      Shari RamirezAug 9, 2025
If your SGS Portable Generator has no electrical output, first check that the breaker switch is up. Then, ensure the device you are trying to power is not faulty. Also, verify that the voltage output switch is set to the correct voltage (115 or 230V). Finally, inspect the connecting lead from the appliance or tool into the generator to ensure it is in good condition.

Why won't my SGS SPG6500 Portable Generator start?

If your SGS Portable Generator won't start, make sure the fuel valve tap is in the ‘down’ position and that the oil level is correct. Also, verify that you are using 10W30 oil and that the choke is in the correct position. Finally, check for a spark by removing the HT lead from the spark plug, removing the spark plug, reconnecting the lead, and touching the metal on the spark plug against the generator frame while gently pulling the starter cord. Listen for an audible ‘ticking’ sound and/or small flashes. If there is no audible ‘ticking’ and/or small flashes, the spark plug may need replacing.

    • N
      Nicholas CurtisAug 25, 2025
If your SGS Portable Generator is difficult to start, start by cleaning the air and fuel filters. If the pull start mechanism is too ‘hard’ to pull, check the oil level using the dipstick and drain any excess oil from the oil sump bolt at the bottom of the generator. If the pull start mechanism feels too ‘slack’, please contact SGS Engineering.

If your SGS Portable Generator engine is making revving sounds (or ‘hunting’), it may need a carburettor adjustment. Turn the brass screw on the carburettor clockwise slowly and listen to the engine sound. If it does not improve, try turning the screw anticlockwise.
