Overview

This document describes the SAUTER FK series of digital push-pull gauges, designed for precise force measurement.

Function Description

The SAUTER FK is a force gauge used to determine the measuring value of a material. It operates as a "non-automatic" instrument, requiring manual and careful attachment of the material to be measured. The measuring value is read after a stable measurement is obtained. The device features a "Sensor Inside" design, meaning the measuring cell is integrated within the housing.

The instrument offers two primary measurement modes:

  • Track Mode: This mode provides a continuous display of the force in a defined direction. It is suitable for real-time monitoring of force application.
  • Peak-Hold Function (Peak Mode): This function captures and displays the maximum value recorded during a measurement. It is useful for determining the peak force applied or experienced.

The display automatically rotates when the instrument is turned upside down, ensuring readability regardless of orientation.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Accuracy: ± 0.5% of Capacity. This indicates a high level of precision for the measurements.
  • Data Sampling Rate: 1,000 Hz. A high sampling rate allows for accurate capture of rapidly changing forces.
  • Operating Conditions:
    • Temperature: 10°C to 30°C
    • Humidity: 15% up to 80%
  • Power Supply:
    • The device can be powered either by a rechargeable battery pack or directly via a current power supply using a power adapter.
    • When connected to the power adapter, rechargeable batteries are charged simultaneously.
    • Rechargeable Battery Pack: Consists of 6 AA-size batteries.
    • Charging Time: Approximately 1 hour.
  • Measurement Units: The device supports multiple units, including Newtons (N), kilograms (kg), pounds (lb), and ounces (oz).
  • Models and Capacities:
    • FK 10: 10 N capacity, 0.005 N resolution
    • FK 25: 20 N capacity, 0.010 N resolution
    • FK 50: 50 N capacity, 0.020 N resolution
    • FK 100: 100 N capacity, 0.050 N resolution
    • FK 250: 200 N capacity, 0.100 N resolution
    • FK 500: 500 N capacity, 0.20 N resolution
    • FK 1k: 1000 N capacity, 0.50 N resolution
  • Dimensions:
    • Overall Length: 195 mm
    • Width (at force sensor): 83 mm
  • Fixing: The device can be fixed to a test stand using 4 x M3 screws, with specific dimensions provided for mounting (58.0 mm x 16.9 mm spacing).

Usage Features

  • Display: The LCD shows the measuring result, measuring units, measuring direction, and an indication of Peak Mode.
  • Operating Keys:
    • ON/OFF Key: Powers the device on (press for 1 second) and off.
    • MAX Key: Toggles between Track and Peak modes to capture maximum values.
    • UNIT Key: A short press allows selection of the desired measurement unit (N, kg, lb, or oz).
    • ZERO Key:
      • In Track mode, it zeros the measuring result (Tara function).
      • In Peak mode, it clears the peak value.
  • Standard Attachments: The device comes with standard attachments for various measurement applications.
  • CE Declaration of Conformity: The device complies with EU Directive 89/336EEC EMC and standards EN 61326: 1998 +A1:1998 +A2:2001, ensuring it meets European safety and environmental requirements.

Maintenance Features

  • Quality Assurance: The metrology features and any available adjusting weight must be checked at regular intervals as part of quality assurance. The user is responsible for defining a suitable interval and scope for these checks. Information regarding monitoring test substances and test weights is available on the KERN-sohn.com homepage.
  • Calibration: Test weights and instruments can be adjusted quickly and affordably in KERN's accredited DKD calibration laboratory.

Safety Information

  • Intended Use: The instrument is designed for non-automatic, static force measurement. It is not suitable for dynamic measurements or for measuring small quantities where "stability compensation" could lead to incorrect results (e.g., slow draining of liquid from a suspended container).
  • Prohibited Actions:
    • Do not attach a continuous load, as this can damage the measuring unit.
    • Prevent jolts, torsion, and oscillation.
    • Do not overload the instrument beyond its stated maximum load (max.), considering any tare weight. Overloading risks breakage.
    • Do not use the hanging instrument to transport loads.
    • Do not use the instrument over the maximum permitted weight.
    • Ensure no people or materials below the load could be injured or damaged.
    • The instrument is not suitable for measuring people or as baby scales.
    • It does not comply with the medical product law (MPG).
    • Do not operate in hazardous locations; the series design is not explosion-proof.
    • Do not make structural alterations to the instrument, as this can lead to incorrect measurements, safety regulation faults, or device destruction.
  • Approved Use: The instrument must only be used in compliance with the described guidelines. Any varying areas of application or planned use must be approved by SAUTER in writing.
  • Guarantee: The guarantee is void if guidelines in the operating instructions are not observed, if the device is used outside described applications, altered or opened, subjected to mechanical damage, damage from media/liquids, natural wear and tear, inappropriate erection or electrical installation, or overloading of the measuring equipment.
  • Staff Training: The device should only be operated and maintained by trained personnel.
  • Read Instructions: Always read the operating instructions carefully before erecting and commissioning the device, even if familiar with SAUTER instruments.
