Function Description:

The primary function of the Ryobi TUFF SUCKER™ is to provide convenient and efficient clean-up for both dry debris and liquid spills. It operates on an 18-volt battery pack, making it a portable solution for various cleaning tasks. The hand vac is equipped with a removable battery pack and a charger, ensuring it is always ready for use. Its design allows for easy attachment and removal of specialized tools to enhance its cleaning capabilities for different surfaces and types of messes.

  • Switch: On/Off
  • Charger Item No.: 1423701
  • Battery Item No.: 1322401, 130224007, or 130256001
  • Charger Rating: 120V, 60 Hz, AC Only
  • Charger Voltage: 18 Volt
  • Charger Rate: 1 Hour (for normal usage to fully charge a completely discharged tool, with a minimum charge time of 1 to 1-1/2 hours)
  • Battery Type: Nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries (Ni-Cd)
  • Operating Temperature for Charging: 50°F to 100°F (recommended)

Usage Features:

  • Portability: Being an 18-volt cordless hand vac, it offers excellent portability, allowing users to clean without being tethered to a power outlet.
  • Wet and Dry Vacuuming: The TUFF SUCKER™ is specifically designed to handle both dry debris and liquid spills, making it a versatile cleaning tool.
  • ON/OFF Switch: A conveniently located ON/OFF switch on top of the handle allows for easy operation while holding the handle. To turn on, slide the switch toward the front; to turn off, slide it toward the back.
  • Battery Pack System: The hand vac utilizes a removable battery pack. To install, align the raised rib on the battery pack with the groove in the hand vac's battery port and ensure the latches snap into place. To remove, depress both latches on the side of the battery pack.
  • Charging Indicator: The charger features LED lights to indicate the charging status:
    • Red LED lighted: Fast Charging Mode
    • Green LED lighted: Fully Charged Battery Pack
    • Yellow and Green LED Lighted: Control Charge or Possible Faulty Battery
    • Normally, the yellow and green lights come on, indicating control charge mode, then switch to red for fast charge mode. When fully charged, the red light turns off, and the green light turns on.
  • Full Line Indicator for Liquids: When vacuuming liquids, a "full line" icon on the dust bowl serves as an indicator for the maximum liquid level. Users should empty the dust bowl before liquid fills past this line to avoid issues. The hand vac should not be tilted when containing liquids.
  • Attachments: The hand vac comes with several attachments to enhance its utility:
    • Brush Attachment: Ideal for vacuuming upholstery, drapes, and other fabric surfaces. It snaps into the front end of the vacuum.
    • Crevice Tool: Designed for reaching and vacuuming in tight, narrow spaces. It also snaps into the front end of the vacuum.
    • Squeegee Attachment: A convenient tool for wet pick-up, helping to collect liquids and improve the efficiency of spill removal. It snaps into the front end of the vacuum.
  • Dust Bowl: The transparent dust bowl allows users to see when it needs to be emptied. It is easily removed by depressing the release button on top of the hand vac and pulling the dust bowl down and out.
  • Filter System: The hand vac includes a filter and filter rack. The filter is locked into the filter rack and can be twisted to unlock and remove. The filter, filter rack, and dust bowl should be cleaned periodically for maximum dust collection.

Maintenance Features:

  • Dust Bowl and Filter Cleaning: For optimal performance, the dust bowl and filter should be checked, emptied, and cleaned periodically. After removing the dust bowl, the filter and filter rack can be pulled out. The filter can be shaken or lightly brushed to remove dust and dirt. All pieces (filter, filter rack, and dust bowl) can be washed if necessary, but must be completely dry before reattaching to the hand vac.
  • Filter Replacement: To replace the filter, align its slots with the tabs on the filter rack, ensuring the arrow on the filter points up, then twist to lock it in place. The assembled filter rack and filter are then placed back into the dust bowl.
  • Reattaching Dust Bowl: Position the dust bowl and motor housing sections, aligning the slots on the bottom of the dust bowl with the tabs on the bottom of the motor housing, then snap the two sections together.
  • Battery Care:
    • Store and charge batteries in a location where the temperature is between 50°F and 100°F.
    • Never store batteries in a discharged condition; recharge them immediately after use.
    • For long-term storage, recharge the battery pack every month or two to prolong battery life, as batteries gradually lose their charge, especially at higher temperatures.
    • If the battery pack becomes hot from continuous use, allow it to cool down for approximately 30 minutes before recharging.
    • Do not attempt to disassemble or replace the nickel-cadmium batteries within the battery pack.
  • Disposal of Exhausted Battery: The product contains nickel-cadmium batteries, which must be disposed of properly. Users are advised to consult local waste authorities for recycling options or call 1-800-8BATTERY. Upon removal, battery pack terminals should be covered with heavy-duty adhesive tape to prevent short circuits.
  • General Cleaning: Avoid using solvents on plastic parts, as many plastics are susceptible to damage from commercial solvents. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, and grease.
  • Service and Repairs: Any repairs requiring disassembly should only be performed by a Ryobi Authorized Service Center. For service or repair, contact Ryobi at 1-800-525-2579 or visit www.ryobitools.com. When ordering repair parts, always provide the model number (VC180) and serial number. Only identical Ryobi replacement parts should be used to avoid hazards or product damage.

Safety Precautions:

The manual emphasizes several critical safety warnings:

  • Always read and understand all instructions before using the hand vac to prevent electric shock, fire, or serious personal injury.
  • Do not allow children to operate or play with the hand vac.
  • Use the hand vac ONLY for its intended indoor use and for wet pick-up as described in the manual, using only recommended attachments.
  • Avoid charging outdoors or on wet surfaces to prevent electric shock.
  • Do not use the charger with a damaged cord or plug.
  • Do not abuse the cord; keep it away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts.
  • Do not handle the charger or hand vac with wet hands.
  • Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers, and all body parts away from openings and moving parts.
  • Never vacuum hot coals, cigarette butts, matches, or flammable/combustible liquids like gasoline.
  • Always ensure the dust bowl and filter are in place before use.
  • Turn off all controls before unplugging or plugging into an electrical outlet for charging.
  • Use extra care when cleaning on stairs.
  • Do not pick up hard objects like nails, screws, or coins, as this can cause damage or injury.
  • Use only the charger provided with the hand vac; substituting another charger can cause batteries to explode.
  • Do not place the hand vac near fire or heat.
  • Do not charge the hand vac in damp or wet locations.
  • In case of battery leakage, wash skin immediately with soap and water, then neutralize with lemon juice or vinegar. If liquid gets into eyes, flush with clean water for at least 10 minutes and seek medical attention.
  • Do not modify the tool or create accessories not recommended for use with this tool.
  • Do not disassemble the charger; take it to a qualified serviceman for repair.
  • Unplug the charger from the outlet before maintenance or cleaning.
  • Do not touch uninsulated portions of the output connector or battery terminal to avoid electric shock.
  • When disposing of the battery pack, cover the terminals with heavy-duty adhesive tape and do not attempt to destroy or disassemble it. Keep away from children.
