This document describes the Russell Hobbs 22851 kettle, which features an integrated BRITA® MAXTRA+ filter system. The kettle is designed for heating water while simultaneously filtering it to improve taste and reduce limescale.
The Russell Hobbs 22851 kettle is an electric water heater with a built-in BRITA® MAXTRA+ filter cartridge. The primary function of the kettle is to boil water for various household uses, such as making hot beverages or preparing food. The integrated BRITA® filter system enhances the quality of the water by reducing substances like chlorine that affect taste and odour, as well as decreasing limescale. This not only makes the water taste better but also helps prolong the life of the kettle by minimizing limescale build-up on the heating element. The kettle operates by heating water to boiling point and then automatically switching off. It includes a BRITA® Memo display that indicates the remaining life of the filter cartridge, ensuring optimal filtration performance.
The kettle is designed for ease of use and safety. It features a lid release button (3) for convenient opening and closing of the lid (2). The handle (4) provides a secure grip for pouring. The kettle sits on a stand (6) which connects to a wall socket, allowing for cordless operation of the kettle itself. The switch (5) turns the kettle on (I) and off (O). When the kettle is switched on, a light illuminates, indicating that the heating process has begun. Once the water boils, the kettle automatically switches off, and the light goes out. Users can also manually switch off the kettle by moving the switch to the 'O' position.
Filling the kettle involves opening the lid, placing the BRITA® MAXTRA+ filter cartridge (8) into the funnel (7), and then pouring water into the funnel. The funnel should be filled quickly, and refilled as it empties, until the kettle reaches the maximum fill mark. It is crucial not to overfill the kettle, as this can cause boiling water to spit out. The BRITA® Memo (1) on the lid provides a visual indication of the filter cartridge's remaining life, represented by four bars, each representing one week. A flashing dot at the bottom right of the display confirms that the Memo is working. When all four bars disappear, a flashing arrow indicates that it's time to replace the filter cartridge.
The kettle is equipped with boil dry protection. If the kettle is accidentally switched on without sufficient water, a safety cut-out device will automatically switch it off. In such an event, the kettle should be unplugged and allowed to cool down for the cut-out to reset. However, repeated boil dry incidents can shorten the life of the heating element.
The appliance is suitable for use by children aged 8 years and above, and persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, provided they are supervised or instructed on safe use and understand the hazards involved. Children should not play with the appliance. The appliance and its cable should be kept out of reach of children under 8 years. Parts of the appliance, particularly the heating element, will get hot during use and retain residual heat afterwards. The kettle should only be used with the supplied stand.
Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and optimal performance of the kettle, particularly concerning the BRITA® filter system. Before cleaning, the stand should be unplugged, and the kettle allowed to cool down. All external surfaces can be wiped with a clean, damp cloth.
The BRITA® MAXTRA+ filter cartridge requires specific preparation and replacement. Before first use, the new filter cartridge must be removed from its packaging and submerged in a bowl of cold water, then gently shaken to remove all air bubbles. It is normal to observe some black carbon particles in the packaging or water during this process, as they are harmless. After this initial preparation, the filter cartridge must be flushed by pushing it into the funnel and filling the funnel twice, discarding the water each time. After discarding two lots of water, the filter cartridge is ready for use.
The BRITA® Memo needs to be reset after a new filter cartridge is installed. This is done by pressing and holding the START button until all four bars appear and flash twice. Each week, one bar will disappear, indicating the passage of time. When the display shows only one bar, it is advisable to check for a replacement filter cartridge. When all four bars disappear, a flashing arrow will signal that it's time to replace the filter cartridge.
To remove a used filter cartridge, the lid should be opened, and the funnel held firmly with one hand while gripping the top of the filter cartridge with the other hand and pulling it up and out. The funnel itself can be removed by gently pressing one thumb against either side of it while lifting it out of the kettle.
If the kettle has not been used for a few days, it is recommended to empty and rinse it out, and to flush the filter cartridge by performing the flushing steps (points 10-13 in the manual).
For disposal, the appliance contains a battery in the BRITA® Memo, which must be removed and recycled in an environmentally friendly way. This can be done by inserting the end of a screwdriver into the notch above the Memo and prying it out of the lid. Local authorities will have arrangements for recycling or disposing of the BRITA® Memo.
In case of a damaged cable, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent, or similarly qualified persons to avoid hazards. Spillage on the stand/connector should be avoided. The appliance should not be used near bathtubs, showers, basins, or other water-containing vessels. It is intended for heating water only and should not be operated if damaged or malfunctioning.
