Safety Instructions
All Operators Must Read These
Instructions Before Use
Any electrical appliance can be dangerous if used incorrectly.
Some of the safety precautions given in this manual apply
generally to many appliances. Other warnings are specic
to the use of this snow thrower. Keep this manual for future
reference.
General Safety WARNINGS!
You and any other operator of this snow thrower must read,
understand, and follow these instructions in their entirety, and
should reread them at the start of each snow season. Failure
to follow these instructions may result in ELECTRIC SHOCK,
FIRE, and/or serious PERSONAL INJURY.
Notice the personal safety alert symbol
m used in this
manual to draw your attention to a WARNING given along
with the particular operating instruction. This means that
the operation requires special ATTENTION, CAUTION, and
AWARENESS.
1. Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered, dark areas
invite accidents.
2. Do not operate the snow thrower in an explosive
atmosphere, such as in the presence of ammable
liquids, gases, or dust. Electrical appliances create sparks
that may ignite the dust or fumes.
3. Keep children, pets, and bystanders away from the
work area. Be aware that the normal noise of the
machine when turned on may make it dicult for you to
hear approaching people. Spectators should wear safety
glasses and be kept a safe distance away from the work
area. Do not let spectators touch the snow thrower or the
extension cord.
4. Electrical plugs must match the outlet. Never modify
the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with
grounded appliances. Unmodied plugs and matching
outlets will reduce the risk of electric shock.
5. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces
(i.e. upper and lower water pipes, radiators, ranges,
refrigerators, microwave ovens, and outer frames of
heating equipment). Take necessary precautions to avoid
electric shock. There is an increased risk of electric shock
if your body is earthed or grounded.
6. Do not abuse the cord. Keep the cord away from heat,
oil, sharp edges, or moving parts. Never carry the snow
thrower by its cord or yank the cord to disconnect it from
the electrical outlet. Damaged or entangled cords increase
the risk of electric shock.
7. Replace or properly repair damaged cords. If the cord
becomes damaged in any manner while plugged into the
wall receptacle, immediately pull the extension cord plug
from the receptacle.
8. Contact with water while operating the snow thrower
can result in electric shock and serious bodily injury.
Do not use the snow thrower in damp or wet locations or
expose to rain. Do not handle the plug or the appliance
with wet hands or while standing in water.
9.
mWARNING – Use outdoor extension cords marked
SW-A, SOW-A, STW-A, STOW-A, SJW-A, SJTW-A, or
SJTOWA. These cords are rated for outdoor use and
reduce the risk of electric shock.
10.Turnothepowerswitchanddisconnectthepower
cable before making any adjustments to the unit and
before inspecting, servicing, changing accessories, or
cleaning the snow thrower. Follow the same procedure
if any other dangerous conditions are present during
operation. Any adjustments to the unit should be
performed after revolving parts inside the snow thrower
stop completely. Such preventative safety measures
reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
11.Ifyoundthemainpowercableortheextensioncable
damaged, please pull out the plug from the socket and
disconnect the power immediately. Repair the cable or
replace it if necessary.
12. When replacing any parts, you must strictly observe
the instructions and procedures described in this
operator's manual. Special care should be paid to any
rubber parts, since these parts may increase the engine
load and decrease its mechanical power if damaged.
13. Do not move or transport the snow thrower when the
plug is connected to the power socket and the switch
is turned on.
14. If, during use, you notice that the unit runs unstably
or hear abnormal sounds from the engine, stop the
machine, disconnect the power immediately and
contact an authorized Snow Joe

Overview

This document describes the Snow Joe® Model SJ617E Electric Snow Thrower, an 18-inch, 12-amp walk-behind snow thrower designed for residential and personal household use.

