Overview

This document is an instruction manual for Russell Hobbs Chest Freezers, covering models RH99CF1001 (B), RH142CF2002 (B), and RH198CF3003 (B). It provides essential information for installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of these appliances.

Function Description:

The Russell Hobbs Chest Freezers are designed for storing frozen food. They utilize a natural refrigerant gas, R600a (Isobutene), as part of their cooling system, which is environmentally friendly. The freezers feature a temperature control knob to regulate the internal temperature, with settings ranging from 1 (warmest) to 6 (coldest). The standard operating temperature for the freezer compartment is between -18°C and -30°C. An indicator light signals when the freezer is switched on. The appliances are designed for domestic use and are not suitable for outdoor placement or use in the rain.

All models are intended to be used at an ambient temperature between 10°C and 43°C. The climate classes (N/SN/ST/T) indicate suitability for different ambient temperature ranges:

  • Extended temperate (SN): 10°C to 32°C
  • Temperate (N): 16°C to 32°C
  • Subtropical (ST): 16°C to 38°C
  • Tropical (T): 16°C to 43°C

The appliances are designed to operate on 220-240V AC; 50Hz and must be plugged into an earthed socket.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Before plugging in, the appliance should stand for a minimum of 3 hours to allow the coolant to settle. It should be placed on a flat, firm, and well-ventilated surface, at least 10cm away from heat sources and other appliances, and 30cm clearance above. The rear should be at least 6cm from the back wall, and 5cm from kitchen cabinets. Adjustable feet are provided for leveling.
  • Initial Setup: After positioning, the interior should be cleaned with bicarbonate of soda and warm water. The thermostat dial, located on the front face, bottom right, should be set to "3" for normal conditions. The door should remain closed for at least 4 hours after plugging in to allow the appliance to reach its operating temperature.
  • Temperature Control: The temperature is adjusted using a control knob, with '1' being the warmest and '6' the coldest setting. The 'OFF' position initiates an automatic shutdown and defrost.
  • Food Storage: Fresh food should be stored in airtight boxes or wrapped in suitable bags/foil. Pre-frozen food should be placed in the freezer quickly after purchase. Hot food should be cooled down before being placed in the freezer.
  • Power Failure: In case of a power failure, the freezer door should be kept closed. If the internal temperature rises, thawed food items like ice cream should be discarded. Soft fruits and vegetables should be cooked and used up. Bread, cakes, and large pieces of meat can be refrozen if their condition is checked. Shellfish, cooked dishes, and small joints should be refrigerated and used up quickly.
  • Energy Saving Advice: To optimize energy consumption, avoid installing the appliance near heat sources, ensure good ventilation, minimize door opening frequency and duration, keep door seals clean and intact, avoid overloading the appliance, and cool hot food before freezing.

Maintenance Features:

  • Internal Cleaning: The interior cavity should be cleaned periodically with a solution of bicarbonate of soda and lukewarm water (5ml to 0.5 litre of water). Accessories should be cleaned separately with soap and water. Abrasive products, detergents, or soaps should not be used. The appliance must be disconnected from the power supply before cleaning, and the plug reconnected with dry hands.
  • External Cleaning: The outer cabinet should be washed with warm soapy water, avoiding abrasive products. Care should be taken due to sharp edges on the underside. The rear of the appliance and the compressor should be dusted once or twice a year to prevent dust accumulation, which can affect performance and increase energy consumption.
  • Defrosting: Defrosting is recommended twice a year or when a frost layer of approximately 7mm (1/4") has formed.
    1. Six hours before defrosting, set the thermostat to "6" to ensure food is at its lowest temperature.
    2. Remove all frozen food, wrap it in newspaper, and store it in a cool place.
    3. Switch off and unplug the appliance.
    4. Remove the freezer basket and leave the lid open.
    5. Containers of warm (not hot) water can be placed inside to speed up the process. Do not use mechanical devices, electrical heaters, or hairdryers for defrosting.
    6. Once the ice has melted, drain the water by removing the plastic stopper inside the appliance and the small plastic drain cap located at the front left bottom corner on the outside. Place a container under the drain cap to collect the water.
    7. After draining, replace both stoppers and wipe up any spillages.
    8. Never use sharp metal tools as they can damage the appliance. Never use an electrical heater due to the risk of electric shock.
  • When Not in Use: For long periods of disuse, disconnect the appliance from the electricity supply, empty all food, clean the inside, and leave the door open to prevent odor build-up.

Troubleshooting:

The manual includes a troubleshooting guide for common issues:

  • Freezer not working: Check if switched on, power cut, faulty plug, blown fuse, correct voltage, or faulty socket.
  • Temperature not cold enough: Check for too much food, correct thermostat setting, direct sunlight/heating source, ambient temperature within limits, or frequent door opening.
  • Temperature too cold: Adjust thermostat to a lower setting.
  • Wet inner/outer surfaces: Caused by condensation; dry carefully.
  • Excess ice/frost: Check if door was left open or if door gasket is clean and undamaged.
  • Smell/odor: Check food packaging and expiry dates, clean up spillages on shelves and drawers.
  • Doors not closing properly: Check for obstructions, correct placement of compartments/shelves, warped/torn door seal, level appliance, and adequate spacing around the appliance.
  • Unusual noises:
    • Bubbling and gurgling: Normal sound of coolant fluid.
    • Water flowing: Normal sound of water flowing into the drain trough during defrosting.
    • Noisy compressor: Normal, indicates compressor operation; may be noisier for a short period when energized.

Safety Instructions:

The manual emphasizes several safety precautions:

  • Ensure the supply cord is not trapped or damaged during positioning.
  • Do not use multiple portable socket-outlets or power suppliers at the rear.
  • The model uses R600a (Isobutene) refrigerant, which is combustible; handle with care to avoid damaging refrigeration circuit components.
  • Do not obstruct ventilation openings.
  • Do not place or rest the appliance on its power cord.
  • Do not use mechanical devices or artificial means (e.g., heater, hair dryer) to accelerate defrosting.
  • Do not use electrical appliances inside the freezer compartment.
  • If replacing an old refrigerator with a lock, remove the lock as a safety measure.
  • Dispose of old refrigerators/freezers properly due to insulation gases and refrigerant; contact local authority or dealer.
  • Do not use adaptors or extension leads.
  • Do not plug in damaged plugs or with wet hands.
  • Do not pull, twist, or damage the power cable.
  • Children aged 8 and above, and persons with reduced capabilities, can use the appliance with supervision and instruction. Children aged 3 to 8 are allowed to load and unload. Children should not play with the appliance or hang on the door.
  • Do not place explosive or flammable material inside.
  • Bottles with high alcohol content must be sealed and placed vertically.
  • Do not cover the body or top of the appliance.
  • Fix accessories during transportation.
  • Respect food contamination instructions: avoid long door openings, clean surfaces regularly, store raw meat/fish properly, and note that one-, two-, and three-star compartments are not suitable for freezing fresh food.
  • If left empty for long periods, switch off, defrost, clean, dry, and leave the door open to prevent mold.
  • WARNING! The symbol on the rear of the appliance indicates a risk of fire due to flammable materials in refrigerant pipes and compressor. Keep away from fire sources.
