Overview

This document describes the ŠkodaAuto Radio Navigation System Amundsen, a sophisticated in-car infotainment unit designed to provide navigation, radio, and media functionalities. The system is integrated into Škoda vehicles, offering a user-friendly interface and a range of features to enhance the driving experience.

General Information and Equipment Overview

The Amundsen system is controlled via a combination of physical buttons, a touch-screen display, and a menu control button.

  • Control Button (1): This rotary/push knob serves multiple purposes. A brief press switches the unit on or off, while turning it adjusts the volume of the currently playing audio source.
  • Range Selector Keys (2): These keys allow the user to select different operating modes or menus:
    • RADIO: Switches to radio mode and changes the frequency range.
    • MEDIA: Switches to the last played media source or allows selection of a new one.
    • PHONE: Mutes the audio.
    • NAV: Activates the navigation system.
    • TRAFFIC: Displays stored TMC (Traffic Message Channels) traffic reports.
    • SETUP: Enables configuration of various system settings.
  • Backwards/Forwards Keys (3): These keys control the "active" audio source. In radio mode, they select stations from a list or memory. In media mode, a brief press selects the previous or next track, while a long press enables fast forward or reverse. In navigation mode, they repeat the last navigation message (if active), display vehicle position information, and enable additional functions like flagging destinations, viewing route lists, or excluding a stretch of road.
  • CD Case (4): This is where CDs are inserted.
  • Touch Screen (5): The primary interface for interaction. Fields highlighted in color on the screen are "active" and can be operated by touching them.
  • Eject Key (6): A brief press moves an inserted CD into a position ready for removal.
  • Information Key (7): This key provides additional information depending on the current operating mode. In radio mode, it toggles radio text display. In media mode, it repeats the last navigation message or calls up additional functions.
  • Return Button (8): Returns to the previously selected menu.
  • AUX Socket (9): Allows connection of an external audio source.
  • Menu Control Button (10): Used to mark a function or sub-menu, set a value (by turning), or select/confirm a function or sub-menu (by pressing).
  • Function Buttons (11): The function of these buttons is displayed on the screen itself.
  • Memory Card Case (12): Located next to the screen, this slot supports SD (Secure Digital) and MMC (Multimedia Cards) with capacities up to 4 GB, and SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) cards up to 32 GB.

Operation When Driving

The system emphasizes driver concentration on the road. It is crucial to operate the navigation system only when traffic conditions allow. Audible signals from outside the vehicle, such as emergency vehicle sirens, must always be audible. The system may restrict certain functions at specific speeds in accordance with legal requirements.

Switching the System On and Off

The system is switched on or off by pressing or turning the control button (1). It will resume the last active audio source. If the ignition is switched off, the system automatically turns off after approximately half an hour to protect the vehicle battery. This process can be repeated as needed.

General Operation - Touch Screen and Input

The touch screen displays "function buttons" (D/F) which are active fields that call up functions or menus. The main menu typically shows the selected radio station (frequency or designation) (A), the selected waveband (B), and indicates activation for traffic reports (C) and the current menu (E).

Pop-up Windows and Check Boxes: Pressing a function key may open a "pop-up window" with various set-up options. A brief press on the desired option closes the pop-up. Some functions are controlled by "check boxes" – a tick (☑) indicates the function is on, an empty box (☐) indicates it's off.

Input Masks for Free Text: For entering destinations or searching for points of interest, an input mask appears (Fig. 2).

  • Characters are entered by touching the on-screen keypad.
  • OK: Accepts the entered character sequence.
  • Delete: Deletes characters from right to left.
  • ↑: Toggles between upper and lower case.
  • 09: Opens a keypad for digits and special characters, then changes to A-Z to return to letters.
  • Space Key: Enters spaces.
  • ☑ or ☑: Moves the character entry cursor left or right.
  • ÄÜ: Opens a pop-up window for special characters.
  • Some letters with a small triangle "V" indicate that specific characters based on that letter can be selected by pressing and holding the key.

Input Mask for Selecting Destination Address: When entering a destination, only characters corresponding to stored destinations can be entered (Fig. 3).

  • Limiting and Selecting from List: Pressing List/OK during entry displays a list of selectable destinations that match the entered sequence. If fewer than 99 destinations match, the number is displayed. If fewer than six destinations match, the entry window closes, and the list is shown automatically.

Important Information and Maintenance

  • Warranty: The equipment warranty terms and conditions apply to new vehicles.
  • Anti-theft Protection: The system has anti-theft coding. After a power interruption (e.g., battery disconnection, fuse failure), a four-digit code must be entered to unlock the unit. The code number can be obtained "online" via a Škoda Service Partner. The system is normally automatically decoded (convenience coding) as the code is stored in the instrument cluster.
  • Incorrect Code: If an incorrect code is entered three times, the unit will be blocked for approximately one hour. This cycle repeats for subsequent invalid attempts.
  • Screen Care: The screen should be treated with care to prevent dents and scratches. Clean it with a soft cloth and pure alcohol to remove finger marks. Do not use solvents like turpentine or petrol, as they will damage the screen surface.
  • CD Handling: Inserting a second CD while one is being ejected can damage the CD drive. Always wait for the CD to be fully ejected before inserting a new one. Dirty or scratched navigation CDs can significantly impair system speed and functions.
  • Button Operation: Press buttons and keys gently; sufficient pressure is light. Rotary/push knobs have predetermined breaking points to reduce injury risk.
  • Touch Screen Operation: Use slight finger pressure. Do not use pointed or sharp-edged objects. If a display cannot be called up by pressing a button, it means it's not available at that time.

Special Functions

  • Parking Aid*: If the vehicle is equipped with a parking aid, the distance to obstacles is shown on the screen when activated.
  • Climatronic*: If the vehicle has Climatronic, feedback on setting changes is displayed on the screen.

This comprehensive system is designed to provide a safe, convenient, and enjoyable driving experience, with a strong emphasis on user safety and proper operation.
