Do you have a question about the RTK RE 3442 Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The RE 3442 is a positioner designed for the precise control of electrical actuators equipped with stroke feedback potentiometers. It functions as a transducer, converting the valve position feedback signal into a continuous output signal (typically 4-20 mA), and incorporates a comparator with a relay output and input (also typically 4-20 mA). This allows the device to compare the input signal from an external master controller with the output signal from the stroke transducer, subsequently controlling the actuator to ensure both signals are equal. While the standard configuration uses a 4-20 mA control signal, the RE 3442 can also be supplied for control signal ranges of 0-20 mA or 0-10 V DC, offering flexibility for various control systems. It's important to note that the input and output signals are not galvanically isolated.

Function Description:

The core function of the RE 3442 is to maintain a desired valve position by continuously comparing the actual valve position (sensed by the potentiometer) with the setpoint provided by an external controller. When a discrepancy is detected, the positioner sends control signals to the actuator's motor to adjust the valve position until the actual position matches the setpoint. This closed-loop control ensures accurate and stable positioning of the valve. The device is compatible with specific electrical actuators, including ST 5112, ST 5113 with AC motor, and ST 5114 with AC motor (with a special circuit configuration for ST 5114).

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Input Signal: Typically 4-20 mA, but can be configured for 0-20 mA or 0-10 V DC.
  • Output Signal: 4-20 mA (continuous).
  • Potentiometer Compatibility:
    • Total resistance of stroke feedback potentiometer: 200 to 1000 Ohm.
    • End setting of stroke feedback potentiometer: 20 Ohm (at "0" drive position).
    • Terminal resistance at maximum signal (100% drive position): Greater than 50% of total resistance.
  • Electrical Isolation: Input and output signals are not galvanically isolated.
  • Dimensions: Approximately 108mm (width) x 70mm (height) x 36mm (depth).
  • Connections:
    • Potentiometer connections: Terminals 61 (100%), 62 (slider), 63 (0%).
    • Motor control connections: Terminals K4 (motor mid-position), K5 ("open" direction), K6 ("close" direction).
    • Input/Output connections: Terminals 65, 66, 67, 68, 69 for output (0/4-20 mA, 0-10 V) and input (0/4-20 mA, GND).
    • Power connections: P, E, N, L.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The installation process involves removing the front panel, mounting the bracket, then securing the positioner and replacing the front panel. Careful attention must be paid to the correct wiring of the potentiometer and motor control lines. For actuators like ST 5114 and ST 5115, which have end position control with limit switches isolated from the motor, these must be correctly integrated into the control conductors as per the actuator's circuit diagram.
  • Commissioning: The RE 3442 is factory pre-set for "100% stroke" and "0% stroke" adjusters from the comparator, and "0% Out" from the transducer. However, the transducer must be adjusted to the specific stroke potentiometer using the "Abgl. Out" (balance out) and "100% Out" adjusters.
    • Adjustment Procedure:
      1. Apply a minimum control signal (4 mA, 0 mA, or 0 V). Once the actuator reaches the 0 position (indicated by a lit red LED and switched-off limit switch), use the "Abgl. Out" trimmer to set the output to 4 mA (+0.05 mA).
      2. Apply a maximum control signal (20 mA or 10 V). Once the actuator reaches the 100% position (indicated by a lit green LED and switched-off limit switch), use the "100% Out" trimmer to set the output to 20 mA (-0.05 mA).
  • Operational Monitoring: After commissioning, the positioner's switching behavior should be monitored. If it continuously alternates between "open" and "closed" without any change in the control signal (e.g., when the master controller is in manual mode), the "Empf." (sensitivity) adjuster should be turned left to create a wider dead band. If the positioner continually switches one or two steps open or shut when the master controller is in "automatic" mode, it indicates an unstable master controller that requires adjustment. For master controllers without a dead band, where the output signal is constantly changing, the positioner will activate at regular intervals to correct the actuator position. This scenario may lead to increased wear on both the actuator and the positioner.

Maintenance Features:

  • Screening: Proper screening for control and position indicator cables is recommended to ensure reliable operation and minimize interference.
  • Wear Considerations: Continuous switching or frequent adjustments due to an unstable master controller or lack of dead band can lead to increased wear on the actuator and the positioner. Regular monitoring of the positioner's behavior and appropriate adjustments to the master controller (if applicable) can help mitigate this.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual implies that if the positioner exhibits erratic behavior (e.g., constant switching), it may indicate an issue with the master controller's stability or the need for a wider dead band setting on the positioner itself.
