The Roland PA-120 and PA-120S are professional 8-channel public address (PA) systems designed for stage use, offering a combination of a mixing unit and a powerful amplifier. The PA-120 is the mixing amplifier unit, while the PA-120S refers to the speaker cabinets.
Function Description:
The PA-120 is an 8-channel mixing amplifier with a 120W (RMS) main amplifier. It allows for the connection of up to eight microphones or other input sources. The system is designed to be easily expandable, allowing for the connection of conventional speaker cabinets without the need for additional slave amplifiers. For larger setups, two PA-120 units can be combined to create a 16-channel system, or a second PA-120 can be used as a slave amplifier to augment the power output to 240W (RMS). The system also features reverb and echo effects, which can be independently controlled for each channel. A headphone terminal with a 3-step changeover switch (L/M/H) is included for monitoring, providing a wide dynamic range.

Usage Features:
The PA-120 is designed for ease of operation with various input/output terminals located on the rear panel. The unique attenuator with click ensures easy and precise control of volume for each channel and the master. The system allows for independent control of reverb and echo for each channel. The headphone terminal offers a 3-step changeover switch (L/M/H) for monitoring, providing a wide dynamic range. The AC OUTLET on the rear panel can power external devices like an echo chamber or tape recorder (up to 300W), and it remains operative even when the main power switch is off.
Preparation and Adjustment:
- Initial Setup: Set all knobs to 0, the stand-by switch to OFF. Connect the PA-120S speakers to the speaker terminals on the rear panel. Plug in the power cord, ensuring the power switch is OFF.
- Echo Chamber Connection: Connect the "TO ECHO" jack on the PA-120 to the INPUT of the echo chamber, and the "FROM ECHO" jack on the PA-120 to the OUTPUT of the echo chamber using connection cords.
- Microphone Connection: Connect low impedance microphones (200 ~ 600-ohm) to the MIC terminals (MIC 1 to 8 jacks).
- Power On and Volume: Turn the power switch ON; the VU meter lamp will light. Set the main volume to the 5-grade position.
- Channel Activation: Set the stand-by switch to ON for the channel connected to a microphone to activate it.
- Volume Adjustment: Adjust the volume on each channel as appropriate. When using multiple microphones, adjust the total volume using the main volume after setting individual channel volumes.
- Tone Control: Set the Treble and Bass knobs to achieve the desired tone.
- Noise Reduction: If noise or power supply hum occurs, try changing the power switch position (up or down) to find a better setting.
- Output Monitoring: The system is designed for a no-deviation maximum output of 120W R.M.S. (6 ohm load) when the VU meter pointer is at the 0 position. If the pointer deflects into the plus (red zone), reduce the volume of the channel or main volume.
- Reverb and Echo Effects: Set the reverb volume to the 5-grade position and turn the effect volume of each channel clockwise to deepen the reverberation. Adjust the total reverberation with the reverb volume. Similarly, set the echo volume to the 5-grade position and turn the effect volume of each channel clockwise to achieve the echo effect.
- Recording: When recording, connect to the LINE OUT jack.
Maintenance Features:
- Protection during Transport: When transporting the PA-120, it is crucial to cover it with the provided vinyl cover to protect the panel from damage.
- Safe Connection/Disconnection: Always set the amplifier volume to OFF before connecting or disconnecting power plugs, microphones, or echo chamber plugs. Failure to do so may result in speaker damage.
- Handling Precautions: The PA-120 is built with precision component parts, so it is important to handle the amplifier carefully and avoid any shocks or impacts.
