Overview

This document is the owner's manual for a Craftsman 900 Series 14-inch Rear Tine Tiller with Counter Rotating Tines, model number 944.629665. It provides comprehensive information on assembly, operation, maintenance, service, adjustments, and repair parts.

Function Description:

The Craftsman 900 Series Rear Tine Tiller is designed for tilling and cultivating soil. Its primary function is to dig into, turn over, and break up packed soil before planting, as well as to clear unwanted vegetation. The counter-rotating tines are a key feature, designed to provide efficient soil preparation. The tiller can also be used for cultivating, which involves destroying weeds between rows and breaking up the upper layer of soil crust to retain moisture. The depth stake allows for versatile tilling and cultivating depths, or for easier transport. The unit is equipped with an internal combustion engine, and for safety, it should not be used on or near unimproved forest-covered, brush-covered, or grass-covered land unless the engine's exhaust system has a spark arrester.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: 944.629665
  • Tine Width: 14 inches
  • Gasoline Capacity: 3 Quarts (2.8L) of Unleaded Regular gasoline. Gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol (E10) is acceptable; exceeding this will void the product warranty.
  • Oil (API-SG-SL): Capacity of 20 oz. (0.6L). SAE 30 oil is recommended above 32°F/0°C, and SAE 5W30 below 32°F/0°C.
  • Spark Plug: Champion RC12YC with a gap of 0.030 inches (0.76mm).
  • Tire Pressure: 20 PSI (1.4 kg/cm²) for optimal tilling performance.
  • Recommended Tilling Depth: 4 to 6 inches (10-15cm) for best results.
  • Recommended Cultivating Depth: 1 to 3 inches (2.5-7.5 cm).
  • Belt Tension: The extension spring for the ground drive belt should have approximately 5/8 inch stretch when the drive control bar is engaged.

Usage Features:

  • Operator's Position: The manual defines "right" and "left" from the perspective of the operator standing behind the tiller handles.
  • Controls: The tiller features a Drive Control Bar (engages tines), Depth Stake (controls digging depth), Fuel Shut-Off Valve, Throttle Control (engine speed), Choke Control (cold starts), Shift Lever (transmission gears), Shift Lever Indicator (shows current gear), and Recoil Starter Handle (starts engine).
  • Starting: Before starting, the shift lever must be in "N" (neutral), throttle in "FAST," fuel shut-off valve open, and choke set to "CHOKE" for cold starts. The spark plug wire must be properly connected.
  • Stopping: To stop, release the drive control bar, move the shift lever to "N," and move the throttle control to "STOP."
  • Tine Operation: Tine movement is engaged by moving the shift lever to the till position and engaging the drive control bar.
  • Forward/Reverse: The shift lever allows for "F" (forward) and "R" (reverse) positions, which engage the wheels only (tines stopped) for transport or maneuvering.
  • Hard to Shift Gears: Briefly engaging and releasing the drive control bar or rocking the tiller can help shift gears.
  • Turning: To turn, release the drive control bar, move the throttle to "SLOW," place the shift lever in "F," lift the handle to raise tines, and swing the handle in the desired direction.
  • Outer Side Shields: These shields are adjustable to protect small plants during shallow tilling.
  • Transport: For transport, the depth stake can be moved to the top hole, and the shift lever placed in "F." For longer transport, the spark plug wire should be disconnected, and the fuel tank drained.
  • Safety: The manual emphasizes wearing safety glasses, avoiding contact with rotating parts, and never operating the tiller without proper guards.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Schedule: A maintenance schedule is provided, detailing tasks to be performed before each use, every 5 hours, every 25 hours, every 50 hours, and every season.
  • Engine Oil: Check oil level before each use and every 5 hours of continuous use. Change oil every 50 hours or once a year. Use API service classification SG-SL oil.
  • Air Cleaner: Service the air cleaner cartridge every 25 hours, or more often in dusty conditions. Clean by tapping or replace if very dirty. Do not use petroleum solvents or pressurized air.
  • Cooling System: Keep the air screen, cylinder fins, levers, and linkage clean to ensure proper air cooling.
  • Muffler/Spark Arrester: Inspect periodically and replace if damaged. Clean the spark arrester screen every 50 hours if equipped.
  • Spark Plug: Replace at the beginning of each tilling season or every 50 hours.
  • Transmission: Lubricate the right-hand side gear case grease fitting with 1 oz. of EP #1 Grease once a season.
  • Cleaning: Clean the tiller when the engine and transmission are cool. Avoid pressurized water on engine and transmission gasket areas.
  • Tire Care: Maintain 20 PSI tire pressure. Keep tires free of gasoline or oil.
  • Tine Replacement: Check tines for sharpness, wear, and bending. Replace if the gap between tines exceeds 3-1/2 inches. New tines should be assembled with sharpened edges rotating rearward.
  • Ground Drive Belt Adjustment: Adjust belt tension by loosening the cable clip screw and sliding the cable until the extension spring has about 5/8 inch stretch when the drive control bar is engaged.
  • Carburetor Adjustment: The carburetor is factory preset, but minor adjustments may be needed for different conditions. Refer to the engine manual for details. Do not tamper with the engine governor.
  • Storage: Before storing for 30 days or more, clean the tiller, inspect belts, lubricate, check fasteners, touch up paint, drain engine oil, add 1 oz. of oil to the cylinder, and replace the spark plug. For the fuel system, drain the fuel tank and run the engine until the fuel lines and carburetor are empty, or use a fuel stabilizer. Do not store with fuel in the tank indoors.
