What can I do in the settings menu of my WL-330 (which settings are there
and what can I change)?
Introduction
The settings menu of your WL-330 allows you to customise the settings of this range extender. If you
have a stable internet connection, we advise you not to change anything here. If you nevertheless
decide to do so, prepare thoroughly:
Please read this entire FAQ carefully so you know which settings you can change.
Make a note of the current settings! Take screenshots, for example. That way you can always
go back to the current situation if something should go wrong. You can also back up the
current settings in a separate file, so you can restore them later if something goes wrong. For
more information about this feature, see the section entitled Tools tab.
If in doubt, always read the entire manual for the WL-330, which is on the accompanying CD-
ROM.
Applying changes in the GUI
The WL-330 will reboot itself after changes are made in the settings menu. After a reboot you must
often reconnect to the WL-330. For more information, see the section entitled Applying changes.
You always log in through a browser.
Home screen of the Settings menu
Once you are logged in, you always start out on the screen shown below (Home). This is the first tab
of the settings menu. You cannot make any changes here. This page provides an overview of the
current settings. Here you can see which network the range extender is connected to and which
channel it is transmitting on.

Do you have a question about the Sitecom WL-330 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Sitecom WL-330 is a 300N Range Extender designed to expand the coverage of your existing wireless network. It functions as a universal repeater, capturing the wireless signal from your router or access point and retransmitting it to cover areas with weak or no signal. This device is primarily intended to improve wireless connectivity within a home or office environment, ensuring a stable internet connection across a wider area.

Function Description

The core function of the WL-330 is to act as a wireless repeater. In this mode, it wirelessly connects to your existing router or modem router and then broadcasts its own wireless signal, effectively extending the reach of the primary network. The device can also be configured as an access point. In this alternative mode, the WL-330 connects to your router or modem router via a network cable, and then broadcasts a wireless signal to receiving devices. This is useful for creating a new wireless network segment or for providing wireless access in an area where a wired connection is available.

The WL-330's settings menu, accessible via a web browser, allows for comprehensive customization of its operation. Upon logging in, users are presented with a "Home" screen that provides an overview of the current settings, including the network it's connected to and the channel it's transmitting on. This screen is for informational purposes only and does not allow for direct changes.

The "Basic Settings" tab is where users manage the fundamental connection parameters between the range extender and the primary network. Here, you can define the ESSID (network name) and Channel for the wireless connection. The "MAIN ESSID" field displays the current network name of your range extender, which can be customized to your preference. This name is what appears in the network center on connected PCs or laptops. The "SSID Root AP" field shows the network to which the range extender is connected; it is generally advised against changing this. The "Channel number" field allows you to set the range extender to operate on a different channel, though it must always match the channel used by the primary router or modem router for a successful connection. The "Mode" setting on this tab allows switching between Universal Repeater and Access Point functionality.

The "View active clients" button initiates a scan to identify devices with a wireless receiver currently connected to the range extender, providing a list of these clients. Similarly, the "Network scan" button generates a list of all wireless networks in the vicinity, enabling users to establish a connection to a network directly from that list.

The "Advanced Settings" tab offers more detailed configuration options. The most critical setting here is "Security," which allows users to manage the security standard of the wireless signal broadcast by the range extender. It is crucial that this security standard matches that of the primary router or access point. Sitecom recommends using the WPA Pre-Shared Key standard, with WPA2(AES) as the preferred WPA Unicast Cipher Suite. The password used to connect to the primary network is displayed under "Pre-Shared Key" and should not be altered, as this would disrupt the connection. Other advanced settings, such as "Complete" and "Radius server," are available but are not detailed in the provided documentation, implying they are for more specialized configurations.

The "Tools" tab provides several utility functions, organized into four sub-tabs: "System," "Back-up," "Upgrade," and "Reset."

Usage Features

The WL-330 is designed for straightforward setup and operation, though it offers extensive customization for advanced users.

  • Initial Setup and Configuration: Accessing the settings menu is done through a web browser. Users are advised to read the entire FAQ and manual before making changes. It's highly recommended to note down current settings or take screenshots before making any modifications, or to back up current settings to a file. This ensures that the device can be reverted to a working state if issues arise.
  • Network Name (ESSID) Customization: Users can personalize the network name broadcast by the range extender, making it easily identifiable.
  • Channel Management: While the channel can be changed, it must always align with the channel of the primary router to maintain a connection.
  • Mode Switching (Repeater/Access Point): The flexibility to operate as either a universal repeater or an access point caters to different network setups and user needs. The access point mode is particularly useful for extending a wired network wirelessly.
  • Client and Network Scanning: The ability to view active clients and scan for nearby wireless networks provides valuable diagnostic and connection management capabilities.
  • Security Configuration: The device supports various security standards, with WPA Pre-Shared Key and WPA2(AES) being recommended for robust protection. Users must ensure the security settings match those of their primary network.
  • Password Protection: The "System" sub-tab under "Tools" allows users to set a password for accessing the settings menu, enhancing security. The default username is "admin" and cannot be changed.
  • DHCP Server Management: The WL-330 includes a DHCP server, but it is strongly recommended to keep it disabled. This is because most routers already have an active DHCP server, and having multiple active DHCP servers on the same network can lead to connectivity issues.
  • Applying Changes: After making any changes in the settings menu, the WL-330 will typically reboot. Users may need to reconnect their PC or laptop to the range extender after a reboot, especially if network names have been altered. The interface provides options to "Continue" configuring other settings or "Apply" to implement the changes and restart the system.

Maintenance Features

The WL-330 incorporates several features to facilitate maintenance and ensure long-term usability.

  • Backup and Restore Settings: The "Back-up" sub-tab under "Tools" is a critical maintenance feature. It allows users to save the current configuration to a file (named "config.bin"). This backup file can then be used to restore the settings later, which is invaluable before making significant changes or in case of configuration errors. This feature ensures that users can always revert to a known working configuration.
  • Firmware Upgrade: The "Upgrade" sub-tab enables users to install new firmware. Firmware updates often bring performance improvements, bug fixes, and enhanced security features. Users can download the latest firmware from www.sitecom.com, connect the WL-330 via a network cable, and then upload the firmware file. It is crucial not to disconnect the cable during the upgrade process to prevent damage to the device.
  • Factory Reset: The "Reset" sub-tab under "Tools" allows users to revert the WL-330 to its original factory settings. This is a drastic measure that erases all custom configurations and should only be used when necessary, for example, to troubleshoot persistent issues or to prepare the device for a new setup. The device can also be reset by pressing and holding a physical reset button on the unit itself for 15-20 seconds. After a factory reset, the WL-330 must be reinstalled and reconfigured to connect to the network.
  • Documentation and Support: The manual emphasizes the importance of reading the complete documentation (available on the accompanying CD-ROM) for the WL-330, especially when in doubt about advanced settings. This proactive approach to information access is a key aspect of device maintenance, empowering users to resolve issues and optimize performance.

In summary, the Sitecom WL-330 is a versatile range extender designed to enhance wireless network coverage. Its user-friendly interface, coupled with robust configuration and maintenance features, makes it a practical solution for improving wireless connectivity in various environments.
