If you smell gas, it could be due to a few reasons. First, ensure that all surface burner knobs are in the OFF position. If a burner knob isn't completely off, gas may be released. If all knobs are off and you still smell gas, there may be a gas leak. In this case, immediately evacuate the area and call your gas supplier from a neighbor's phone. Do not use your own phone as it could create a spark. Follow the gas supplier's instructions. If you cannot reach them, contact the fire department.
