This document is the Product Manual for the Seagate Video 2.5 HDD, a hard disk drive designed for consumer electronics environments.
Function Description
The Seagate Video 2.5 HDD is a hard disk drive that utilizes the Serial ATA (SATA) interface for data transfers. It supports various ATA programmed input/output (PIO) modes (0-4), multiword DMA modes (0-2), and Ultra DMA modes (0-6). The drive also incorporates the IORDY signal for reliable high-speed data transfers. It is designed to be hot-pluggable, allowing for connection and disconnection while the system is running, though a COMRESET from the host is required after a hotplug event. The drive offers programmable power management modes to enhance energy efficiency.

Usage Features
Configuring and Mounting:
- Serial ATA Interface: The drive connects in a point-to-point configuration with the Serial ATA host adapter. Each drive is considered a master, even if two drives are attached to one host adapter, they appear as Device 0 (master) on separate ports.
- Cabling: Uses a Serial ATA interface cable with four conductors in two differential pairs and three ground connections. The cable can be up to one meter long. Latching SATA connectors are supported.
- Mounting: Users can mount the drive in any orientation using four screws in the side-mounting holes or four screws in the bottom-mounting holes. A minimum clearance of 0.030 in (0.76 mm) around the entire perimeter of the drive is required for cooling. Only M3 x 0.5-6H mounting screws should be used, with a maximum torque of 4.0 in-lb (0.4519 N-m).
- Hot-Plug Compatibility: The drive supports hot-plugging, but requires a COMRESET from the host after such an event.
Power Management Modes:
The drive offers programmable power management to optimize energy efficiency.
- Active (operating): Heads are tracking, spindle is rotating, full power.
- Idle, performance: Heads are tracking, spindle is rotating, partial power.
- Idle, active: Heads are floating, spindle is rotating, partial power.
- Idle, low power: Heads are parked, spindle is rotating, partial power.
- Standby: Heads are parked, spindle is stopped, low power. The drive enters Standby mode via a Standby Immediate command or automatically after a specified inactivity period.
- Sleep: Heads are parked, spindle is stopped, low power. The drive enters Sleep mode after receiving a Sleep command. It exits Sleep mode after a Hard Reset or Soft Reset from the host and enters Standby mode.
- Idle and standby timers: These timers reinitialize after any active function (read, write, or seek) and count down. If they reach zero before further drive activity, the drive transitions to standby mode.
ATA Commands:
The drive supports a comprehensive set of ATA standard commands for device configuration, data transfer, power management, and security. These include:

- Download Microcode
- Execute Device Diagnostics

Maintenance Features
Handling and Static-Discharge Precautions:
- Keep the drive in its electrostatic discharge (ESD) bag until installation.
- Use a grounded wrist strap or frequently touch a grounded metal chassis before handling.
- Handle the drive by its edges or frame only.
- Avoid pressing down on the drive top cover.
- Rest the drive on a padded, antistatic surface.
- Do not touch connector pins or the printed circuit board.
- Do not remove factory-installed labels, as removal voids the warranty and labels contain service information and seal out contamination.
Data Loss Prevention:
- To prevent data loss during power interruption with write cache enabled, the host should issue a standby immediate or flush cache command before a controlled power-off operation.
Environmental Protection:
- Seagate designs its products to meet worldwide environmental protection requirements, including regulations restricting certain chemical substances (RoHS, REACH, China RoHS 2, Taiwan RoHS).
Warranty Information:
- Warranty information for a specific drive can be determined by visiting the Seagate support website and providing the drive serial number, model number (or part number), and country of purchase.
Diagnostic Tools:
- SeaTools diagnostic software provides a built-in drive self-test (DST S.M.A.R.T. command for D4h) that eliminates unnecessary drive returns.
