Overview

The Sage Tea Maker™ (BTM800) is a sophisticated appliance designed for heating and boiling quality drinking water and brewing tea. It combines the functionality of a variable temperature kettle with a precise tea brewing system, allowing users to customize their hot beverages.

Function Description

The primary function of the Tea Maker™ is to heat water to specific temperatures and to brew various types of tea with controlled strength and duration. It features a power base with an integrated heating element and a glass jug that houses a stainless steel tea basket. The appliance is designed to handle different tea types—Green, White, Oolong, Herbal, and Black—each with preset brewing temperatures and times, ensuring optimal flavor extraction.

For water heating, the device can boil water to 100°C or heat it to a customized temperature. When used as a tea maker, the tea basket automatically lowers into the heated water at the selected brew temperature and rises once the brewing cycle is complete. This automated process ensures consistent brewing results.

A "Keep Warm" feature allows the brewed tea or heated water to remain warm for up to 60 minutes. The "Basket Cycle" feature continuously auto-lifts and lowers the basket during the tea brewing cycle, promoting thorough infusion.

The "Auto Start" feature enables users to program a specific time for the appliance to begin either a tea brewing cycle or a water heating cycle, offering convenience for morning routines or scheduled tea times.

Usage Features

The Tea Maker™ is operated via a control panel on the power base, featuring a backlit LCD screen that displays temperature, brew time, and other settings.

  • Setting Temperature: Users can adjust the water heating temperature using variable temperature controls, with preset options for different tea types or manual adjustment in 1-degree increments.
  • Selecting Tea Type: A dedicated "TEA TYPE" button allows users to toggle through Green, White, Oolong, Herbal, and Black tea presets, which automatically set the recommended brew temperature and time.
  • Selecting Tea Strength: The "TEA STRENGTH" button allows users to choose between Strong, Medium, Mild, or Custom strengths, which in turn adjusts the brew time.
  • Brewing Tea: After filling the glass jug with water and the tea basket with tea leaves (using the provided scoop for measurement), users select their desired tea type and strength, then press the "TEA/Cancel" button to start. The basket automatically lowers and rises, indicating brewing progress on the LCD.
  • Heating Water: To heat water, users fill the jug, select the desired temperature (or 100°C for boiling), and press the "HOT WATER/Cancel" button.
  • Keep Warm Function: This feature can be activated before, during, or after a cycle by pressing the "KEEP WARM" button. It automatically switches off if the jug is removed from the power base.
  • Basket Cycle: Pressing the "BASKET" button activates a continuous up-and-down movement of the tea basket during brewing for enhanced infusion.
  • Customizing Brew Time: Brew times can be adjusted using variable time controls, with manual mode available for brew times over 10 minutes.
  • Auto Start: To use this feature, users set the current time and a desired start time, then select whether to start a tea brewing or water heating cycle. The appliance will then begin the selected function at the programmed time.

Maintenance Features

Regular cleaning and descaling are essential to maintain the performance and longevity of the Tea Maker™.

  • Glass Jug Cleaning: After each use, the glass jug should be emptied. For daily cleaning, wipe the interior with a soft damp sponge or rinse with warm water. If used only for tea, soapy water is not recommended to preserve the tea flavor. For tannin build-up, fill the jug to the maximum water mark, boil, let cool for one minute, add a tea cleaner packet, let stand for 5 minutes, empty, refill with fresh water, boil again, empty, and rinse thoroughly. The exterior can be wiped with a soft damp cloth.
  • Jug Lid and Integrated Scale Filter Cleaning: The jug lid can be washed in warm soapy water with a soft sponge, rinsed, and dried. The integrated scale filter can be cleaned under running hot water with a cleaning cloth or brush. Alternatively, the jug lid is dishwasher safe and should be positioned vertically for proper drainage.
  • Tea Basket Lid, Tea Basket, and Tea Scoop Cleaning: These components should be washed in warm soapy water with a soft sponge, rinsed, and dried. A non-abrasive liquid cleanser or mild spray solution can be used to prevent stains, applied to the sponge, not directly to the accessories. These accessories are also dishwasher safe.
  • Power Base Cleaning: The power base should be wiped with a soft damp sponge. All surfaces must be thoroughly dry before plugging the appliance back into a wall outlet.
  • Descaling: To remove scale build-up, Sage® "The Descaler" is recommended. One sachet (25g) should be dissolved in 1 liter of warm water and poured into the tea maker. After standing for 5 minutes, the solution should be discarded, and the tea maker rinsed twice with fresh clean water.
  • Cooling Down: All parts of the Tea Maker™ should be allowed to cool completely before disassembling and cleaning.
  • Storage: Before storing, ensure the appliance is switched off, cleaned, and dried. The assembled tea basket should be securely attached to the magnetic post within the glass jug, and the jug lid securely in place. The power cord can be wrapped around the storage under the power base. The Tea Maker™ should be stored upright on its power base, with nothing stored on top.
