The Shorai BMS01 is a Battery Management System (BMS) specifically designed for Shorai LFX Lithium-Iron Batteries. Its primary function is to charge and maintain these batteries, ensuring optimal performance and lifespan. The device offers both "Charge" and "Store" modes, catering to different user needs for battery care.
The BMS01 serves as a dedicated charger and maintainer for Shorai LFX batteries. It connects to a standard AC wall socket (100V~250V, 50/60Hz single-phase) and provides a controlled output to the battery. The system incorporates internal diagnostics to monitor the battery's state and balance its internal cells during charging.
The "Charge Mode" is designed for bringing the battery to a full charge. It operates at a 2A peak rate, actively balancing the LFX cells and performing battery diagnostics. Charging typically completes within 30 minutes to 4 hours, depending on the battery's size and initial state of charge. Once the battery voltage reaches approximately 14.4V, the charging process concludes, indicated by a solid green LED and a series of beeps, after which the unit powers off. For best practice, it's recommended to disconnect the charger from the battery once charging is complete to help maintain a high state of charge.
The "Store Mode" is optimized for long-term maintenance of Shorai LFX batteries, aiming for the best lifespan and performance. In this mode, the BMS01 can remain continuously attached to the LFX battery and wall power. When activated, the BMS01 will either charge or discharge the battery to reach an approximate 80% charged state. It then monitors the battery's capacity, and if it drops to around 60%, it will recharge it back to the 80% level. This range is considered ideal for lithium-iron storage. While LFX batteries can still crank vehicles effectively even below 60% capacity, using the Charge Mode to fully charge the battery after long storage is recommended for optimal performance and extended lifespan.
The BMS01 also features error detection and indication. If an error occurs, both LED indicators will flash together in a specific sequence, and an alarm buzzer may sound until the error is corrected or the device is powered off. These error codes help diagnose issues such as internal input voltage errors, polarity errors, open circuit conditions (e.g., improperly connected or worn cables), or battery/cell voltage errors. For battery/cell voltage errors, using the store mode for 24 hours before attempting to charge again is suggested.
The BMS01 is designed for user-friendly operation. After connecting the AC input cord to the charger and the battery charge cable to the battery's BMS port, the AC plug is inserted into a wall socket. The charger will "beep" a few times upon battery connection, and both the yellow "Store" and green "Charge" LEDs will illuminate solid, indicating it's ready for input. The user then presses either the "Store" or "Charge" button to activate the desired mode. A "triple" beep confirms activation. If no button is pressed within 30 seconds, the charger will power down, requiring a press of the charge button to reactivate.
The device includes a retractable hook, allowing it to be conveniently hung above the floor. This placement ensures easy access to the battery charge cable and helps keep the unit away from potential hazards.
The BMS01 comes with a long and short cable for 12V LFX batteries. The longer cable can be permanently attached to the battery via its 5-pin connector and left on the vehicle, protected from water and damage. This cable can be plugged directly into the BMS01 charger output port if it's long enough. If an extension is needed, the shorter cable in the set can be used. The charger has distinct output ports for LFX 12V and LFX 6V, though cables for 6V LFX batteries are no longer available. Only one output port should be used at a time.
LED indicators provide clear status updates:
The BMS01 is built with several considerations for maintenance and longevity. Users are advised to keep the charge output cable connectors clean and dry. Applying an anti-corrosion electrical grease is recommended in salty, humid, or wet environments to prevent issues. The charge output cables are designed to be replaced after 1200 connect cycles, ensuring reliable connections over time.
Crucially, users are instructed not to remove any QC or Serial# decals from the charger, as these are required for warranty claims. The small 3-pin port to the right of the AC Input is reserved for factory diagnostics and should not be used or modified by the end-user.
General cautions for battery and charger use are also provided to ensure safety and proper function:
For warranty claims, all products sold via Shorai Direct are handled directly and exclusively by Shorai Direct. Users must submit claims online and should not return any product without an RMA#. Simple diagnostics can often resolve issues before a return is necessary. Conditions not covered by warranty include physical damage to the charger, over-voltage or DC input, use with non-Shorai LFX batteries, improper connections to the 5-pin BMS port, or connection/short circuit of the factory data port. In case of shipping damage, it must be reported immediately to the shipper and Shorai Direct, and all original packaging must be retained.