Function Description:

The Snow Joe® SJ617E is an electric-powered snow thrower designed to clear snow from paved surfaces. It utilizes a 2-blade, temperature-resistant durable plastic auger to collect and discharge snow. The unit offers directional control for snow discharge, allowing users to adjust the throw direction and height. It is intended for use in various snow conditions, including dry or wet snow.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Rated Voltage: 120 V ~ 60 Hz
  • Power: 12 A
  • No Load Speed: 2000 ± 10% rpm
  • Rotor: 2-blade, temperature-resistant durable plastic auger
  • Tire Size: 6.3 in. (16 cm)
  • Type of Snow: Dry or wet snow
  • Clearing Width: 18 in. (46 cm)
  • Depth of Snow Cut: 8 in. (20 cm)
  • Throw Distance (Max): 20 ft (6 m)
  • Plowing Capacity (Max): 550 lbs/min (250 kg/min)
  • Directional Control: 180° adjustable chute
  • Weight: 25.9 lbs (11.75 kg)

Usage Features:

The snow thrower is designed for user safety and ease of operation.

  • Safety Switch Button and ON/OFF Lever: To power on, the safety switch button must be depressed and held while pulling the ON/OFF switch lever. Releasing the lever powers off the unit. This two-step process prevents accidental starting.
  • Extension Cord Restraint Hook: An on-board cord restraint hook is provided to prevent the appliance cord from disconnecting from the extension cord during operation. Users can also tie a knot with the two cords for added security.
  • Polarized Plug: The appliance features a polarized plug, requiring a polarized UL-, CSA-, or ETL-rated extension cord for outdoor, all-weather use to reduce the risk of electric shock.
  • Adjustable Discharge Chute: The discharge chute can be rotated 180 degrees using a chute crank, allowing users to direct snow to the left or right.
  • Adjustable Chute Deflector: The chute deflector on top of the discharge chute controls the height of the snow stream. Knobs allow users to raise or lower the deflector to achieve the desired throw height.
  • Maneuverability: The unit can be moved by using the wheels on one side as a pivot point, allowing it to be slightly tilted forward or backward for easier movement.
  • Clearing Patterns: The manual provides guidance on effective snow clearing patterns for larger areas, such as driveways, to avoid throwing snow into unwanted places and eliminate the need for secondary removal.
  • Scraper Bar: The scraper bar at the base of the unit helps to clear snow effectively and can be adjusted for use on unpaved surfaces by pushing down on the handle to raise it above pebbles or gravel.
  • Outdoor Use Only: The snow thrower is intended for use with outdoor extension cords marked SW-A, SOW-A, STW-A, STOW-A, SJW-A, SJTW-A, or SJTOWA.
  • GFCI Protection: Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection is recommended for the circuits or outlets used with the snow thrower to enhance safety.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the snow thrower's safety and longevity.

  • Pre-Operation Inspection: Before each use, operators should thoroughly inspect the unit, ensuring all parts are secure and installed correctly. Any abnormalities or damage should be repaired before operation.
  • Post-Operation Cleaning: After each snow removal session, the unit should be run for a few minutes to prevent the collector/impeller from freezing. The motor should then be shut off, and all revolving parts allowed to stop completely. Residual ice and snow should be wiped off, and the chute crank rotated several times to remove excess snow.
  • Cleaning: The snow thrower should be cleaned with a cloth soaked in hot water and a soft brush. Detergents or solvents should not be used as they can damage plastic parts.
  • Lubrication: The motor and auger are lubricated for lifetime use at the factory, and no additional lubrication is necessary.
  • Bolt and Screw Checks: Bolts and screws should be checked frequently for proper tightness to ensure safe working condition.
  • Part Replacement: Worn or damaged parts must be replaced with original replacement parts designed specifically for the model. The manual provides instructions for replacing the plastic auger, scraper bar, and belt.
  • Belt Replacement: Instructions are provided for replacing the drive belt, which may be necessary if the auger jams or malfunctions, or if heavy wet snow puts a load on the belts, requiring more frequent replacement.
  • Storage: Before storing, the engine should be allowed to cool, the extension cord disconnected and inspected, and the unit stored in a locked, dry place out of reach of children. Metal parts can be lightly oiled to prevent corrosion during long storage periods.
  • Service and Support: In case of unstable operation, abnormal engine sounds, or any other issues, users are advised to stop the machine, disconnect power, and contact an authorized Snow Joe® + Sun Joe® service center. Model and serial numbers, located on the main cover, are required for service and parts reordering.
