Overview

The Modi Multibit is a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) designed to transform digital audio signals into analog sound. Drawing inspiration from Norse mythology, where Modi is one of Thor's sons, this device is presented as one of Schiit's "Modis," a nod to its lineage within the brand's product family. It shares similarities with the Bifrost Multibit but distinguishes itself by offering a straightforward, non-upgradable design, simplifying the user experience. The device incorporates a "Comboburrito filter" and an AD5547 DAC, aiming to deliver a specific audio signature.

Function Description

At its core, the Modi Multibit serves as an intermediary between your digital audio sources and your analog amplification system. It takes digital audio inputs—via USB, optical, or coaxial connections—and converts them into a stereo analog output that can be fed into an amplifier, preamplifier, or receiver. This conversion process is crucial for systems that require an analog signal for playback, allowing users to enjoy digital music files through traditional audio setups. The device is designed to be a dedicated DAC, focusing solely on the conversion task without additional features like amplification or streaming. Its active output stage is engineered to drive long cables with ease, providing flexibility in system placement.

Usage Features

The Modi Multibit prioritizes simplicity and ease of use, making it accessible for a wide range of audio enthusiasts.

  • Connections: The rear panel of the Modi Multibit offers a comprehensive set of input and output options:

    • Power Input (16VAC): The device is powered by a supplied 16VAC wall-wart. It is crucial to use only the provided power adapter to ensure proper operation and prevent damage.
    • USB Input: Connect your computer or other USB audio source using a USB 2.0-rated cable, with a recommended length of 2 meters or less. For Windows users, specific drivers may need to be installed, which can be found on schiit.com/drivers. Mac users typically do not require additional drivers. Once connected, the Modi Multibit needs to be selected as the audio output device in your operating system's sound settings (Control Panel for Windows, System Preferences for Mac) and within your music player software.
    • Optical Input: For optical digital sources, a good Toslink cable, 3 meters or less in length, should be used to connect to the optical input jack.
    • Coaxial Input: A coaxial digital source can be connected to the coax input jack using an RCA cable, with a 75-ohm cable being preferred for optimal performance.
    • Analog Outputs (RCA L/R): The converted analog signal is output through two RCA jacks, labeled "R" (right) and "L" (left). These connect to your amplifier, preamplifier, or receiver. The active output stage of the Modi Multibit allows for the use of long cables without significant signal degradation.
    • Power Switch: A simple power switch allows you to turn the device on and off.
  • Controls: The front panel features a single button and three indicator lights, simplifying interaction with the device.

    • Input Cycle Button: Pressing this button cycles through the three available digital inputs: USB, optical, and coaxial. This allows users to easily switch between different audio sources.
    • USB Input Indicator Light: This light illuminates when the USB source is selected. If no USB source is connected, the Modi Multibit will automatically skip this input when cycling.
    • Optical Input Indicator Light: This light indicates that the optical source is currently selected.
    • Coaxial Input Indicator Light: This light illuminates when the coaxial digital source is selected.
  • Startup Sequence: Upon initial power-on, the Modi Multibit performs a brief startup routine. All three input indicator lights (USB, optical, and coaxial) will flash in sequence for approximately 20 seconds. This flashing period is a protective measure designed to prevent any audible thumps, bumps, or other unusual noises during the device's initialization. Once the lights cease flashing, the Modi Multibit is ready for use, and you can begin enjoying your music.

The design philosophy emphasizes a "really simple device," aiming to provide a hassle-free listening experience without the complexities often associated with more feature-rich audio equipment.

Maintenance Features

The Modi Multibit is designed with minimal user maintenance in mind, focusing on reliability and a "set it and forget it" approach.

  • No User Serviceable Parts: The internal components of the Modi Multibit are not intended for user access or servicing. The device is sealed, and any attempt to open it would likely void the warranty. This design choice ensures the integrity of the internal circuitry and prevents accidental damage.
  • Warranty: The product comes with a 2-year limited warranty, covering defects in material and workmanship from the date of purchase. This warranty provides peace of mind, ensuring that any manufacturing faults will be addressed by Schiit Audio.
    • Warranty Service: If warranty service is required, users are instructed to contact Schiit Audio first to obtain a Return Authorization (RA) before sending the product back. Products sent without an RA will be returned to the sender without repair.
    • Warranty Limitations: The warranty does not cover damage resulting from modification, tampering, negligence, accident, unreasonable use, or other causes unrelated to defective materials or workmanship. It also becomes void if the serial number has been altered or removed.
  • Cleaning: While not explicitly detailed in the manual, general care for electronic devices typically involves keeping them free from dust and debris. A soft, dry cloth can be used for external cleaning. Avoid using liquid cleaners or abrasive materials, as these could damage the finish or internal components.
  • Power Adapter: The instruction to use only the supplied 16VAC wall-wart is a critical maintenance point. Using an incorrect power adapter can lead to improper operation, damage to the device, or even safety hazards.
  • Cable Quality: While not a maintenance item for the device itself, the recommendation for good quality, appropriately rated cables (USB 2.0, good Toslink, 75-ohm RCA) contributes to the overall performance and longevity of the audio system, indirectly supporting the Modi Multibit's intended function.

In essence, the Modi Multibit is presented as a robust and straightforward DAC that requires little ongoing user intervention beyond initial setup and proper handling. Its design philosophy prioritizes a direct path to high-quality audio conversion, minimizing complexity and maximizing user enjoyment.
