25:00DRAINAGESYSTEMANDSEACOCKS
Seacockshaveproventheirdependabilityasareliablemeansofcontrolledaccessthrough
thehullforthedisposalandintakeofliquids.Theyarethesinglemostimportant
mechanicaldeviceresponsibleforthewatertightintegrityofthehull.
Theseacockvalveisopenwhenthehandleisperpendiculartothehullandclosedwhenthe
handleisturnedonequarterturntobeparalleltothehull.(RefertoI07andI10)
25:01SEACOCKS
:Allseacocksshouldbecheckedeachtimetheboatisused.Closeall
seacocksbeforeleavingtheboat,withtheexceptionofcockpitdrainseacocks.
Topreventcorrosionfromforming,andtoinsurethattheyareoperatingcorrectly,
cockpitdrainseacocksshouldbeexercisedfrequently.
Closingseacockswhiletheboatisinthewaterwilltrapwaterinsidetheseacockwhich
hasthepotentialtofreezeanddamagethesystem.Besureallseacocksareproperly
drainedbeforewinterstorage.
Eachyearwhentheboatishauled,eachseacockshouldbedisassembled,cleanedand
lubricatedwithqualitywaterpumpgrease.Disassembletheseacockbyremovingthelock
nutandthentheretainingnutwhichsecuresanendplate.Thetaperedcylindercanthen
beremovedfromtheoppositeendofthehousing.
Cleanofftheremainingoldgreaseinsidethehousingandthetaperedshaft.Replaceold
greasewithagenerousapplicationofnewgreaseandreassemble.Tightenendplatesnug
enoughtopreventanyleakingandlooseenoughtoallowcomfortably,yetsnug,operation.
Inspectthebondingwireconnectiononeachseacockforcorrosionandtightness.Leave
cockpitdrainseacocksopenduringwinterstoragetoallowthecockpittodrainandclose
allothersafterdraining.
Beawareoftheimportanceofopeningtheappropriateseacockforthesysteminuseto
allowsafeoperation.Thisisespeciallytruewiththeenginecoolingsystemandhead
disposalsystem.Sinkdrainsarealsoprotectedbyseacocks,whichmustbeopenedwhen
theyareinuse.

Thediaphragmtypepumpremoveswaterfromthebilge,pumpingitoverboardatthe
transom.Astrainerattheendofthereinforcedbilgehoseprotectsthepumpfrom
