Overview

The Ryobi R18CG is a cordless caulking gun designed for various sealing and adhesive application tasks. It operates on an 18V battery system and is intended for use by individuals who have read and understood the provided instructions.

Function Description:

The primary function of the R18CG cordless caulking gun is to extrude caulk or adhesive from a standard tube, allowing users to seal cracks, fill holes, create moisture barriers, and apply adhesives. It is particularly useful for improving home energy efficiency by sealing conditioned air inside and keeping unconditioned air outside, as well as preventing insects from entering through cracks. The tool is designed to provide better control and reduce effort compared to manual caulking guns.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Voltage: 18 V
  • Discharge Rate: Variable
  • Compatible Battery Packs (not included):
    • Lithium-Ion: BPL-1820, BPL-1815, BPL18202PK, RB18L13, RB18L15, RB18L26, RB18L40, RB18LL40

Usage Features:

  • Variable Speed Selector (7): Allows the user to adjust the discharge rate of the caulk to match application needs and achieve the desired bead size.
  • Switch Trigger (5): Activates the caulking gun to extrude material.
  • Switch Lock (6): A slide switch located below the trigger that locks the switch trigger in the off-position to prevent unintentional starting, enhancing safety during transport or when not in use.
  • Plunger Rod Handle (8): Used to retract the plunger rod (2) for loading and unloading caulk tubes.
  • Puncture Tool (3): Integrated tool for breaking inner seals on caulk tubes, ensuring proper flow of material.
  • Carriage Frame (4): Holds the caulk tube (12) securely in place during operation.
  • Battery Pack (9) and Latches (10): The tool accepts Ryobi One+ 18V lithium-ion and nickel-cadmium battery packs, which are secured by latches on either side.
  • Loading Caulk:
    1. Lock the switch trigger.
    2. Cut the tip of the caulk tube spout (11) at a 45° angle, removing as little as possible to control bead size.
    3. Use the puncture tool (3) to break any inner seal at the base of the spout.
    4. Pull the plunger rod handle (8) back until the plunger base reaches the back of the carriage frame (4).
    5. Load the caulk tube (12) into the carriage frame, ensuring it is well seated at both ends.
  • Starting/Stopping:
    1. Ensure the switch lock (6) is in the unlocked position.
    2. Depress the switch trigger (5) to turn the caulk gun ON.
    3. Release the switch trigger (5) to turn the caulk gun OFF.
  • Application Technique:
    1. Set the variable speed selector (7) to match the application needs.
    2. Hold the gun at a slight angle. For cracks, insert the spout into the crack; otherwise, run the gun along the surface.
    3. Squeeze the trigger to extrude caulk.
    4. Move the gun at an even pace along the gap, ensuring full contact with application surfaces.
    5. Use a moistened finger or smoothing tool to finish the caulk bead for a clean appearance.
  • Electronic Overload Protection: The caulk gun features an electronic overload protection system that shuts down the motor if too much pressure is exerted on the tube. This prevents damage to the tool and the caulk tube. To reset, release the trigger and wait 3-5 seconds. If the motor continues to shut off, adjust the variable speed selector or check for obstructions like a blocked nozzle, damaged tube, or hardened material.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning:
    • Keep the plunger rod (2) clean and free of caulk and adhesive material. Clean any material off the plunger rod mechanism according to the caulk or adhesive manufacturer's directions.
    • Use a damp towel or rag to clean off any excess caulk from the tool.
    • Avoid using solvents on plastic parts, as they can cause damage. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, and grease.
  • General Maintenance:
    • Regularly check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation.
    • Ensure cutting tools (like the utility knife used for cutting the spout) are sharp and clean.
    • Only parts shown on the parts list are intended for customer repair or replacement; all other parts should be replaced at an Authorized Service Center.
  • Safety during Maintenance: Always remove the battery pack (9) from the tool before cleaning or performing any maintenance to prevent accidental starting. Wear safety goggles or glasses with side shields, and a dust mask if operations are dusty.
