Overview

The SaeboMAS mini is a lightweight, zero-gravity, dynamic mobile arm support system designed to assist individuals with weakened shoulder and elbow during functional tasks. This compact device is specifically engineered for clients suffering from neurological and orthopedic conditions, helping to improve shoulder and elbow weakness. It provides an ideal home program solution to enhance strength, motor recovery, and independence. Clients can achieve greater ease and minimal compensation, allowing for enhanced independence in self-care, leisure, or occupational tasks such as using a computer, eating, drinking, or grooming.

Function Description:

The SaeboMAS mini utilizes a tension system based on the functional goals of the user. Its adjustable spring-based parallelogram provides precise customization for assistance or resistance. Users can either increase or decrease the extra assistance required for functional tasks or less assistance to further challenge their strength during exercise. The proprietary tension system is fully adjustable, allowing for a wide range of motion and tailored support.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Device Type: Lightweight, zero-gravity, dynamic mobile arm support.
  • Adjustability: Features a Tension Adjustable Handle and a Tension Indication Knob for precise control over assistance/resistance.
  • Mounting: Designed to be mounted to a sturdy table. The device should not be mounted to unstable surfaces or tables on wheels.
  • Table Mount: The table mount can be positioned approximately 2 feet away from the user's side. It accommodates table surfaces between 2-3 inches (5-7.5cm) thick and requires a sufficient surface area for secure mounting.
  • Height Adjustment: Includes a Height Adjustable Knob to set the vertical position of the mount.
  • Forearm Support: Comes with 2 Forearm Supports (1 Small, 1 Medium/Large) that attach to the device. These supports can be adjusted for position and angle.
  • Elbow Support: An optional elbow support can be used to prevent elbow extension beyond a desired range.
  • Swivel Stop: Prevents rotation or turning of the SaeboMAS mini when not in use.

Usage Features:

  • Installation:
    • Table Mount: Position the table mount on the side approximately 2 feet away from the user. Ensure the table surface is 2-3 inches thick and provides sufficient area. Secure the table mount by rotating the handle clockwise.
    • Mount Opening: Unclip the horizontal bar from the frame to begin treatment.
    • Height Adjustment: Rotate the Height Adjustable Knob to set the vertical position of the mount.
  • Forearm Support:
    • The SaeboMAS mini includes two forearm supports (Small, Medium/Large).
    • To replace the forearm supports, loosen the knobs under the forearm support base and remove the current support. Replace with the desired support and re-secure.
    • The forearm support can be adjusted for pronation/supination (vertically up/down) and horizontally (swivel vertically/up and down) to optimize forearm support in an unlocked position.
    • To lock the forearm support, rotate the knob in a clockwise direction until it threads the hole on the forearm support. To unlock, rotate the knob in a counter-clockwise direction.
  • Elbow Support:
    • The elbow support is recommended for activities that incorporate hand-to-mouth movements (e.g., feeding, grooming) to prevent the forearm support from migrating distally (slip downwards) towards the wrist.
    • To attach the elbow support, loosen the Elbow Support Base Knobs. Thread the Elbow Support into the opening on the right side. Re-tighten the knobs to secure the Elbow Support to the Elbow Support Base.
  • Wrist Support:
    • The Wrist Support is ideal for patients exhibiting "wrist drop." To attach, loosen the Forearm Support Base Knobs and thread the Wrist Support into the opening. Re-tighten the knobs to secure the Wrist Support to the Forearm Support.
  • Tension Adjustments:
    • The SaeboMAS mini includes a Tension Scale to identify and track the amount of support needed for the affected arm.
    • Increase Tension/Support: Rotate the Tension Adjustment Handle in a clockwise direction.
    • Decrease Tension/Support: Rotate the Tension Adjustment Handle in a counter-clockwise direction.
    • To avoid damage, ensure the desired tension is reached before moving the Tension Adjustment Handle away from the frame.
  • Swivel Stop:
    • The Swivel Stop prevents rotation or turning of the SaeboMAS mini when not in use.
    • To avoid rotation, tighten the Swivel Stop Knob in a clockwise direction. The SaeboMAS mini will not move freely when the Swivel Stop Knob is tightened.
    • Important: Be sure to loosen the Swivel Stop Knob prior to use to avoid damage.
  • Seated Position: The user should be positioned side-by-side (approximately 2 feet or 60cm away) from the SaeboMAS mini.
  • Incorporating SaeboFlex® and SaeboGlove®: The SaeboMAS mini can be conveniently combined with other orthoses such as the SaeboFlex and SaeboGlove.
    • Option #1 (Distal): Position the SaeboFlex or SaeboGlove just distal (i.e., below) to the SaeboMAS mini Forearm Support. Secure the SaeboMAS mini Forearm Support Strap to the arm just proximal (i.e., above) to the SaeboFlex or SaeboGlove.
    • Option #2 (Proximal): Position the SaeboFlex or SaeboGlove on top of the SaeboMAS mini Forearm Support. Secure the SaeboMAS mini Forearm Support Strap around the proximal portion of the orthosis.
    • Option #3 (Fingers and Thumb): For the SaeboFlex, consider threading the strap under the bead lines for the fingers and thumb.

Maintenance Features:

  • Tension System: The proprietary tension system is fully adjustable, allowing for easy customization and maintenance of desired resistance/assistance levels.
  • Troubleshooting Tips:
    • Decreased Wrist Extension Strength: Apply a wrist brace for added support.
    • Increased Tone at Elbow Flexors/Difficulty Performing Movements Requiring Elbow Extension: Maximize the extension at the elbow. Consider the following strategies:
      • Electrical stimulation on the triceps.
      • Elbow air splint.
      • Manual facilitation.
      • EMG/biofeedback.
    • Elbow Flexion Activities/Elbow Shift/Migrate While Using Elbow Stop: Consider securing the elbow to the Elbow Support by using a Velcro strap.

Precautions:

  • To decrease the risk of bodily injury, lower the Tension Indication Knob completely until a stop (knob parallel with bottom arrow) prior to opening or closing the SaeboMAS mini (clipping or unclipping).
  • The SaeboMAS mini must be mounted to a sturdy table. Do not mount to unstable surfaces or tables on wheels.
  • Do not perform hand-to-mouth activities without the Elbow Support. The Elbow Support must be attached.
  • Without the Elbow Support attached, the Forearm Support may migrate distally (i.e., slip downwards) towards the wrist. In some cases, the Forearm Support may slip completely off the arm.
  • For some individuals, the Forearm Support may migrate distally (i.e., slip downwards) toward the wrist during use. Add non-slip material, such as a waffled shelf liner, to minimize migration.
  • To decrease the risk of bodily injury, make sure the tension is lowered completely before opening/closing the SaeboMAS mini.
  • What height should the SaeboMAS mini be positioned? The Tension Adjustment Handle of the SaeboMAS mini should be positioned at shoulder height of the user.
  • Reminder: The Forearm Supports are malleable and can be shaped for an intimate fit.
  • Important: What is the Elbow Support and when should I use it? It is highly recommended that the elbow support be used for any activities involving elbow flexion.
  • Important: Do not use the Elbow Support for tasks that require elbow extension.
  • Important: How much support should be provided? Each individual will require a customized program based on their motor impairments. There should be enough support provided to successfully complete the functional task. At the same time, the support should be limited to challenge the user. Finding a balance between too much support and too little will be important.
  • Important: Be sure to loosen the Swivel Stop Knob prior to use to avoid damage.
