.001 dB, 0.01 dB, 0.1 dB for logarithmic), extreme value display (MAX, MIN, MAX-MIN), single or dual-channel readout, and display of measurement uncertainty.
  • Filtering: Automatic or manual filter selection (0 to 12 levels) to suppress display variations due to noisy signals.
  • Measurement Range Selection: Automatic (AUTO RANGE) or fixed (FIX RANGE) selection to optimize measurement accuracy.
  • Reference Value Entry: Allows storing measurement results as reference values for relative measurements (dB, P/Pr, %W, ΔW, V/Vr, %V, ΔV). Impedance, attenuation, and level reference values can be entered.
  • Special Functions: Includes setting the IEC-bus address, activating the test generator, external trigger for measurement start, analog output calibration, display illumination adjustment, front panel test, and memory protection for instrument setups.
  • Remote Control: Full functionality via IEC-bus interface, supporting SCPI commands and compatibility mode with older NRV-family commands.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: The front panel and display panel can be cleaned with a soft rag and non-alcoholic detergent.
  • Lithium Buffer Battery: A battery-backed memory preserves calibration data and setups. The battery voltage should be checked approximately every 4 to 5 years (or after recalibration) and replaced if below 3.2 V to prevent data loss.
  • Module Replacement: Detailed instructions are provided for replacing the Analog Board, Filter Board, Display Board, and I/O Option NRVD-B2. This includes steps for disassembling and reassembling components, handling cables, and ensuring proper connections.
  • Troubleshooting: A comprehensive section lists error messages (operating errors and device errors) with their causes and suggested remedies. It also describes troubleshooting procedures for common issues like power-up failures, incomplete display output, keyboard errors, and lack of IEC-bus response.
  • Self-Test: The instrument performs an automatic self-test upon power-up, checking key features and displaying error messages if faults are detected.
  • Calibration: The manual outlines procedures for checking rated specifications, including DC and AC measuring accuracy, analog outputs, DC FREQ input, EXT-TRIG input, READY output, 50-MHz test generator, and constant currents for temperature measurement. A Service Kit UZ-9 is recommended for computer-controlled testing and calibration.
