The Sixfab Jumpstart 5G is an IoT computer based on the Raspberry Pi 4, designed to provide high-speed 5G connectivity for various IoT applications. It integrates a Quectel RM502Q-AE modem, a 5G NR Sub-6GHz variant, and features a patent-pending Sixfab-designed internal antenna for optimal performance at Sub-6 frequency bands. The device is housed in a custom plastic enclosure with a specially designed thermal system to ensure optimal performance.

Usage Features:

Getting Started:

  • Pre-configured OS: The device comes with a pre-configured Raspberry Pi OS, eliminating the need for manual OS installation.
  • Driver Support: The cellular module has built-in support in the Linux kernel and is automatically recognized; no additional drivers are required.
  • Communication Tools: atcom and minicom are pre-installed for sending AT commands to the cellular module.

Establishing a 5G Connection:

  1. Unplug USB 3.0 Bridge Connector.
  2. Remove Top Cover: Push to remove the top cover.
  3. Insert SIM Card: Plug in a nano-type SIM Card (4FF), paying attention to corner marking.
  4. Assemble Top Cover: Align the bottom edge first when reassembling.
  5. Connect USB 3.0 Bridge Connector.
  6. Power Up: Plug in a micro HDMI and keyboard/mouse to access the desktop GUI, then connect two power adapters to the Type-C connectors.
  7. Set APN: Use the atcom AT+CGDCONT=1,"IPV4V6","YOUR_APN" command in the terminal to set the Access Point Name (APN).
  8. Reset Modem: Use atcom AT+CFUN=1,1 to reset the modem. Wait 50 seconds for modem function and a few minutes for network registration.
  9. Test Connection: Verify internet activity using ifconfig or ipaddr for the usbX interface and test connectivity with ping -I usb0 sixfab.com -c 5.

SSH Login:

  • Credentials: Username: pi, Password: raspberry. Users are advised to change these default credentials for security.

Hardware Features:

  • LED Indicators:
    • Power LED: Indicates HAT power status, controllable via GPIO19.
    • Status LED: Indicates RF function of the module (on when RF function is on, off when SIM is not powered or RF function is disabled).
    • User LED: Programmable user-LED, controllable from GPIO21 of Raspberry Pi for debugging or custom functions.
  • User Button: Programmable button connected to GPIO20, reads HIGH by default.

Software Features:

  • Network Configuration: AT commands allow disabling 5G NR (SA/NSA), configuring network search modes (AT+QNWPREFCFG), and defining PDP contexts (AT+CGDCONT).
  • Network Diagnostics: AT commands like AT+QENG (Query Primary Serving Cell and Neighbour Cell Information) and AT+QNWINFO (Query Network Information) provide detailed network status, including cell ID, signal strength (RSRP, RSRQ, SINR), band, and bandwidth. AT+C5GREG queries 5GS Network Registration Status. AT+COPS allows operator selection.

Warnings:

  • Power Supply: Use only official Raspberry Pi power supplies or Sixfab power adapters to protect electronics and ensure optimal performance.
  • Overheating: Do not block device airflow. The cooling fan automatically adjusts speed; reprogramming may be needed if the OS image or script is overwritten.
  • ESD Protection: The device contains sensitive electronic circuitry (ESD). Handle with proper ESD protection to prevent damage.
  • Antenna Placement: The antenna is located at the top; avoid placing the device upside down or near objects that could affect the signal.
  • SIM Card Removal: Use the included Sixfab Jumpstart 5G SIM removal tool to eject the SIM card to prevent slot damage.
