After installing the scim packages, you will also need to set the XMODIFIERS environment variable
as follows:
export XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM
export GTK_IM_MODULE=scim
export QT_IM_MODULE=scim
Place the above into /etc/profile or .xinitrc
