Downhaul Applies downwards tension to a sail
Downwind To sail in the direction that the wind is blowing
Drain Hole A hole in the hull from which trapped water can be
drained
Draught The depth of the vessel below the surface

Foils The daggerboard and the rudder
Foot The bottom edge of a sail
Fore Towards the front of the boat
Forestay The wire line that runs from the front of the mast to
the bow of the hull, holding the mast in position
Furl To gather a sail into a compact roll and bind it
against the mast or forestay
