Overview

The SCD4x is Sensirion's next-generation miniature CO2 sensor, designed to break size barriers in CO2 sensing with a compact form factor of 10.1 x 10.1 x 6.5 mm³. It utilizes photoacoustic NDIR (Non-Dispersive Infrared) sensing principle, combined with Sensirion's patented PASens® and CMOSens® technology, to deliver high accuracy at an unmatched price point. The sensor is reflow solderable, enabling cost- and space-effective integration into various applications, offering maximal design freedom.

Function Description:

The SCD4x measures CO2 concentration, temperature, and relative humidity. It operates on the photoacoustic NDIR sensing principle, where CO2 molecules absorb infrared light, causing a pressure wave that is detected by an acoustic transducer. This allows for precise CO2 measurement. An integrated SHT4x humidity and temperature sensor provides on-chip signal compensation, which is crucial for accurate CO2 readings as CO2 concentration is influenced by these environmental factors. The device is designed to be a key component in smart ventilation systems, indoor air quality monitors, and other connected devices, helping to maintain optimal CO2 levels for human cognitive performance and well-being.

Usage Features:

  • Periodic Measurement Modes: The SCD4x supports both a default periodic measurement mode with a 5-second signal update interval and a low-power periodic measurement mode with a 30-second signal update interval. The low-power mode is ideal for power-constrained applications, reducing self-heating and power consumption, though with a longer response time.
  • Single Shot Measurement (SCD41 only): For on-demand measurements, the SCD41 offers a single-shot mode, allowing for flexible measurement intervals. This mode consumes typically 243 mJ per single shot.
  • On-Chip Output Signal Compensation: The sensor features built-in compensation for pressure and temperature effects. Users can set a temperature offset and ambient pressure to improve the accuracy of CO2, RH, and T output signals.
  • Field Calibration:
    • Forced Recalibration (FRC): Allows for immediate restoration of highest accuracy using a CO2 reference value. This feature helps compensate for drifts from manufacturing or extensive stresses.
    • Automatic Self-Calibration (ASC): Ensures long-term stability without manual intervention. It assumes the sensor is exposed to 400 ppm CO2 concentration at least once per week.
  • Power Management:
    • Power-down Command: Puts the sensor into a low-power sleep mode, reducing current consumption, suitable for power-cycled single-shot applications.
    • Wake-up Command: Wakes the sensor from sleep mode to idle mode.
  • Advanced Features:
    • persist_settings: Stores configuration settings (temperature offset, sensor altitude, ASC enabled/disabled) in EEPROM, making them persistent across power cycles.
    • get_serial_number: Reads out a unique 48-bit serial number for chip identification and traceability.
    • perform_self_test: An end-of-line test to check sensor functionality and power supply.
    • perform_factory_reset: Resets all configuration settings and erases FRC/ASC history.
    • reinit: Reinitializes the sensor by reloading user settings from EEPROM.
  • I2C Interface: The sensor communicates via a digital I2C interface, supporting standard-mode operation. Data words are 16-bit and are followed by an 8-bit CRC checksum for data integrity.

Maintenance Features:

  • Maintenance-Free Operation: The SCD4x is designed to be maintenance-free when the Automatic Self-Calibration (ASC) field-calibration algorithm is used, assuming regular exposure to 400 ppm CO2.
  • EEPROM Lifetime: The EEPROM is guaranteed to endure at least 2000 write cycles, ensuring reliability for storing persistent settings.
  • Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL3): The sensor is treated according to MSL3 standards. Proper handling and baking procedures are outlined to prevent yield loss and reliability degradation due to moisture exposure during soldering.
  • Soldering Instructions: The sensor is reflow solderable, compatible with IPC/JEDEC J-STD-020 profiles, with a maximum peak temperature of 235°C. Specific care must be taken to avoid exceeding this temperature in any part of the sensor. Board wash processes are not recommended after reflow soldering, and the white protection membrane on top of the sensor must not be removed or wetted.
  • Traceability: Each SCD4x sensor has a distinct electronic serial number, allowing for identification and tracking through production, calibration, and testing processes.
