Overview

The Lincoln Model 1134 is a pistol grip grease gun designed for lubrication tasks, offering both high pressure and volume capabilities. It is suitable for use with either lubricant cartridges or bulk grease, and features a flexible high-pressure hose for accessing hard-to-reach grease points.

Function Description

The primary function of the Model 1134 is to dispense grease under pressure for lubricating various mechanical components. It operates by manually pumping a handle, which drives a piston to force grease through an extension and coupler to the lubrication point. The "variable stroke" feature allows users to achieve higher greasing pressures with short piston strokes or high volume with a full stroke, offering versatility for different lubrication needs.

The grease gun can be filled in several ways:

  • Lubricant Cartridge Installation: This involves removing the head and plunger assembly, extracting any empty cartridge, and then inserting a new cartridge (with caps removed) into the container tube. The head and plunger assembly are then reassembled, and the plunger rod is engaged to prime the gun.
  • Filling from Bulk Container: For bulk grease, the head and plunger assembly are removed, and lubricant is packed into the head cavity and the container tube. The T-handle is slowly pulled back while pushing the container tube deeper into the lubricant to prevent air pockets. The plunger rod is then latched, and the head and plunger assembly are loosely assembled to the filled container tube. The plunger rod is disengaged and pushed into the container, and the container tube is tightened until lubricant oozes, indicating proper assembly and priming.
  • Filling with a Filler Pump: When using a filler pump, the plunger rod is engaged, and the gun's filler nipple is inserted into the pump socket. The T-handle is extended, and the filler pump is operated until the container is filled (indicated by the plunger rod extending approximately 8 inches). The plunger rod is then disengaged and pushed into the container.

The gun also includes a filler/bleeder valve in the head, which allows for clean filling from grease pails when used with a Lincoln grease gun filler pump. This valve can also be used to expel air pockets if the grease is thick, cold, or if an air-lock occurs.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Bulk Capacity: 16 oz. (473 cm³)
  • Cartridge Capacity: 14 1/2 oz. (429 cm³)
  • Maximum Pressure: Up to 7,500 psi (517.2 Bar)

Usage Features

  • Pistol Grip Design: Provides comfortable and ergonomic handling for extended use.
  • Flexible High-Pressure Hose: Enhances accessibility to lubrication points that are difficult to reach with rigid extensions.
  • Variable Stroke: Allows users to choose between high pressure (short piston strokes) and high volume (full stroke) depending on the lubrication requirement.
  • Multiple Filling Options: Supports lubricant cartridges, bulk grease from containers, and filling via a filler pump, offering flexibility in lubricant supply.
  • Filler/Bleeder Valve: Facilitates clean filling from grease pails and aids in expelling air pockets for consistent performance.
  • Plunger Rod Latch: The T-handle plunger rod can be latched into a keyhole slot in the container cap, securing it during cartridge installation or when preparing for bulk filling.

Maintenance Features

  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a comprehensive troubleshooting section to address common issues such as the gun pumping little or no grease or grease leaking past the plunger. This guide helps users diagnose problems like air locks, thick/cold grease, damaged check valve components, worn O-rings, or damaged plungers.
  • Service Parts List: A detailed list of service parts is provided, including part numbers for components like the handle with piston kit, outlet kit, rubber washer, container assembly, bulk fill kit, high-pressure hose, coupler assembly, and rigid extension assembly. This allows for easy identification and ordering of replacement parts.
  • Component Diagram: An exploded view diagram of the grease gun illustrates all internal and external components, aiding in disassembly, reassembly, and part identification for maintenance and repair.
  • Air Pocket Expulsion: The filler/bleeder valve and specific procedures for pushing the plunger rod are outlined to effectively expel air pockets, which can cause the gun to lose its prime, ensuring consistent operation.
  • Safety Precautions: Warnings are provided regarding the high pressure the gun can develop (up to 7,500 psi), emphasizing the importance of using safety glasses and gloves, and keeping hands clear of the extension during operation. It also warns against using non-approved hoses.
